This 1971 Cutlass Supreme Convertible is When Oldsmobile Got It Exactly Right

1971 was a very good year for the Cutlass Convertible - Oldsmobile sold twice as many as they did in 1970, and it outsold the combined number of Buick Skylarks, Chevrolet Malibu, and Pontiac LeMans Convertibles - cars with a lower sticker price that rode the same platform.
Why? I think it's because Olds got the formula exactly right, with beautiful styling, and excellent choice of engines, and very effective marketing. The Cutlass was the perfect car for people who wanted to feel a bit upper crust, but didn't want to get the neighbors talking. It had quality from stem to stern, looked terrific going down the road, and had a lovely driving quality. This led to sales, and plenty of them.
Full review and test drive of a 1971 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme Convertible. Vehicle is available at Autohaus of Naples, on the web at www.AutohausNaples.com, or by phone at (239) 263-8500.

...yeah lol it would be pretty cool to hang with Bill, he's very up to speed on American cars. The closest i got to knowing about American cars in my youth was buying an import copy of Road and Track in July 1986 and seeing cars on shows like Hunter. I'm more a Brock/HSV guy myself being from that country. His car and general cultural knowledge off the top of his head is intrinsic-like.

Finally someone who gets it. 71 is the best looking year. In 1994 I purchased my first car 71 Cutlass Supreme convertible. Dark Green with Light green interior. I was just a young kid and I had to sell it. Then in 2009 I purchased another one exaclty the same. But the second one had to go because of buying a house and our second child coming soon. Now I drive a 21 Bronco to fit my 3 kids it is nice but it will never beat the feeling of driving my 71 cutlass!!

Your criticism of Dalton is hilarious. And I love that you show a picture of him while your doing it. He must be aware that you do this… yet he continues to slack on the detailing. He must not care.
@daultontransport4703
@daultontransport4703 2 года назад
If someone was working for me and they done a shitty ass job like he has, he’d be fired. Having someone who NEEDS money to pay bills goes a long way, especially if it’s someone who gives a fuck about the type of job they’re doing. Dalton clearly shows he doesn’t pay any attention to detail, and don’t anyone give me an excuse that he’s only one person doing it all, while Bill does nothing; we don’t know that, nor do I give a fuck to care, but that’s neither here nor there. If Dalton wants to literally show how much he cares about his job, then he needs to kick rocks and file unemployment or welfare like everyone else. Either be apart of a solution, or be apart of the problem, either way, he’s becoming a problem right now. Can’t stand someone who wants to be lazy and take advantage of someone just because they’re, ‘a decent person’. 😒

My dad worked for John Brown Olds from 1971-1977 and he was allowed as part of his pay to use vehicles on the lot. So, we experienced lots of those cars. The Cutless 442 he brought home one week the drivers seat turned 90 degrees to let you out and in if you wanted to swing it that way. Also he drove home 4 door Cutless and we owned a 1972 Delta 88 4 door. Blue with a dark blue roof. It also had the rocket 350 and we did flip the air cleaner cover to hear the secondaries open. So much fun thanks Bill for the trip down memory lane. Love love love the content and videos! Budlight

I sold my '71 Cutlass Supreme 350 4bbl last week, what a car it was. Sienna paint/Sienna interior/Tan vinyl top. Extremely relaxing ride, yet peppy enough to be fun. Just an all around sweet package. And it was 99% original (one paint job and aftermarket radio), down to the vacuum hoses and spark plug wires. Off course it started leaking all over the place after driving it for a bit, but since everything was 50 years old, that was to expect.

My Dad ordered one of these for my Mom from Gage Oldsmobile in Detroit in the fall of 1970...exact same car, exact same color. His brother, my Uncle, was service manager at Gage. Unfortunately, my Mom passed in April 1971. My Dad then let me take it to college at Emory University. So many great memories...drugs, sex and rock and roll! Had it restored to original condition in 1985 and happily cruised the streets of Kansas City...till a house fire claimed it 1987. It was the only car in the garage, our 2 Audi's were in the driveway and survived. I wish I'd lost the Audi's. Miss that ride! We also had a 1968 4-4-2 which was an incredible muscle car My Dad was a cool dude!

I know this vid is a year old, but....I had a 71 Cutlass Supreme SX Convertible back in the early-mid 90's. What a fantastic car it was! It had the 455 4V, T400 tranny.....SIGH....transmission....and was silver with black Rallye stripes on the hood and decklid, had a black vinyl interior with bucket seats with console and floor shifter, and a black convertible top. Also had the rear bumper that was 442-stlye, with the cutouts for the dual exhaust, and the chrome trumpet exhaust tips. Man, she was something! That 455 had GOBS of torque. I don't know what the rearend ratio was, but it was most likely a 3.08 or something like that, and a one-legger. She had the Olds Rallye wheels, BFG T/A Radials, and even had A/C! She was an original California car, and still in Cali at the time, so there was ZERO rust anywhere. The trunk inside was a s clean as could be, right down to the original trunk mat and spare tire/jack. Man, what a sweet ride. Thanks, Bill, for the trip down memory lane. I had the time of my life in the late 80's through the late 90's. It was definitely a PARTY back then! Take care, man.

Great review! My father had a garage full of Oldsmobile cars, from the Cutlass, to the Vista Cruiser you love so much. By the time I was twelve years old (1976), I had already had my hardship drivers license, and was cruising Westheimer Rd., which was the main drag in Houston, listening to a JBL stereo and equalizer through a ton of speakers and amplifiers I had installed all around the car without cutting holes in any of the panels. My secret was that I had two big home stereo speaker towers in the trunk, hooked up to their own dedicated amplifier. It was always a hit and a ton of fun at parking lot gatherings. They don’t make cars like that anymore, and no one cruises like we used to, thanks to anti-cruising laws. It was fun while it lasted, but it didn’t last long enough, in my opinion. Just like the cars. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

Bill, I’m only two years younger then you and my first car when I was 16 was a 1972 Cutlass S! Jealous? Lol Thanks for the memories. Mine was a coupe with bench seat and vinyl top. Just some things I remember. The noisy speedometer. I believe the only speaker in the front was in the middle of the top of the dash. The radio antenna was embedded in the windshield. I only had a 2 barrel carb, so not sure if 4 was optional or discontinued for 72. 72 was very much a carryover. You set your mirrors once and done. The most annoying thing was the windshield wipers. Off, low, high. So you had to constantly do your own intermittent! Oh, and I was one of those punk kids with the Cherry Bomb and no tailpipe setting off car alarms, lol. Even got a ticket for it! And I can agree this is one of the most wonderful riding cars I have ever Been in. Really the best!

Love your nature and weather reports the most, and the rundown of these great cars! Well, they really weren't great cars, but it was a great era of stuff that was different and not all bean shapes or Stupid Useless Vehicles!

My first car was a 72’. Same car but white interior and white top. The 72 had fake hood louvers. They built a wonderfully reliable and comfortable product. Fast and really good looking too. It was 9 years old when I bought it in 1981 for 999 bucks. I was 16 and saved money for years cutting grass with my grandfather’s business. Memories...

My first car in 1978 was a 1970 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme coupe. Sherwood Green with buckets and console. $725. Kept it for nine years. Now I have Oldsmobiles I have owned for thirty years!

Love the videos, Bill. I think that correct, reproduction decals are fine and improve the overall presentation of a vehicle.

Very nice Cutlass!! I once owned a 1972 Cutlass S, 2 door hard top, 350 2bbl, in a metallic bronze colour. It was one of my favourite cars and the closest I ever got to a 442. The biggest difference in those days was how difficult it was to find information. It was like being in the dark ages compared to today. It was really hard to know what was available, at what cost and where. Researching today is so simple in comparison. Over the years, I’ve had a few nice cars, but I think those GM mid sized 2 door hard tops and convertibles were the perfect size, whether they were Chevelles, GTO’s, 442’s or GS’s.

It's always a pleasure to listen to Bill's "Corona-Virus-Whiskey-Voice". It's no problem at all to listen to that "CVWV" for hours.
