I worked at Spam for 33 years, but never got beyond putting pig bits in grinder section. One day Gerald had a stroke and I took over adding salt for the afternoon though. That was quite advanced, but nothing to do with the fancy ring-pull.

@no1fibersplicer525 2 года назад
Gerald was my father, he had saved his spot at spam for me when he died. Then they informed me they had given the job to one of the young guys who had worked in the pig bits dept. I had all forgotten about this painful time in my life. Thank you

The JLC skeleton minute repeater you showed a couple of years ago was very loud, very clear, and nicely sonorous - and a fraction of the cost of this Patek. Oddly, it used the crystal as a "speaker" which is where the Patek got the idea?!
@thethirdman225
@thethirdman225 2 года назад
You’re probably right. JLC have been described as “the watchmaker’s watchmaker” so it wouldn’t surprise me at all if that was the case. They have also made stuff for Patek in the past.

Love this format as much as the original. You guys working together, for one, have nudged several discussions toward the extremes of what most people regard as 'affordable.' Items between $200 - $1,500. Which offers appreciation of a watch’s qualities that might be overlook in lieu of being thought of as merely cheap. Regarding the "key-less Spam container", the ring pull was invented by Ermal Fraze, in 1963, in Dayton, Ohio. The idea for the ring pull came about while Ermal Cleon Fraze was having a picnic and couldn’t open his beer can after forgetting his can opener. I believe that all subsequent ring pull opening containers were inspired by the design of Mr. Emal Fraze. Fred

Hey chaps, didn't it occur to you that the design of the dial works for exactly what Patek wanted to accomplish - waveguidingf and amplification. Here is a quick and dirty on it: the membrane oscillates, creating sound waves. Those waves travel backward (towards the backside of the case) and forward (towards the dial). Then, it probably has been designed, so the wave, reflected from the bottom, interfere with the wave traveling towards the dial to amplify the sound, which then "exits" through the mesh dial for you, and others around you, to enjoy. Sounds plausible?

Just a quibble: the diaphragm does not "amplify" the sound, it only resonates. Meaning that it doesn't add additional energy to system, but it does sort of spread the sound waves out over a larger area. For their next watch, I'd like to see the back diaphragm actually driven by the mainspring. :)

I looked around, and wasn't sure where to actually post a question for the talking hands...er, microphones...so I will throw it out here, and see what happens. Q: most worthless complication? A guy I work with brought his late fathers Omega Seamaster to show me. Beautiful vintage piece! He got so excited that he decided to buy a new watch off a Grey Market site. Spent a lot of $ on a watch I hadn't heard of...thats a chronograph. Got me thinking: why would he, or I, ever want, let alone use, a chronograph? Then I wondered, "what's the most unused complication in watchdom??" Any thoughts? ...I it just to say you have it?

Gentlemen, love your shows, sound of voice, knowledge. Listening to you is pure pleasure. I have just one remark though, maybe you can take it under consideration. Whenn pronouncing “Patek Philippe” you should change your accent slightly. Since Antoni Patek, founder of the company, was Polish, you should put stress on the FIRST syllabus of the word, while Philippe, who was French is accented correctly. So it is not pa-TEK phi-LIPPE, but PA-tek phi-LIPPE. Mr Stern pronounces it correctly ;). Great job guys anyway.
