I appreciate that his character development doesn't come in the middle of a fight like every other anime, but rather in the quiet moments which makes so much more sense.
agreed. whenever I'm in some sort of a situation, I myself don't magically realizing I'm being a fuckass moron most of the time. But afterwards I'm like "oh shit I could have done that better"
This killed Demon Slayer for me. Everyone raved about the awesome animation of the fights... that always have their pacing repeatedly sodomized by multiple giant ass flash backs per fight. I think the last fight of S1 had an entire fucking episode as a mid fight flash back? Not only does this ruin the only redeeming quality of the show, but it's D-tier sentimentality. We are shown the sob backstory of the demon right before MC-kun murks them in a blatant, and poorly done, attempt to make us pray for the devil. And I feel most people only excuse all this sentimental flashback bullshit is because of the high-tier animation. That's it, the shows one and only saving grace.
@@duncanlutz3698 Yeah it has really great start not gonna lie it has great pacing and development even though sometimes i can't stand the MC but after reading the light novel i started dropping it
The Diddler is a top tier meme, considering the controversy around who you used as the Diddler. S+++ Tier. Everything you said is 100% accurate to how I feel about the anime. Fantastic description
I love that unlike other Isekais which features a protagonist reliving a new life from baby to man, Mushoku doesn't rush over the childhood part like a speeding train and takes it time to use that period of the protagonist's life as the most crucial point of his development
That time I got reincarnated as a slime, the devil is a part timer, Rising of the shield hero, Re:Zero, No Game No Life, Log Horizon, Sword Art online, Digimon, Bleach, I can name tons of anime that the anime protagonist just gets dropped in a world at the same age as others. The popular isekai are actually some I think you’d like. Isekai isn’t usually “oh I’m dead but I am now living a new life” it’s typically “Higher being sent me to a new world” or “I died but I willed myself back to life in a new world”
@@zemellion26 and that was completely the opposite fo teh point Carbodude was making. SHield Hero, NGNL, Log Horizon, SAO, Bleach, they all have the mc start at the age they were at when they "died." Carbodude's point was that MT DOESNT do that; that reincarnation starts at birth. He goes through the toddler years in the new world, he goes through the prepubescent years, he goes through the teen years. The crucial sections of a child's developmental stages is experienced all over again, which is what sets it apart.
@@timcal2136 I listed characters who didn't reincarnate. I was going off of this sentence "love that unlike other Isekais which features a protagonist reliving a new life from baby to man" The anime that I listed don't rush through anything. There wasn't any childhood to begin with so it couldn't have been rushed. The OP was talking about specifically reincarnation like, Slime, Konosuba, and others of the sort
@@zemellion26 yeah, so your comment was completely irrelevant. His desire was for an isekai that INCLUDES the childhood arc, AND doesnt rush through that arc. Mentioning isekais that dont even HAVE that arc to begin with is unnecessary
If that's what you're looking for then you should use the reincarnation tag instead. Isekai doesn't require the MC to start from the beginning of life.
I love that rudeus is such a character, its hard for audiences to project themselves on him. The fact that hes such a flawed character that some ppl even get mad is just puts a smile on my face cause I know the redemption arcs he gets.
The fact people can't project themselves into Rudues means he IS a character, and not some bland cookie cutter MC, that looks like every other cookie cutter MC. They generally tend to look the same, Avarage height, with messy black hair and bemused look. Kind of like Kirito. Not that there is anything wrong with that is just nice to have a change.
Your comment isnt liked enough because peopled are offended at how right you are lmao. Most people cant relate to him and get mad at him like you said. Im a sympathetic and empathetic person so I feel for him tho. I know hes a decent guy and I love that he isnt perfect.
I think it goes over most peoples heads that: A. You aren't supposed to like him in the beginning. B. He behaves exactly how you would expect a coomer who reincarnated into another world would. I can get being put off by Rudeus, but given his unflattering introduction, I think it is safe to assume that the Author intended him to be off-putting and not glamorizing his behavior.
Mushoku Tensei might end up being my favorite anime by the time it's done and I've seen A LOT of anime. I've have hungered for a good fantasy adventure anime for so many years and the industry just kept saying no but finally they said yes this year and it's like they were making up for lost time. The animation is amazing, the soundtrack is amazing, the world is amazing, the characters are amazing, the themes and how they are presented is amazing. This show is just a masterpiece and it's only like 20% of the way through the story. I really appreciate how change is handled in this show. So many times in all sorts of stories, characters just change on a dime but thats not how it works in real life. Change is something you work at, habits that have defined you aren't so easily broken and struggling against the comfort of habit over and over again is how we do change to become better people but it's not like we win every battle either. I also love that everyone in this show is changing constantly, not just rudy. Eris is changing, ghislane is changing, sylphiette is changing, roxy is changing, ruijerd is changing, random ass cat kids are changing and the show realistically shows that generally kids change faster but still not over night. God, what an amazing show. It seriously pisses me off that this is the godfather of isekai. Like, all you other fuckers out there writing shit isekai were already bad, but now I know you had a blueprint as great as this and you still end up with trash? Sickening. Just because you come up with some power fantasy gimmick doesn't mean good writing suddenly goes out the window and characters are allowed to be flat and boring. As always, great video.
I've read Mushoku Tensei ever since the author started writing it (in raw Japanese) and was happy when it finally got adapted into Light novel and manga format. As much as I really wanted this to be animated I always know this series is very tough one to animate with how complex the story and setting it has, I was afraid if it's being adapted by a subpar studio it will most likely flop due to the technical difficulties. Easier isekai series getting animated for years even though they started way later after mushoku tensei, making me feel it will never get an anime adaptation. Never in my wildest dream, they would create a whole studio solely to adapt it.
Seriously? MT plot isn’t really interesting. The only really interesting thing so far in the anime is when Rudy gets his teeth kicked in by all mighty god lol.
@@steviejohnson378 lol. MT is plot driven story. Do you think you can predict the story???. Story main plot is only revealed at later series. Then tell me what is the plot of mushoku tensei.it all comes down to plot. Lol. It is not like other shows where they tell you plot at the beginning of show.
That had me so hyped someone "spoiled" it for me and said they'd fight a dragon so i expected some epic boss fight but that well that was 1000 times better
I dunno about that bro... MC acted like a real fucking donut there. First he didn't shut the fuck up then he casually told this random passerby about man god and after that he got turned into a donut and saved by some random girl
@@justsomegoosewithinterneta4199 the MC didn't tell him tho, he got ask and he just reacted, excited to get some answers and the next thing he knew, he became a donut
If this series had not been adapted into an anime, I never would have heard of it. Thank God that some written stories get noticed and picked up by the right companies so that they can come to life. The manga and the Light Novel and the anime are different from each other but this is one of my favorite series of all time. Glad I found it.
I couldn't have said it better, I blasted through the books and it might be my single favorite book series of all time. And the anime is a masterpiece to boot.
That title is spot-on, the scene where Rudeus had his reunion with his father really made me teary-eyed as well, because how relatable and heartbreaking it was.
I genuinely believe that if you can look past all the pedo crap, it's easily one of the best anime of all time, and that's despite the fact they still plan on releasing six more cours.
I tried to, but I just can't look past it and had to drop the show because of it. I understand the appeal of the show completely and I even recommend the show to my friends. I can see why a lot of people like it so much, and I don't blame them. It's just not for me.

When Scamboli makes two videos on a single show, you know it's good. He's only done that with Beastars. I think Mushoku Tensei is pretty tight. It treats itself like it has something to say and has actual respect for its world, system and characters, which immediately makes it surpass most other isekai. It's so enthralling that I watched it every week, I can't do that with anime. I can't even remember to water my plants and my dog every week, so that is saying something.
Learning to write reviews myself, went and saw your first video compared to your last two and wow. It's impressive how something as simple as a change of cadence or excitement in your voice has changed how the content feels. Love it a lot man. Keep going!!
That bgm hit me in the guts. It wasn't that long ago, but the nostalgic memories of Cascade, and Odyssey in general, are flooding back to me like that one time Rudeus did the funni rain thing.
Here's a fun fact the authors of Re:Zero and Mushou Tensei are both friends in real life and you'll see them tweeting to each other occasionally. I would say that it's highly likely that both have given each other inspiration for their series. It's also known that Re:Zero author is also friends with the Konosuba Author. It's quite amazing how small of a world it is. I guess isekai authors just gravitate towards each other like stand users.
that explains why i find the two shows similar somehow: both have MCs that actually still have the flaws they had before they were reincarnated, in contrast to pretty much everyother isekai in existence where they just ignore that the MCs flaws ever existed in the first place

@@Gundam-Prime Apparently, based on the way some people talk about anime and videogames on the internet. I've seen a lot of idiots try to argue that you're gay/trans if you create a female avatar in an RPG.

First anime I watched solely because of your recommendation. Lots of the good ones you've talked about, I've already seen (including the ones you don't like such as Eva). I'm going to start taking your recommendations more seriously from here on out. It's a great show. Thanks, Scamboli. :)
@@mikir1741 Season one was broken into two coures for both the maintenance of the project and quality. So part one aired and part 2 came back after a seasonal break.
The imperfect solutions he takes to problems is so real. Unlike other anime where the main protag can come up with a perfect plan (that is lowkey kinda dumb but still works) Rudy actually has to try and fail and try again to succeed which is so much nicer.
Lowkey dumb? This is a major reason why I dropped Tokyo Revengers. EVERY plan by Take-Bitchy was highkey retarded. And they all still work out flawlessly. As mentioned, this is a very bad trope (particularly in shounens), but damn if TR wasn't the most egregious example of this in recent memory for me.
Honestly I kind of like the fact that Rudy is disgusting, especially in the beginning. Like all these other isekais the protag is this weeb who's somehow like a perfect upstanding guy but also a weeb and a neet. And yeah Rudy being a piece of shit feels way more accurate and watching him slowly learn to not be a piece of shit is such good character development
@@norwa3518 clout diggers in a nutshell, they dont actually read EDIT : getting rid/toning down his perversion is also a point in the story, but people will always find ways to say it never happens (despite the obvious)
MC being a loser of some sort has almost become synonymous with Isekai even though there maybe other good transfer to another world stories where that isn't the case.
I absolutely love the way you do your title cards 0:33, they remind me of the Monogatari series! Keep up the good work man, I love your videos.. plus iv pretty much watched all your recommendations... so thanks!
Rudy was never a well adjusted adult. That's the entire point of the premise. And they play up his perversions so it hits even harder when Eris leaves. He's so devastated he becomes impotent.
I also enjoyed the fact that the opening theme song wasn't accompanied by a visual that stayed the same. It always helped set up the scene for the episode and it really gave me that fanticy adventure feel 10/10
I fucking loved that as well. It used that time to set the scene with simple visual storytelling. It just immersed me further rather than feeling like something taking away from the show after 4 or 5 episodes.
Just found your channel like last week, already watched a ton of your back catalog, just wanted to say you genuinely maybe the funniest guy making these type of videos on youtube.
Title is spot on man, I'm either screaming into my pillow in cringe, laughing my ass off or crying a river when watching this show. Oh, also feeling hyped as shit whenever something cool happens.
You're meaning to tell me there's an Isekai out there that actually reflects upon the MCs past life and doesn't use the genre as an easy way out to relate to the audience? That's some crazy shit right there.
@@steviejohnson378 everyone’s entitled to their own opinion, but when your opinion is poopoo stinky garbage, I’m afraid I’m gonna have to ask you to leave
And then you find out the web novel was the inspiration for most other isekai and you get sad. There is no better isekai in the pipeline, this was always the peak.
Agreed. People do seem to get confused though and consider Rudeus as a bad character just because he isn’t a good person. Which has nothing to do with how incredibly well thought out his character is or the actual quality of Rudy’s character. I don’t think Rudy’s flawed character works against the series as a whole in any way (as I’ve heard of many people dropping the series because of it), in fact I think it takes the series to a different level. The fact that the characters have flaws make them feel real or even human, which I think is rare in anime these days especially anime of this genre with bland protagonists made only for being projected upon by the viewer. Also seeing the journey of characters such as Rudeus, Paul and Eris develop is REALLY satisfying, especially when looking back at how they were before and comparing it to how far they’ve come now and evolved as characters. I don’t think I have to say any more Mushoku Tensei is anime of the year for me.
I remember after watching the birthday party episode I actually felt uncomfortable, if not disgusted. I quit watching for 3 or 4 weeks. I heard nothing but praise for the show, and in today's cancel culture, I thought how on Earth could it succeed? I ended up looking on forums to see peoples take on the show, and much to my relief, there were many who shared the same disgust that I had. After reading further however, many people who had read the novel and or manga explained it was about the redemption of Rudy, and that I should give it another shot. I decided then I would power through a couple more episodes to see if it got any better.... Now here I am, and I cannot drop the light novel. I finished the show, continued on in the manga, and when the manga ran out, I found where I was at in the story in the light novel and pressed on. This is by far one of the best stories I've ever read. While it is a character driven show, one aspect that cannot be ignored is the World building. It is top-tier. Another impressive point to me is the presence of time. Too often do we get Ash Ketchums in anime, but here we get to see Rudy go through all the different stages of life. There is not enough praise that I can give this story. At first, I thought it was just another isekai spinoff, and I am so glad to say that I was wrong. If the studio can continue to adapt the show to the light novel this well, I cannot wait for the next 5-7 years to come. This will be an all time great
My favorite thing about this series is how Rudeus develops. His perversion is a flaw of his throughout the entire series, but he learns to control it and he learns how his actions affect other people. Too many series just change their characters completely and call that development, but the characters in mushoku tensei always become better versions of themselves. This series really changed my life and I'm so happy to see that most people are understanding the good points of it instead of just being turned off by the obtuseness of the flaws and themes. I will admit there were quite a few moments where I questioned the author's sanity (always involving Aisha for some reason) but the anime has cut out the first of these weird moments and they aren't frequent enough to detract from everything this series has done for me. I appreciate the wonderful review and the wonderful memes in this video.
Why I find you almost on every mushoku tensei review video. Not saying I hate it,it's just that it makes me awe that how much you cares about mushoku tensei
@@Lonst_183 Hahaha. True. It is my favorite series that I haven't really been able to stop thinking about since I finished the novel about a year ago. Once the anime ended, it just stove my thirst for new content even further so I began looking at all the reviews online. Whether it be passion or obsession, Mushoku Tensei means a lot to me.
Just discovered and watched this show yesterday. Same exact takeaway: The show is disgusting, but also hilarious, I had a smile on my face for like 8 straight episodes.
That’s the reason I watch it. I’m tired of shows trying to beat me over the head with a holier than thou moral lesson. I want to watch a scumbags life choices
Apart from the pervy stuff Rudeus does, I thought the beginning of the show was too moe and cutesy for my taste. It was kinda like whiplash. From cutesy to pervy, sometimes more than once in a single episode. It didn't sit right with me. I only started really liking it when Rudeus began to develop as a character, becoming less of a deviant, restraining himself, and retraining his moral compass from south to north, if that makes sense.
This first season has also barely touched the depth thats coming later on in the Light Novels. I can't wait for the years of Mushoku Tensei seasons that are coming.
Mushoku Tensei is pretty much one of my favourite LN series. I read through it with patience, wanting to see what's gonna happen in the next pages. I was entranced by the actual depth of the World, the Characters that still were living while Rudeus wasn't looking, the Systems and Rules that bound Magic and Fighting styles.... But the one that made me love this story even more was Rudeus. Because I loved hating him when he was being a creep, I loved how he warmed up to this new chance at life and strived to be better than his worthless old self, his struggles when his plans just didn't go right, his relationships with the Natives of this World (both good and bad). And more importantly, I loved seeing him becoming a better person. There are people out there that are at the bottom of the Abyss, that sunk so low they can't go any deeper. Rudeus shows at the start a repulsive, disgusting individual, a literal man-child that never grew up past his teenage years as he simply shut himself away from the rest of the world, being thrusted into a different one with its own culture, monsters and Magic. But the thing is, while he is now an inhabitant of said world, that doesn't mean that he changes in 5 minutes. It is more of a gradual improvement, a slow burn that will melt his flaws while he still has to use his own determination to build the path he wants to walk on in his new life. Okay, now that I finished rambling about the story, I'm gonna say "THANK YOU STUDIO BIND!" It's pretty much thanks to the creation of this studio that we got such an amazing Anime adaptation. Frankly, it's really what it deserved. Not even talking about the Music (5 + 1 Remix of the first one and 2 EDs all for 1 season... And 1 ED for Rudy) and the Fight scenes! Yeah. I love it.
5:03 "He does these discord like things" 💀 Nah but I started watching this this after the vid you did on it earlier in the year and it's great. Am caught up on the manga now too, wondering whether to start the novel, rip
I saw this video ages ago, I finally had time to watch the anime. I really enjoyed it! I would never have touched it without this recommendation. Thank you 😊
Best show I’ve ever watched actually. I love Rudeus and I love how you focused on the characters because all I’ve ever heard from anyone was just how immersive Mushoku Tensei is (don’t get me wrong though it is)
eh... i still regard grimgar as my most favorite and leagues above everything that isnt youjo senki(second place) all because the light novels slap(until volume 10, im still midway through it but its taking a bit of a nose dive). People are legitimately using the redo of healer defense of "hEs A flAwEd peRSoN" in regards to mushoku tensei but i dont understand how he has to be a pedo and other characters have to be pedo's to better the story(Also if the MAIN CHARACTER only gets better after like a hundred chapters then thats not good writing, thats what you call hamfisting themes that dont go well with your story). Grimgar's themes lend itself well to the world around them in contrast.
@@poggers4392 uhh no it's not an excuse when characters gets better "after 100 chapters" when it's meant to be written that way. Mushoku Tensei handles growth in a way that a normal story wouldn't normally: realistically. And also, he doesn't get better after 100 chapters. He slowly changes into something better over the course of said chapters. Just take a look at Eris's whole character arc in the anime and see what i mean. Heck, Rudy's change is also a great example of what i mean even though we haven't scratched the surface of his change
@@poggers4392 I think you are missing the point here the character development here change in a way that is like taking 2 step forward and one step back and it doesn’t even written as obvious like that ,everything is subtle ,the change doesn’t just happen in a snap it from the culminating of experience that make the character developed that why it intriguing cause it developed slowly and humanly, ( your not gonna be a alcoholic or drug user and just be a completely different person the next day)
I’m entirely caught up on the Light novel and am currently reading the web novel to get ahead and I must say. It’s easily my favorite Light novel series. Rudeus is a very real character and so are many of the others and it makes me happy that this story is getting more widespread. It also makes me happy to see that the adaptation is doing the light novel justice and then some. One of my biggest issues with the LN is that the fights were lack luster but the anime is doing them really well and the animation is amazing. I can’t wait for the next arc specifically as well since it’s full of character development from rudeus.
@@EsquilaxM I may not have gotten to any great ones yet. The most in-depth one so far was probably with the demon king chick that he shocks and paralyzes and the north sword dude that set fire to the woods when Rudy was trying to get back home. I gave up reading the web novel after he read the diary because the engrish is too annoying to read. I’m sure the fights get better but so far it’s mostly just him using one spell or not using a spell for some reason. It feels like he narrates the fights in his head and doesn’t actually do much in them when it’s a main fight. Feels like he’s standing around. And they lack detail. I’m sure it gets better when he actually starts fighting people on his level, he will be forced to get better, but right now it’s meh.
The entire point of the premise is that Rudy was never a well adjusted adult even in his previous life. His physical growth mirrors his mental growth, and the gap between the two creates the conflict.
@@chikipichi5280 thats the point? Rudeus is flawed, he doesnt start off a perfect being, hes still influenced by his old life experiences (even he gets grossed out by his own thoughts which forces him back a little), he moves on and learns to grow past that behaviour, which again, is the point people like King and maybe even you...are so stuck on that beginning you dont even see where it goes, just : ewww pervert
@@johncarver357 Another point to add is that when Rudy does end up marrying and falling in love with a girl, it should be perfectly acceptable for him to be horny sometimes. If its real love, why should we stop them? Let couples have their fun.
damn you said everything I wanted to say!! I just want to say, every video you've put out the past year seems like a masterclass in description and critique for shit I've either watched or wanna watch. the s-tier humor and insight you breath into each of your reviews is the sort of thing I aspire to be able to say whenever I want to convince a friend to consume a thing I thoroughly enjoyed. keep it up bro, really glad you're still around
Your best video yet. I wish I showed my cousin this video when I was trying to get him into this anime. I have a story in mind that's similar but about a completely different type of world and character and I hope that it works out well since I am not an actual writer.
Finally someone who understands that Rudy is an EXTREMELY FLAWED person (not character) that is slowly changing himself for the better and knowing that changing who you were before doesn't just happen overnight. And also someone who doesn't self insert (in this show) The red flags in the series are pretty disturbing so if you don't like it, then it's probably better for you to drop this show.
Yeah. Seems like a lot of people think the dude is either always justified in his actions or is the literal spawn of satan… I side more with the latter
Pretty sure everyone understands that though, no one claims that he's some kind of saint since he keeps doing this pervy shit, and it's quite obvious that he's improving himself.
I absolutely love the relationship between Rudeus and Eris, the slow but steadily increasing amount of respect that is built up for one another really drives their relationship home. But I am very stoked to see how the relationship between Rudeus and Sylphie in the future.
I honestly really want to hear your thoughts on Clannad and Clannad afterstory and i hope you make a video on it one day. Your way of looking at things really clicks with me, good job man!
Almost every isekai protag seems to have no discernible character prior to changing worlds which is why tensei’s large focus on Rudy’s previous life makes it so much more engaging and fun to root for him when he overcomes past traumas and character flaws.
Your first video on Mushoku Tensei made me watch it and fall in love, thank you Scam. If Rudy wasn't always out looking for cupcakes, it would be my favorite anime of all time because of how much character growth is in this show.
More anime should go out of their way to create main characters that are actually interesting to follow but are clearly very flawed individuals. It is a shame that most of what we get every year, even with great shows, tend to play it very safe with the way they build their characters so that you either project onto them or empathize with them overtly instead of recognizing said "character" as someone completely "not" you.
You nailed it when saying the show is about Redemption and Growing. The problem I see with people who refuse to watch the show because of Rudius is that they want him to instantly be a better person, that is not how it works. People need time and hard work to change. That is why most people never do. I love how it take Rudius a long time to change a lot of his bad habits, and some may never truly go away fully. The lesson is everyone can change, but its not instantaneous.
I feel the same way. I've read the LN and it was great. Almost dropped it during volume 2 but it quickly became my favorite LN after the Magic University Arc.
This show has some of the highest ups and the lowest downs, in the best ways possible. It feels so real and vividly engaging that I just always need more. Even though Rudy fucks up and loses his way, he’s still improving and I love that.
This has been my favorite show for the last year or so, whenever the first season aired. It’s so good. And I really appreciate how you talked about Rudy being a piece of shit but hoping for redemption, I feel like too many people can’t look past it and they’re missing out on a lot of really good content and character development
This is one of the best adaptations I've ever seen as much passion as David Production put into JoJo's is what I'd compare it too the way they keep true to the source material and even enhance it and especially keep the vibe of what it's really all about when put into an animation format 💯
My jaw has never dropped, I've never been left speechless and I've never been on the edge of my seat. Orsteds appearance was an experience, not only did my jaw drop, but I was left speechless and on the edge of my seat. I *_felt_* the fear and I've never seen anything like it. The only thing I can compare it to is the reveal of the colossal/armoured titan and the choice between Armin or Erwin.
Honestly Mushoku Tensei is one of those shows that feels so, so rewarding to just stick through despite Rudy’s gross-ass moments. I know plenty of people who quit the show reeaal fast, but it’s their loss. They didn’t get to see Rudy get, spoiler, the absolute shit beat out of him and all that :’)
The show became amazing for me when I remembered I was watching characters with major issues, not role models or self inserts. I can't put myself in Rudy's head or envy him because his flaws are too much but I enjoy watching him grow as much as those live action dramas with bad people and great character development.
Truly the best and golden Isekai anime ever. Don't know how to say it but thanks goodness someone found Mushoku Tensei then adapted it into an anime, and i swear the author would lived a life in another world so he/she could make such a great masterpiece like this. Bravo Mushoku Tensei 2012/11 !
