In my rec league, there's always someone standing on the target line ready to volley. hmm. like the shot, but as in other comments, I'd love to example in live play. lovin the videos

Great video, thanks! What grip do you use for the backhand version of this shot?

Thank you! A lot of backhand rolls like this need a continental grip and sometimes even more. So if you're right-handed, you'll rotate your grip to the left a bit more than usual.

A tennis friend of mine called this shot a "buggy whip" which he moved over to pickleball. This shot, when executed right, is nasty.

It's called hitting on the outside of the ball. It's all about the point of contact when discussing the direction the ball will travel off your paddle face.

Barrett----great tutorial. 1 question and one comment: I often hit the shot short into the net even tho I swing upward and 'brush' the ball, so WHY? Comment: you suggest a grip that closes the paddle some, but slo mo of your stroke shows that your paddle is slightly OPEN at contact, every time??

Thanks Tom! Yes, the grip will close off the paddle more than it currently is, but that doesn't mean that it's necessarily closed. It's just closed off more than it is. Know what I mean? Sometimes the paddle face is open or closed and that's a feel thing that you'll only gain through experience.

It’s a nice tool to add to your arsenal . It’s used when the both opponents are behind the back line and it could also be followed by a strong shot between the players as the spread trying to tackle back this shot. I don’t get the negative comments, the more difficult shots you know and better control gives you advantage to win strategically in this game.

Realistically speaking when playing doubles... this transition shot of going to other side...your doubles partner will be taking the hits in return by doing this shot. Will always get caught defensively unprepared with offensive return from opponents. May try this same play with four players to find out what I mean.

I wouldn't say this is an advanced shot. This is a shot that only tall people can accomplish good enough to where it actually works well

It’s a great shot, I just don’t see many drops on the forehand side of the court. Backhand version is probably more practical to get good at.

that's not a third shot drop he's hitting back....a real one is about two inches above the tape...try to do his overhand spin on that and it will go right into the net....the shot exists to force a dink return
