This car is all me. It's not that I don't like the direction Cadillac took, and it's not that I don't appreciate how good modern Cadillacs are - particularly the V models - but they really are built by people who don't like Cadillacs very much.
This car was. Wire wheel covers, vinyl top, pencil thin steering wheel, anemic V8, luxo-barge suspension on a full frame, over-assisted steering and brakes, and a boulevard ride that could soothe even the angriest toddler. Inside there are yards of dead cow with pillow upholstery, expanses of faux wood paneling, chrome, and plush carpet a mile deep. Even the radio knobs are fake wood. It's got more in common with a Belgian Bordello than a vehicle interior, and - damn it - that's the way it should be.
This was one of the cars of my youth - growing up in a well-to-do retirement town, the local Cadillac dealer looked like Versailles, and behemoths like these roamed the well manicured streets, pampering occupants in rich comfort. Even as kids, we learned to love and appreciate how good and comfortable these cars were.
So it's a treat to have one this nice in stock. I've been finding any excuse to drive it, and am enjoying every slow comfortable cruise down memeroy lane. What a great machine.
1983 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham D'Elegance. Full review and test drive by Bill, along with a history of the name. Vehicle is for sale at Autohaus of Naples - www.AutohausNaples.com, or call us at (239) 263-8500.

@@captainamericaamerica8090 These were by no means junk, with the notable exception of the engine, unfortunately. The car is solid besides. I had one of these when I was a teenager and got hit by someone. On my car, the bumper guard for the license plate got knocked off and my headlight cracked. The front of the other guy's car was decimated and his car got totaled. I drove home and his car left on a flatbed for the junkyard. I owned the car for many years and had very few problems. Granted, I was lucky since the engine was rebuilt when I got it so I didn't suffer the classic HT 4100 issues, with the exception of its lack of power. This engine wasn't meant for these full-sized cars, though, as it was designed for the much smaller and lighter front wheel drive models that got delayed until 1985.

Coupes have fallen out of favor but seriously, this car has more rear leg room and easier entry and exit than 90% of the sedans made today. You make it big enough and a coupe can be fine for a family.

@@jacktorse2145 You are right. This is the wrong year for this car. Cadillac knew this engine was junk and that was evidence by the fact that the commercial chassis they built had the 350 instead of the 4.1L. They knew the commercial chassis cars had to keep running.

Thanks for bringing back great memories. Now I have a 82 Seville elegante with 60,000 miles and ever time I drive it it reminds me of running around the Cadillac dealer as a kid checking out all the new caddies. God those poor salesmen. Nothing like the smell of a new Cadillac. Although my 08 Escalade ext and my wife's 13 cts4 don't have that same smell. Guess it was the leather they used to use. Having a shitty day that video really helped, thanks Bill.

My first new car. 82 Fleetwood Brougham. Slate Grey with blue velour, it looked like a big piece of soft candy. Very pretty car. HT4100 Engine, terrible. I would change the oil every 1500 miles because I knew coolant would seep into the engine, and when Cadillac did the callback for those engines all they did was put sealer in the radiator. Worked great, yeah right. Definitely lot of room in the car. My girlfriend at the time would lay across the front seat facing me with her head on my shoulder while I was driving. How cute. Quick story only because it's a long time ago and we're talkin about an older car. We would go to this elderly woman's house just to visit her because she basically had no one, and I remember her seeing us at the door and with such excitement she'd say, look at the young faces! Now all these years later I find myself thinking that. Time waits for no-one boys and girls!! The Bible says you're life is like a vapor, it appears for a short while then vanishes away

Beautiful car and very well done video - My first car was the 1983 Coupe De Ville with the dreaded diesel engine... It was the same Claret Red (same color as the one in the video with the same interior except no leather), a white rag top, a hood 6 1/2 miles long and got 25-30 miles to the gallon. When she was actually running she rode like a dream. I took my driver’s test in her - never forgot the instructor’s face when I parallel parked her in 2 moves on my first try. I’ve been around the world and driven many rental cars and trucks, even the new escalades, and never ever have I found anything that rode as smooth as these old caddies - you were gliding on air in them

Having just watched your older review of the 1990 Brougham D'Elegance 4-door, it's uncanny how almost identical the two cars' interiors are. The apex, the zenith of luxury in interiors. No, there weren't touch screens, MP4, Bluetooth, &c. But they weren't needed. Now if only Chrysler had been able to keep the Imperial line going and competing. Perhaps even more luxurious appointments would have evolved. Such beauty, such sculpture will not ever be replicated.

6:15 Cadillac derives the brougham name from the “brougham” roof style. Same as how Landau also originated from a roof style. Broughams but definition are an open front (for the chauffeur) with an enclosed rear cabin for the rear passenger. Think open top 1930s limousines. Cadillac derived the name from their 1955 Motorama concept car that originally featured this roof configuration. Once the brougham went into production (without the roof) in 1958, the name stuck and was used as a top tier trim through the 1960s-1980s.
