Boy, Oh BOY! This was my first time driving a BMW 5 series and I do have to say, I am impressed! Despite not having the proper tires on the vehicle, the car performed great, way better than i expected, and also left me yearning for more, to see the 5 series at its full potential.
This is the newest generation (7th) of BMW's 5 series and the menacing looks it gives on the road are quite fitting for it's luxurious elaborate interior. To compete with its competitors (Audi A6, Benz E400, Genesis G80), BMW came full force with ambient lighting, 2 LCD monitors, and navigation w/ Real time traffic display just to name a few.
The 2 ton sedan has a turbocharged 3.0L I6 engine that produces 335hp and 332 lb-ft of torque that will accelerate the luxury sedan from 0-60 in just 4.7 seconds. If thats not fast enough, BMW offers this same car with a twin turbo 4.4L V8 called the M550i xDrive, that will accelerate from 0-60 in a whopping 3.8 seconds!
Although the right tires were not on the vehicle (speed ratings for front tires different from rear), the ride quality was damp, yet enjoyable! The seats were VERY comfortable, the steering felt like how it would in a BMW, and the legroom and visibility from the driver seat were spot on! I could really see myself owning one of these cars for a little while, just because its so much fun to drive! That turbo charged I6 sounds absolutely amazing!
Now let us talk about value. Is it worth it? When this car first made its entrance, it cost $60,000 stock and with $20,550 worth of possible options. Meaning you possibly paid as much as $80,550+tax for a 2018 540i xDrive but right now in todays market, that same car is only worth $35,647- $41,536 (according to Kelly Blue Book). On CarGurus, some cars are even listed below $30,000 with low mileage and some go as high as $48,000. At any rate, this cars value is depreciating fast but in the market right now, its actually a STEAL! If you want to upgrade from your 3series to a bigger car or switch from your Genesis G80 to a BMW, this is your best bet!
On the other hand, you could have and still can get a Mercedes E400. That car has, and still is holding its value tremendously and also has a self driving feature called Drive Pilot, costing almost $10,000 extra, but will actively allow the car to drive itself, even up to speeds of 130mph and follow lanes at speeds up to 81 mph, even lanes that have faded away or are not marked well.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and honestly, I love all cars and I'm just happy I got a chance to drive this beautiful beast for the first time.
