1) I grew up in the company town of Nichols, Fla. I worked at this plant. 2) It is true that The AEC contracted with Virginia Carolina Chemical Corporation and there was a pilot plant for extraction of uranium from phosphate rock. 3) This was in the 1950s and had no connection with the Manhattan Project. 4) The pilot plant was destroyed after the AEC contract. 5) What is left of the old plant is mostly the concrete dry bins and the dual rotary dryer building. 6) Gone are the two calcine plants, the elemental phosporus plant, the small sulfuric acid plant and the fertilizer plant. The unique double arm stacker is gone. This was a much larger plant after the 1954 additions and the 1960 new calcine plant.

I grew up in the county south of there. My daddy was a phosphate mine employee for many years. It's funny that you mentioned it being Bone Valley. As a kid, we went on field trips every year to the phosphate mines. We always found tons of fossils and were allowed to bring them home. The land they mine is made into pasture land with large ponds, typically. These ponds have fish, but some of them are deformed and have abnormalities that are due to the mining. The land is not great for buildings after mining due to land settling and cracks in the walls forming. Super interesting info! I have not seen anyone explore this one.

The ponds are very radioactive, there’s no fishing there. They’re called gypsum stacks. It leaves land that’s good for nothing. That’s why it’s called bone valley. How many grazing animals do you know of that eat “grass” that’s bone white rock?

@@gottagrind2shine607 nobody can fish or swim in them. Every hurricane season it’s another possible radiological disaster. Uranium and radium are there. When you strip 20 Sq mi of topsoil, and dump what’s not phosphorus or water soluble in a “lake”, that “lake” is now a radioactive nightmare. You should learn something more bud. 😘

I made my living for 32 years in the phosphate industry. This whole area of Florida is covered up in this industry which seems to lose attention to the other facets of Florida. The importance of this industry continues to this day. You have shown the old--now do chapter 2 and show the current phosphate industry. Do you want to eat? You need phosphate fertilizer.

I am from Polk county Florida. I have fished in so many phosphate pets. It’s some of the best fishing as a kid that I had ever done. Really just for pure fun not for size and all of that. Those pits can make some of the prettiest little ponds with the bluest of water. we never ate the fish. I don’t know how clean they are coming out of a phosphate lake lol but it was fun.

this video is awesome. worry somewhat when you step close to the edges being afraid you might fall. you guys are doing an amazing job. you should think about getting some merchandise . I know id wear a Ghosts Vs Bros tee shirt. helps support you guys when you go on trips. just an idea. be careful when you enter sites that produced uranium. and asbestos.Mostly asbestos. which is in most of the buildings you enter to make sure you're wearing a good respiratory Mask. I worked in the medical field and have seen patients pass away just from washing their spouse's clothing. that had asbestos dust Be safe guys enjoy all the videos you have my support. looking forward to seeing more.
