In 1980, the Mini ceased to be British Leyland's primary small car and began a new life in a niche economy market.
Through the decade, Austin Rover launched a multitude of special editions along with some mechanical improvements to keep the Classic Mini ticking over before it was reborn under Rover for the 1990s - complete with an all-new Mini Cooper.

Whilst all Minis have the gearbox in the sump, sharing oil with the engine, that is unusual but not unique. What is unique is a torque converter type automatic transmission doing so. And each of the lower 3 gears can actually be held, where as selecting a lower gear on most other autos just prevents the transmission going above that gear, not below.

Not really. It being an automatic means it's a lot easier for Alex to bomb about in. In fact, if it was a manual, he would not have bought it as the automation for the clutch he'd need to drive it didn't exist at the time.

What a find! I like the auto too, slow but still huge fun. I had a Mayfair auto in the late nineties which shared drive space with a Mercedes W123 280E and a Lexus LS400. The Mini was my default choice for local trips around the Essex/Suffolk border area. Just perfect on the narrow twisty roads between Colchester and Ipswich. Oh boy! I really miss that now. Thanks Ed.

The little minis were not cheap I remember standing in the air Rover dealership looking at the 200 and the minis there was £100 difference in price it’s the price that killed the old mini off and the automatic which I had was a plonker 25 miles to the gallon on a mini must say though I’ve loved the old minis and and I Miss them best car to drive

My dad had an automatic Mini. Ann Australian K series. 1968. It was purple and known as the bionic grape. He often had it serviced by a Rolls-Royce mechanic in Albert Street Auckland NZ. As teenagers we would take it out to a back road, tie the steering, put it in drive, pull out the choke and let it drive itself. We had to chase it down the road as it would accelerate into third gear on its own. I had to climb out the window of my mates 1973 Toyota Carona and climb into the Mini to stop the bloody thing. 1980s NZ.....such fun

The Mini auto box was interesting in that it would freewheel in first gear. If you were coming down a mountain pass and the drum brakes were fading, second gear was the lowest you could select if you wanted engine braking. Select first gear and it really was like a go-cart - the sort your Dad would knock up in his shed from an old pram, without brakes!

I learnt to drive in a mini - a mini Mayfair !. I wish I’d bought one now before they went out of production. Such fun to drive, but not something for the motorways, very frightening next to an HGV. The grunt from the Austin engine six inches in front of your kneecaps reminded you how vulnerable you were in any impact, no airbags or crash zones those days. Memorable fun, if only they still made them.....but Europe would never allow it....exhaust emissions etc...

Great video and a terrific little car. Working for an Austin Rover Dealer back in the day what always amazed me about the Mini was that they had no PVC underbody protection or even underseal, if they were luck they might get a very thin coating of wax in some places. As far as i understand Austin Rover never incorporated an undersealing plant on the Mini assembly line. Shame there might be more on the road.
@TwinCam
@TwinCam 3 года назад
Considering this one is 100% original, it's amazing to see just how badly protected they are. There is wax, albeit a tiny amount smeared on the underside. The spraying is even worse. The box section under the front seats is mainly just in primer, while they barely bothered in the companion boxes.

I would stand corrected but I'm pretty sure at this time the Mini sunroof was a dealer fit option as all the cars came from the without one. I used to hate it when I used to be given a PDI and it said on the worksheet "fit sunroof" by this time it was only Mini that had the glass pop up sunroof as Montego and Maestro had proper slide and tilt sunroofs but back in the day we used to fit them in Marina/Ital, Dolomite, Princess and the rest of the range and the larger cars had three different sizes. That first cut into the roof and the headlining was terrifying, many customers opted for the cheaper Britax aftermarket sunroofs but the BL sunroof with fitting kit had a nice felt finisher for the interior aperture whereas the cheaper Britax one was Ike a windscreen rubber. What a lovely little car in superb condition from an era when all car were not silver or grey.
@TwinCam

Mk2 Metros (84-90) did indeed have metric wheels. A few other manufacturers dabbled with metric sizes in the same era, but of course nothing came of it. I think Austin Rover were one of the first because they had a good deal with Dunlop - who also manufactured the Hydragas cans for them.

@@TwinCam Hi Ed. Just checked online, in the U.S. rear fog lights are not required as we might mix them up with brake lights. Keep up the great work....

Interesting video. I love the Mini but shudder at how poorly they perform in a crash; BMW had no option but to redesign for improved safety.
@TwinCam
@TwinCam 3 года назад
That's not surprising for a tiny car from 1959! In the same way nobody would expect a car from 1990 get anything other than 0 stars in a crash test.

@@TwinCam Yes other cars designed years ago which are potential death traps would be the original Fiat 500 & the Citroen 2 CV (and of course there are others). However, like the Mini they were / are much admired.

I had 2 in the 80s. Other cars weren't as huge and intimidating then.

The shocking thing is that my lil Metro is pretty large next to it. That being said, I don't feel too small in my Metro now, overtaking large trucks with wheels larger than my car is just the norm now ;)

6:03 i saw those stalks and thought they looked familiar, after you said 'the same ones you'll see on landrovers', I realised their exactly the same as the ones in my dads 1996 defender!

No? It's an A-Series just like in every British market Mini.

Wow, the Mini sure had a good run... And so did drum brakes apparently too, that was a shocker. Mind you that car is probably not difficult to stop at reasonable speeds. Nice presentation as always.

What a lovely example and an interesting history too. I owned two Minis. The second was a 1990 H reg 'Racing Green' limited edition which looked just like the Cooper, down to the minilite wheels. Great fun to drive butI couldn't get on with the cramped driving position so I replaced it with a newer less exciting supermini.

That's a shame :( Although the steering wheel angle is odd, I'd live with one just for the weekends! I would possibly fit a lowering bracket though.

I can't remember noticing a smell, but all the switches click in a way I've never seen before in a Mini. Even the interior light switch is tight.
