this fight is just so hype right from the get go, they really did it justice, a fight of this magnitude deserves proper treatment :) Lee dropping his weights a legendary moment in anime :D I always loved Gaara he is just so cool and ruthless, love how he just stands still and doesnt care all badass looking :D Lee's story both gets you in the feels and inspires you, him and Gai sensei are a brilliant duo :) here Lee won everyone's heart what an amazing performance! he truly gave it his all and earned the respect despite losing :) the way he stands up even after being knocked out always hits :)

I'm going on 33 and I've seen this fight dozens of times but I always tear up knowing how Lee is the peoples character. He's the most relatable character in the series. No powers, just hard work and effort. When they took him from us, it just makes it more tragic.

You mentioned rock lee having callouses all over his body - more than that honestly. What lee is doing with the log kicks is called bone conditioning. It does 3 things - dulls the nerve endings so you can kick harder without feeling pain, it physically migrates muscle away from the bone "blade" aka the part you make contact with, and over time you get microfractures that heal and microfracture and heal over and over again - because the protein that heals broken bones is actually harder than bone itself, so you're making your bones physically more dense over time. It's a real life technique called "iron shirt"

Lee can only open 5 Gates. Each gate makes you much stronger but takes a major toll on his body. Using the Primary Lotus tore his muscles, each gate puts him through more and more pain to use. Only if he opens all 8 gates will he die. (Lee can only forcibly open 5 of the 8 right now)

This show doesn't develop every character, but it does develop a lot of characters, even those that you wouldn't expect to be developed - to the extent that the world feels large. It's not just the hero & his entourage. You picked two great characters, to show an interest in. I assure you that you won't be disappointed. There are good things in store, over time. Naruto as a series is both exhausting and invigorating. You have stressful battles, like this, but you also have amazing emotional highs too. The battle, regardless of how it turned out, was amazing. Also, you know by now, that another thing Naruto does great is consistently upping the ante. Whenever you're on a journey, your mind can get stuck in the present. Sometimes, it's useful to look back, and see how far you've come. You can be climbing a mountain for a long time, and feel like your progress is slow, until you look down and try to see where you started from. When you first started the show, could you have imagined reaching this point, seeing Gaara and Lee face off together? There have many interesting characters along the way. You have Naruto's old teacher, Iruka. You have Kakashi, Zabuza and Haku. You have all the other leaf teams, and the team from the Sand Village. It has been quite a journey, hasn't. You still have only scratched the surface. :) Happy Journeys.

Id say my favorite part is when he looks at neji and says in his mind, "I was saving this for you but I'll show you anyway"! The ost that proceeded that and the animation was top tier!!!!

this episode was so iconic. talent vs a demon. the ankle weights falling is so good. and it built up so much because we saw 5/8 of a killer move, so we all knew one day we'd see the full potential of it and this was just the warm up.

lee is one of the best examples of why i love martial arts way more than powers in anime/fanfics. just pure skill and power from extreme training. but sadly fanfics tend to never go this route and the few that do either have the mc make basically no progress even after months of training or ends up becoming so overpowered in a short time which is bs.

I love Lee! I remember watching this for the 1st time. Back when Lee kicked Saske and Naruto's butts I thought it was just reusing and old concept of how a powerful new character would show everyone up for his introduction. But after seeing this I went back and watched that episode because I actually enjoyed it then watching Lee get his moment. This also had a suprise moral to it. I was hoping Lee would win and the moral would be that hard work always pays off. But instead the moral is that being too obsessed with winning is a bad thing. As Kakashi breifly implied Lee was using a technique that risked his life just for the sake of winning.

Two side-characters who at first glance seemed like comedic relief, but kishimoto had different plans. how they build Lee's and Gai's backstory while we see the fight unfold. Many have attempted to execute similar story telling, but they have all fallen short. This here is in a class of it's own, and both Lee and Gai stole everyone's hearts just like that.

You have no idea how absolutely HYPE it was to watch this as a teenager growing up. Gaara was a vessel for a literal demon with various curses he was born with and power he inherited. Rock Lee had nothing but working out and effort. Lee still went "fuck it, we ball" and gave Gaara all the hands. Rock Lee is one of the single most badass characters in the series, alongside Shikamaru (who never lost a single fight, he would still get his opponent to a stalemate and result in a draw). Also, not to spoil anything but you will love what Choji does in Shippuden.

Just to let you know, Kakashi said if one open ALL of the 8 gates it’s a guaranteed death, that’s why the 8th gate is called the gate of death. Opening 5 gates won’t kill you, but it puts your body under massive pain.
