Even advanced Ableton users get writer's block sometimes, and it's nice to have a few tricks in the bag to get past these dry spells and jumpstart inspiration. In this Ableton Quick Tip tutorial, I'll be briefly outlining a great technique for setting up a Drum Rack and generating endless, randomized sample sequences.

A few people have commented that this technique is "lazy" or doesn't count as music composition. I get where they're coming from, but I think they're failing to understand 3 things: 1. In the video above, you're hearing raw material as it comes out of the rack. The bits and pieces I kept and arranged prior to making this tutorial are silenced, it's not supposed to sound like that when you're done editing. 2. I solo'd the drums and rack so you could hear what's going on, but this project had 46 total tracks and wasn't even finished. I used the rack on 3 of them, for ONE section of the arrangement. Nobody makes an entire song out of a single technique, but perhaps the video's title implied that you can, in which case my bad. 3. If you're going to condemn using something like this on 3 tracks out of 46, you should also condemn stuff like hi-hat and shaker loops as well. At which point you're nearing the danger zone of becoming a musical purist who believes you have to make your own kick drums to call yourself a true producer. The point of music is to feel good, make you dance, enhance your life. If you listen to people who overanalyze and try to make it about ego, you're probably missing the whole point.

Music isn’t a sport. There isn’t a “correct” way to compose music. Your approach is creative and if it sparks ideas or let’s you make something that’s sounds good, I see no reason to be ashamed. If it sounds good, it is good.

Coming from an electronic music producer who loathes using full, unaltered loops rather than applying some sort of manipulation, and other purist insecurities that I’ve recovered from, you’re good. Sampled music has literally been in existence for almost a century at this point. People are just insecure. EDIT: Btw, dope arrangement.
