The Mark W Barker was in port Colborne earlier this year, but that was as far as the ship went.
Today however, she's coming into Port Colborne and heading out on the St Lawrence Seaway for the first time.
As the ship enters Port Colborne, she has to undergo an inspection before she can enter the Welland Canal.
This ship caught the eye of quite a few enthusiasts, many spotters were down in Port Colborne to see Mark W Barker arrive.
I went one further and hung around over 3 hours to watch her enter the Welland Canal, the first part of the St Lawrence Seaway.
The MV Mark W. Barker was built by Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin.
The ship is operated by the Interlake Steamship Company, and was launched in 2022, it is the first U.S.-flagged, Jones Act-compliant ship built on the Great Lakes since 1983.

Last year Mark Barker grounded on Belle Island, Detroit River. That’s where it got some of those scratches 😂

Great video, I'm really glad you caught this arrival! I don't know if you noticed the ATB (Pere Marquette 41/Undaunted) unloading next to the Mark W in your drone footage, but they might make a cool subject for a video in the future. Both the tug and the barge have a really interesting history.

I was watching them just before Barker arrived. Good idea btw, I'll try and capture them at some point.

Since the start of the season, I've really got into this. You need patience of course. I got that from years of plane spotting back in the day

@@NigelHay oh yes. It shows in the videos that you’re enjoying the subject, cos you do your homework, it’s funny when you forget tho. Did you plane spot at Manchester by any chance? Xx

@lyndacottam397 thanks Lynda. When I managed to video the Keewatin 18 months ago, I realized that I would enjoy doing this. Infact, I've enjoyed it so much my other projects have taken a back seat

Good catch! 👍 First time an Interlake ship did the Welland canal? Perhaps she got the contract as the Michipicoten is still out of service. The older lakers are more suited to these runs, that’s why they’re still around. See she’s not fully loaded, as the canal draft is too shallow.

Didn't take her long to unload either, she's already heading back

Ogdensburg, NY is on the St Lawrence River which means the ship will have to pass thru the Thousand Islands. I'd be interested in knowing when the last American laker transited the Welland Canal. I'm guessing it's been a while. The footers are too big.
