Full restoration of a 1970 Pontiac GTO Judge Convertible from the 2005 season of Dream Car Garage.
Peter Klutt at Legendary Motorcar restores a GTO Judge Convertible that arrived in pieces after a bodyshop horror story.
Learn about the advantages of Chemical Stripping vs. Sandblasting, how to fix gaps with metalwork, how to fix cracks in Pontiac rubber bumpers, Pontiac GTO gear ratios & more.
The Pontiac GTO is widely regarded as one of the first muscle cars but, by 1970, even one of the stalwarts of the segment wasn’t able to sell as it once did. Still, The GTO of 1970 remains a cornerstone example of muscle cars at their absolute peak.
The Pontiac GTO was born as a sportier version of the Tempest, aimed at a younger clientele. The car debuted in 1964 and by-passed in the process GM’s policy that was limiting A-body intermediate models to a maximum engine capacity of 5.4-liters. As such, the original Tempest GTO came with the 6.4-liter V-8 that was also used by the larger Bonneville and Catalina models.
By 1970, the GTO had lost most of its chromed trim, instead sporting an Endura polyurethane nose and aggressively flared fenders. Of the 40,149, GTOs built in 1970, only 3,797 were ordered with the Judge trim level that had been introduced the year before. Sales kept plummeting from then on thanks to ever-increasing insurance costs, stringent pollution-related rules, and regulations and a general shift in the market’s interest from performance cars to economy cars just as the oil crisis hit.

This is the stuff that got me hooked on what was then Discovery Theater and then Velocity. Since they switched to Motor Trend the only show I still watch is Chasing Classic Cars. I used to watch that network literally all the time thanks to shows like this. Thus is from 2005. Just wondering if Peters son is now in position to take over the business - he was learning well from Pops back then.

When one reaches a level of restoration such as this, you no longer have a ‘vehicle’, you have a form of ‘art’. Call them “trailer queens” or anything else, they’re not meant to be driven. Take them to shows as a testimony to the beauty of the automobile as an expression of man’s artistic talent.

2:30 Some of the parts probably went on Ebay to be sold as the car sat with no one watching.

love how deep you go into the enduro bumper work- if you were to do the same job today, anything you would change based on product tech improvements available now? Always enjoyed this show and the way Peter explained things- basic, detailed, not the least condescending, and truthful. Looking forward to the newer stuff!

Why did you choose to gas weld the quarter, instead of tig?

Can't believe a body shop would strip that car & let it sit in the corner.Kind of a rookie mistake on a big $$ build.

40 mins 20 ish seconds. it shows some of the black int. then it goes down the outside of the bucket. what do you see? Those are not 70 buckets, they have the side latches as the 67 and 68s had. strange the owner would go to so much trouble in detailing the car, then using different year seats. did anyone else catch this?

Typically when you disassemble the cars you can tell the orientation from which a part was hung. All of the raw front metal was flow coated with air curtains with the excess being recycled from the troughs below. FWIW for Corvettes in NCRS judging if you do not get the metallic content/ size as well as color correct and make the surface and application appear like original lacquer with the correct texture you are going to lose A LOT of points.

I hope you guys did not pay a ton for this 'incomplete' but very desirable (and legendary)muscle car. It was just a pile of junk parts until the real restoration work is done to make it uniquely what it was meant for.
