25:42 Pairs Event 26:26 why the Chinese pair teams didn’t come is still unknown. Dave do you think it’s politics? 27:49 the Japanese pairs they were so amazing here, mistakes in the free but otherwise solid performances! 29:10 Georgian pair, I honestly didn’t expect them to be in the top 4 here, what a wonderful surprise! 29:46 Anastasiia Shabotova being kicked out of the Ukrainian team for liking pro-war Instagram post by Plushenko…her possibilities of competing are unknown at this time. She was forced to withdraw from worlds due to this. 36:02 back to the Japanese Pair team and then the US teams 36:46 Ashley and Timothy, so devastating in the free program, I hope she is ok.

I actually got pretty emotional watching this competition, during multiple disciplines. The pure quality of the skating, the genuine reactions, the feeling that you really didn't know what the results were going to be ahead of time. It was even refreshing to see some of the best in the world with minor imperfections or under-rotations. Because it didn't feel like we were watching something produced in a factory. That is clean sport. And it really hit home how much I missed it.

Nicely said. I totally agree. This worlds was refreshing, honest, exciting, and I too was emotional with some of the wins. I especially enjoyed the Ice Dancers beautiful display of talent without the threat of corrupt judges looking for a reason to knock down their marks so the Russian ice dance team could be marked higher. Watching the edges from Hubbell and Donahue was good, although it pisses me off all over again, that they didn't win Silver at the Olympics due to politics. I also enjoyed Kaori's skating, she is powerful, fast, has great technique, unmatched edging, high jumps, and has a pure joy of skating that is contagious. Amazing weekend of skating!

Jonathan, I agree with you about Kaori’s program. How appropriate given everything that occurred with the Russian GIRLS at the Olympics. As soon as I heard that line “what is it that you want from me, is it my soul, is it my body,” I was in instant tears. It was almost like that line was a direct response to what we saw happen at the Olympics and the conditions in which the Eteri girls train. And to see it skated by a young woman, not a girl, who is a normal size and not emaciated…I mean it was definitely a moment for me and I was in tears the entire time.

Me too!! It's so refreshing to see three young WOMEN on the podium with adult bodies, not prepubescent and emaciated ones. Of course Alysa is still very young but she looks a lot more like I did at 15/16, whereas Shcherbakova looks more like I did when I was seriously mentally unwell. Ofc disordered eating can happen at any size, but you can't fly like Kaori and be eating "a chocolate bar a day" as Medvedeva did pre-2018 Olympics (she said so in an interview). I was so thrilled for Loena and Alysa too. It was a really nice atmosphere in the press conference, none of the weird tension and hysterics like after Beijing.

You are absolutely right on several points you made about the men. The men who have been ahead of Shoma in recent years kept doing the same programs to different music. Camden should keep going & build on this performance. And, lastly, you were spot on that the difference between Nathan & Vincent is that Nathan is confident & loves what he’s doing. Which is very sad when you think of Vincent and what we know he has endured and what he’s been through that hasn’t leaked out. Ironically, his mother kept him from achieving more success in the sport by pushing him so hard to be Nathan. I shudder to think of what we don’t know about in that situation. I can only hope he can go to college now without his mom around and find a good therapist.

I competed all through my youth, onward into my 30's and also did choreography and I feel like I am watching horrific technique be rewarded with astronomical scores and I can't wrap my head around it. I've been watching skating for 40+ years, and this Worlds by far was the best and most enjoyable. No toxic Russian drama!!!! So proud of all of the skaters!!!!! Especially proud of Team USA!!! It was just wonderful to watch :)))) Just want to add I've never been a fan of Simon Reed. I think he's way too opinionated and down right rude and has been over the years of listening to him commentating. What he said about Megan Duhamel was way out of line!!!! I also remember he gave his "back handed" compliments to Davis & White all the time. Most especially the 2011 World Championships he declared Virtue & Moir champions before Davis & White even skated. He was OBVIOUSLY biased against Meryl & Charlie. After I heard that, didn't even want to listen to Eurosport videos. We all knew he liked V/M better, but he's supposed to be a professional. I didn't care about his personal opinion and sure many others didn't either. I'm glad they dumped him!!! Thanks for this video. You guys are great!!!!!

Oh, I almost forgot - so incredibly impressed by Camden! I thought I would be nervous for him but when I saw him skate out for the free, I stopped worrying early on. He just seemed so sure of himself all of a sudden. There was this weird energy in the arena from skating fans on the edge of their seats ("is he going to do this, with the season that he's had?") and more casual fans who were going "wow, this guy knows how to do it". Really hope this is a turning point for him!

@@rosie94204 I disagree their monopoly is not detrimental to ice dance. They are not a school who produces cookie cutter ice dance teams. Each team has it own unique style and skill levels differ. The teams have earned their place in the standings, by improving their skating skills, artistry and program choices. They are not automatically given top scores once they come on the scene because of their coaching team. Case in point, Smart/Diaz and Chock/Bates to name a few.

Yeah one thing that always annoyed me was seeing the unhappy reactions to VERY high scores from Eteri's skaters. They would only be happy if it was a PB or a world record, otherwise they would just have a blank reaction or just shrug. Granted they're not the only ones who do that but when they're winning the competition by 20-30 points already, it just looks snobby to expect higher scores.

YES! I’ve been waiting for this video!! Americans are pairs champs after 43 years, two ice dance medals, and bronze in the ladies’ and mens’ competitions. 😍🇺🇸🥂 But the biggest thing for me, was Kaori Sakamoto. When the Russians were banned, I thought for sure she’d win this and she did. She was GRACIOUS and cheered for everyone else in her group. She’s the world champion that can also be a LEADER for all the young women and girls who want to skate. Be kind, be thankful, be friendly…she did that in Montpellier. Also, it was like something was in the air (or lacking) with the Russians out. Maybe it was a less stressful atmosphere, all the competitors seemed to have a huge weight off their shoulders, and I dare say, were having fun. I suppose not having a Dour Deb like Eteri glaring at them while she’s scheming and scamming was nice for once!

Honestly I haven't really cared for the women's event since 2016 Worlds. Going into 2018 Olympics after what was coming out about the Nasser scandal. My gut told me that bad stuff was happening in Russia to the point of abuse and I could no longer watch. As victum of abuse myself, it was all triggering. I didn't watch gymnastics for almost 5 years going into Tokyo last year. I as a fan feel so validated. I just hate that it took Putin's War to prevent the Russians at Worlds and not the 2022 Beijing Scandal. I really, REALLY hope that all these other nations take the sport back by pushing the ISU, IOC and other federations with influence to actually punish Russia in the future for doping their athletes. This Worlds was just so fun to watch. There was so much joy in the Women's event that I haven't seen in years. Overall the event was just so fun and exciting. I loved people winning Worlds titles and medals they probably thought they may never win.

This World Championships was the best in a while! Not sorry to say that I do not miss the Russian skaters - the skaters that competed here gave us real figure skating, not just jumping, and without the shadow of doping. You guys make a lot of great points on Team Tutberidze, the ridiculous judging/scoring coming from certain countries' federations, actual figure skating analysis vs. the vapid shallow commentary provided by commentators like Johnny & Tara...these things NBC tend not to bother to delve into, and makes me wonder where are our veteran figure skaters to actually inform us viewers what we really want to know beyond 'That quad is worth X points!!'. Congratulations to the women's World medallists Kaori, Loena and Alysa! They skated clean and earned their spots. Alysa helped earn US women 3 spots for next year! She's improved so much. While You Young and Wakaba Higuchi made mistakes that left them off the podium, it was still good to see them; thanks to You Young and Yelim Kim, they've earned South Korea 3 spots too. Good thing SKfed chose them this turn; it's the smartest thing they've done yet. Glad for US for winning gold in pairs, and Miura/Kihara winning Japan's first World medal in pairs! The men's event was predictable, Japan going 1-2. Shoma getting his first World title and Yuma winning silver was good, and Vincent was able to get on the podium after not making it to compete in Beijing. Ilia Malinin is the future of US men's skating; he's going to make it to Milano-Cortina 2026. The ice dance podium was predictable; I was more excited to see the Spanish team perform their Zorro FD.

For whatever reason, this Worlds championship seemed more enjoyable without knowing who will win in the men and pair competition. It felt like the skaters had more motivation knowing that each medal is up for grabs. For ladies, I kind of wished to see Kaori winning, and honestly her reaction after her SP was priceless. I missed that kind of joy! Loena deserved a medal since the Europeans so I am glad it finally happened. Yet, I deeply feel that You was way too underscored and she deserved at least a small 🥉 for the SP. She is gorgeous and she deserves more appreciation from the panel. Overall it was a great competition, and I agree that without the Russian Tutberitze drama we could just seat back and enjoy, yet I don’t feel is fair to ban skaters or athletes from a certain country, for the actions of their politicians. We can all agree that doping isn’t right either, yet we cannot claim that all Russian skaters use the doping to enhance their performance. In a way a competition without Kolyada, who’s skating is pure textbook, or without Tuktamisheva, Boikiva and Kozlovskii, feels a bit odd. Let’s see what comes next…

2022 Championship was an exciting one, not because it was zero-doping one, nor it was with no Russians, but it was “THE HAPPY EVENT” amid wars, earthquakes, volcano eruptions, tornado, airplane crash with no survivors,…… so many dark news rampant on line. I am super happy for Alexa and Brandon. Their win also proves that North Americans have the qualities being on the top of the podium in pairs. I think the federations need to build support to further this momentum. The previous success of Meryl and Charlie, Tessa and Scott (both teams were set up when they were 8 or 9 years old) proved what Elena Bechke said-the difference of Russian’s decades win in pairs was that Russians grew their pairs from kids.

My two cents on whether or not you should cover the chanel one figure skating cup. I don't think you should. It gives some credence to it, and allows Russia to promote their politics both in relation to the ukraine war and their stance on doping. Russian figure skaters are given national honors and government support and publicity. As such they are political figures, even if they haven't chosen it themselves. Russia uses them as political promotion, and as such the event should not be given publicity. I loved the world championship especially the feel of the ladies event, where there was a feeling of hope and relief amongst the competitors, and so much joy on the podium.

I hope they can see how great they are and how they're improving both as a team and as individuals. Hopefully this won't be a flash in the pan partnership and they'll give themselves at least a couple years to build on their successes. It's too strong of a pair to dissolve this quickly. As you mentioned, this is a fantastic chance for them to be strong medal contenders at every event next season. They have a special kind of athleticism and energy, they could easily go until 2026 physically. But one year at a time. I think a good rest this summer will recharge them.

Agreed. It always seems like she barely gets by in the jump category, but then her scores don’t reflect that deficit… I feel like at this level, you shouldn’t be celebrating that you “landed” all the jumps at the end when the program only consisted of triples and double axel. She doesn’t even do a 2A in combination anymore, she does a sequence with 2A being the second jump (less points). Her skating skills, spins and artistry are gorgeous, but her jumps are lacking. Maybe it’s time for a new coach that will better support her?

@@Dolly_junkie That single Triple toe in the free skate! It’s so nice to see someone skate with joy, but it seems like others are having to do a lot more than her to get by.

I know you don't like the bolero very much, but having seen it in the arena, I have to say, that program composition is absolute genius - the fact that it doesn't end with the spins, for one, which almost every other program does and where you often go "right, this is basically it, final 2 spins now" - here there's just Shoma's explosion of a step sequence and then bam, you're done! For the casual fans who haven't seen it a lot, it was a collective gasp of "Oh my god, it's over!". And yes, he does well with the softer music, but this showed off his power more - bolero makes inadequate skaters look tiny, it made our little Shoma look taller :-)

It's a trash empty program, only the StSq is good and this is precisely the reason why it's in the very end of the program. Judges will remember what happened in the last 30 seconds not the 3.5 minutes crossovers and 2foot skating before it.
@113musikpolizei6

Lol, must be hard for some people not to be able to have their obsessive Nathan/Yuzu discussions in the comments. The program was as "empty" as a five quad, two triple axel program unfortunately has to be, but still choreographically better than most five quad programs I've seen over the years. I didn't mind the crossovers much here and I just love his intensity in every move that he does. But have fun being bitter if you want to. Some people unfortunately are a fan of a skater and not of skating - the fans of skating I know thought this was great ;-)

@@113musikpolizei6 Those 'fans of skating' probably have no idea how this sport works including the judging, this is why they love everything they see. This is funny that no one can criticise a performance anymore and everyone who does it are not 'real skating fans' and 'fans of only one skater'. I bet I attended more events in the past 25 years than you and know more about this sport than you or those 'real skating fans'. Shoma's Bolero is empty, for his crossovers over crossovers he should get much lower transitions score, end of debate. His technique is highly problematic (his floop wasn't called this time either), his GOEs are overscored and he shouldn't have got near 200 for 4T UR, floop, 3F pop and 1 combo less free skate.

@@flywings111 Sorry, must have made assumptions about your username. People often say these things without any idea what they mean. I've been following skating for over 20 years, I understand the issues you are talking about but still find it unfair and bitter to call this an "empty, trashy program" - one can criticise without being insulting, I guess I then replied in the tone you set. If you can give me a five quad, 2 axel program from any skater that is less "empty", go ahead - and don't say Hope and Legacy, while I love that to bits and have watched the Worlds performance inumerable times it isn't exactly full of choreo

I was afraid that worlds would be boring. It was such an amazing competition. Everyone just looked relaxed. It made me more relaxed as a viewer. It was like a detox. I think part of the reason everyone was so emotional at Worlds was just because of how crazy this sport has been over the last season. It was just a release. I did watch the Channel One Trophy using a VPN and they honestly looked more relaxed as well. I mean Kamila did a 2A instead of the 3A in the short program. It looked planned but I could be wrong. Everyone just seemed chill. Even Eteri was laughing more. Sergi was playing with the camera. The girls seemed like they were having fun instead of competing. It seems like it was better for everyone. I’d be curious to hear you guys cover it.

I am a Russian living in Canada for the last 18 years and I vote for you guys not to cover Russian competitions anymore. You know why? Because they - Russian authorities - will continue their state doping program and huge state investments into the sport until they realize nobody is interested, until they realize those achievements are not strengthening Russia's image anymore. And it is all for the benefit of athletes: once the State is not much interested, the athletes won't be pushed so hard to work until they literally break. All these injuries from over-exploiting of athletes, we all can contribute to changing the system. It will help the next generation of Russian athletes and will hopefully let them stay healthy while doing their favorite sport. ... I just cannot forget Medvedeva's answer to the question: "What made you special as a figure skater when you were young?" She replied: "Probably my bones were healing fast..." Can you imagine the level of over-training and over-load for kids in Russian sport? We need to do something to make it stop!
