Hi Rhet, saw this just after taking delvery of mine. Initially I considered the standard model without chest pad and rails, but glad I bought the full kit. Small premium is worth it IMO. Not shot with it in anger yet, but feel it's adding a very useful point of stability when not rigging on a gimbal, monopod, or shoulder assembly. Prior to this I had considered stabilisation against chest with a V-mount, but this is better. Why? Little extra weight, camera located further out from chest, pad more comfy as less inclined to slip vs a V-mount. At a push can be used against shoulder front or off-centred chest. Also, if using rails (9" carbon work well for me with V-mount, follow focus and matte box) then extending rails back slightly (I bought 12" carbon) allows similarly chest point of contact with a slightly larger set-up. Additionally a V-mount plate on rails can easily be loosened (2 thumb screws etc) and slid backwards to permit folding out/in camera flip screen. All in all it just adds to the rigging options and versatility. Power options too is another benefit you touch on. I already had a SmallRig MPF mount plate several MPF cells and a power bank. It's relatively straightforward to attach any of these if needing some extra camera runtime. That also adds further rigging options - possibly for a locked off B-cam where you wish to minimise weight and heft? However, standardisation on just say V-mount powering adds greater utility and convenience IMO. But 'each to their own'. It's about having options and this kit facilitates several, so I have zero regrets in buying.
I’m glad you’re getting good use out of it! I do think it’s fine to use occasionally but just as Austin I appreciate and use the chest pad a lot. I’d be curious which parts you’re using exactly to get a rails set up onto this rig, so definitely feel free to share the parts used! I’ll definitely be taking this on to projects that require a lot of handheld and I love handheld so this was a no-brainer for me
This is an interesting product, as I sometimes want to reduce my camera package. Can the knob to lock the rotation be replaced the a ratcheting lever style knob? It looks like the knob may be a bit small. Are ther pe 1/4-20 or 3/8” threaded holes on the bottom to mount a quick release plate?
Hey super the schoulderpad I was looking for a while for a stuff like that!!!great video and topic. I have a bunch of NP 980 battery because of the BMPCC4K I have...usually the Pana S5 org,GH5 5s with the new battery has enough energy...but for fun and gun probably Vmount battery is better because it is heavier...
"A decent little chestpad....it's not the softest thing in the world, it's firm, it's nice, it's not bad, it's really actually good but it's not like super premium." Could've just said "A decent little chestpad" haha
I think it was decent wording… it’s not the best wording in the world, it’s verbose, it’s nice, it’s not bad, it’s really actually good but it’s not like super succinct
How well does the lock on the v mount secure the battery? I feel that once my battery is locked in, if I wiggle the battery, it tends to slip out. Does this happen to yours?
I like this a lot! However, I use a lot of standard sized v- mount batteries and don't see the need to purchase more batteries! Do you think this will work with the larger batteries? I know the chest mount option won't work with a larger battery. BTW, great video and great timing. I was looking at this thing on the Smallrig website just the other day!
That’s a really good question. It certainly seems like with my battery there is room to spare but not a HUGE amount. Could be worth emailing smallrig for the comparability
On the SWIT-S140 battery does not fit on this product..it does not lock completely and falls off 😠..isn't it a standard for all?..forces me to buy batteries from SmallRig?..NOT normal.
I would maybe talk to them, I used an Andycine battery for this video. There’s also a small adapter piece on the V part of the V mount that needs to be removed first.
@@RhettThompsonFilmThat V-piece can't be mounted on the SWIT battery because it has different holes.. I ordered the MD2801B product from SmallRig specifically for the V-plate but it still doesn't work🤦♂️
@@-Ninel- holes? There aren’t any holes involved here. It just slides into the top and locks in. The smallrig had a piece that needs to be removed and not used.
I know, I also tried with the part that comes in the package, but it doesn't work...the sliding is done but not correctly and it simply doesn't lock completely and at the slightest movement of the battery, it jumps and falls.
@@-Ninel- hmm curious. I’d reach out to both companies and see what they say. Every battery I’ve used worked so far but this is made only for compact stuff maybe the battery is simply to large?
