Third-grade math teacher Shelby Lattimore has been teaching her students about “classroom economy” where she teaches them different ways to be mindful of spending and budgeting. On the first of every month, Lattimore’s students pay her $7 in play money for their desks and chairs. They can earn money through jobs like feeding the class pet and taking up other responsibilities around the classroom. Lattimore has also taken to TikTok where the TikTok Creator Fund has helped keep her from taking up a second job. Lattimore is now able to spend more time with her students before and after school, as well as educating others through her channel.

That's awesome. My fourth grade teacher did this same thing. We had money, a bank, jobs, and even a Court. You could sue your classmates if they did something wrong to you. A kid threw a football at my head during recess and I sued him and took a lot of his money. It was actually a genius way to teach kids about life.

My fifth grade teacher, waaaay back in 1969 used this same approach during one semester. Though she gave us, each student; "checkbooks" that she had created. Doing pretty much the same thing as this teacher. We earned "money" that we deposited, budgeted and spent. All while we added, subtracted, multiplied and divided. She also included teaching us to use our best penmanship (that others could easily read) AND to develope our "signatures". To this day I use the signature I had created during that time. I think of this often and remember it like it was last month, not 55 years ago. We felt responsible, had fun and learned the usefulness of Math and Penmanship. Those few months made more impact on me; than anything else I learned during my grammer (and HS) school years. It was a fun way to learn a lifelong, to this day, lesson. ❤ RIP Miss Donovan ❤ (The best teacher ever.)

@twinkletoes6290
@twinkletoes6290 4 месяца назад
@@0H9DI think the vast amount of the younger generations don’t know how to balance their checkbooks these days. Honestly, they don’t even know what that is, what it means, what the purpose of it is, let alone how to do it or that it’s a real thing! Even though we don’t write checks like we used to, where it was one of our main forms of how we paid for transactions and the main way we paid for all of our bills, and therefore needed to balance our checkbook regularly, we should still be “balancing our checkbook” via our online banking and all the bank/debit card transactions, as well as any physical checks we write and balancing our actual checkbook! Way too many ppl just look at their available balance via their online banking and just rely on it all to be done automatically by technology. Instead of actually looking through all your transactions, making sure they’re all correct and for the correct amount, making sure those are all your transactions and there aren’t any unauthorized transactions - not only relying on the bank to catch those bc while banks are pretty good at that, they can miss things bc the transaction doesn’t send up an alert that it’s unusual spending, monitoring transactions your kids may be making w your card via it being hooked up to their phone or they have your card details saved as a payment option associated w their account from somewhere they’ve ordered before, if they’re making transactions through the shared Amazon account or buying online movies and stuff like that. Just making sure everything lines up, nothing odd is going on, being able to track your spending amount and budget correctly or set a new budget (to be able to put more in savings, or if you’re saving up for a more expensive purchase like a trip/vacation, a big item purchase that will be expensive, etc). Also keeping an eye out for those test transactions of less than a dollar or about a dollar or two that criminals make once they get your card details to check to see if it will go through before they go on a costly shopping spree w your account! If you catch those test transactions, you can get on the phone w your bank right away before the criminals get to go on the shopping spree, so you avoid all the hassle of all the fraudulent charges you’ll have to deal w afterwards, getting your bank to send you a new card, etc. Way too many ppl rely and trust the bank and technology to be doing all the work and balancing their account for them, which isn’t a smart thing to do! So, we still should be balancing our checkbooks via online banking transactions w the bank/debit card and any actual checks and checkbooks, while also using that info to track our own spending habits and be more wise about how we spend our money, budget correctly throughout the month, budget correctly for the month ahead at the start of the month, set a new budget for specific goals like saving more, making a big item purchase that’s expensive, etc!

There is no sutch thing as race when it comes to people or any other animal species for that matter. It's a mentality, and a discusting one at that. There is however somthing called species, but not among humans. The last other human species where the neanderthal, and all of them died out about 40.000 years ago. All living humans of today are of the same species, we just look different. And that dosent make us in to different species.

This reminded me of something we had in my classroom back in fifth grade. Everyone had a "job", each with different pay, with the class president being paid the most. I was a banker, and I made a mid-grade salary, higher than a lot of people but still substantially less than the president. My job was to maintain and update all of the Excel spreadsheet records of every student's transactions. All of us paid rent. There were fines for breaking classroom rules, like messy desk fines, with violations of the class constitution carrying the harshest fines. These fines were enforced by student "cops" who could write tickets. Some students charged others money to borrow their stuff. At the end of each trimester, we had an auction where the teacher would sell stuff to the highest bidder. One oddity that I noticed as a banker: the girls tended to be richer than the boys.

Bless this woman and others like her who teach children about money. Not only is it hands on that the kids experience what dealing with money is like especially with essential payments but it molds their relationship with money. They learn the value of it and learn the basics of managing it. Not to mention the responsibility of handling it. It makes them more equipt to deal with the real world and is something they would carry out to their adulthood. This would have really helped me who wasn't taught about personal finances in an environment where money wasn't talked much about in a healthy and helpful way. More power to her and others like her.

one of the best things my parents did for us was, when we wanted more pocket money, they eventually said ok, but now you are responsible for certain things. First it was paying for my own sweets, eventually it got to where I had to buy my own clothes with the money provided. the only things provided was my school uniform (in my country public schools have uniforms) and other items for school. Everything else I wanted I had to use my pocket money. Then when I left school I had to pay rend while staying at home. True it wasn't a lot of money they asked for, but it was the principal and lesson of budgeting they kept teaching us about. Making sure we had good habbits for life. Unfortunately these days many people have bad spending habits and no good role models to show how to do it. The world needs more people like this teacher. We need more teachers period. Sad to say the world over teachers are the ones paid almost nothing, yet they are the ones shaping our world one child at a time.

I have been saying this should be taught in public schools for decades! All this time, I never imagined such an applicable, creative way to teach the lesson. FANTASTIC, BRILLIANT, ABOVE AND BEYOND!!! 🏆👏🏾

Oh I’m sorry I forgot my 3rd grade teacher mr. Medlock kinda did this but with checks and check books. Love you wherever you are mr. Medlock. Also my 8th grade math teacher a couple years was going to do this with play money and teach us about finances but unfortunately the school wouldn’t let him . Their exc were use was budget cuts and they wanted him to focus on the mandatory curriculum for the year. He did manage to teach us a little but nowhere near what he wanted too. Love and miss you . Mr. Potts ( my at school dad as I called him because he always looked after me making sure to catch the bullies and advocate for me as I’m special needs) . 8th grade as well as kindergarten were r the only 2 years I wasn’t the bullies main target. I was bullied twice in 8th grade but after mr. Potts handled them it didn’t happen anymore and until this day I still don’t know how he stopped it but I’m forever grateful and thankful. My 5th grade teacher advocate and tried to protect me but the bullies were so sneaky that year and I didn’t want to be a tattletale as I was already known as te😊achers pet and goody 2 shoes. Thank you and love you bou

Love it! Printed up my own money and ran my classroom like this for my last 15 years before retiring. Really started popping when I got a toaster oven and I started selling brownie mix, popcorn, etc. I paid the kids for mastering objectives and time on task. Also had a list of misbehaviors they could buy, like leaning on two legs of their chair. Rewarding positive behavior is a more efficient use of time than punishing behaviors that bug the teacher. Don;t get me started on how much better it is for all of us to be respected like this.

What an amazing teacher. I wish I had a teacher like her growing up. I hope she continues to strive for the best. Good for her teaching those kids important life skills and lessons on her own like that. She is a keeper that is for sure.

These kids don’t know how blessed they are yet. They will remember her when they’re adults. I wish I had an adult who taught me things like this at that age- and I’ve heard so many people for years say that these things should be taught in school because not everyone’s parents teach financial responsibility or even have it themselves. Awesome teacher right there!

I’ve been in education for over 33 years. I am so happy to see the excitement and passion in her eyes and face. I wish every person in education had this. Turning the light on for them is so rewarding and it’s exciting to see what she is challenging her students with and the skills they are learning. Keep it up!!!

Writing a check was taught in the 90s when I went to middle school. But cursive was a something we we taught also and became non existent but is coming back to schools now.

@@gerrittlighthartI mean yeah nowadays paying online has made paying with a check unnecessary but it's still important to make a budget and actually be aware of how much money your spending and plan it out and not just spend willy nilly then look at your bank account and be dumbfounded about what happened to all your money.

Dates are your national identity and understanding history is they key for shared cultural values keeping a society strong.
@vivalaleta
@vivalaleta 4 месяца назад
@@FakenameStevens Absolutely not. It's far better to teach children what happened than weighing them down with remembering the dates of when wars began, etc. You'll never need that information again. I, for one, was taught next to nothing about geography or anything else about other countries than mine. That's ridiculous.
