Wow, it made me cry too. You immediately see the convicts get silent when they hear his lyrics. I'm sure they never forgot this day. Being an excon myself, I can totally understand how they felt in there, especially on Thanksgiving. God bless BB King and his band for reaching out to lost souls like that.
Jesus Christ said " When I was in prison you visited me". Musicians oftentimes are more successful at reaching and touching people than preachers and the church can for free. No "Miracle offering" needed! Thanks again Dave.👍
Thought about this video the other day. Kept having the words "someone out there loves you" repeating in my head. I swear, nothing has ever sounded so comforting to know that truly, no matter who you are, "someone (out there in the world) really cares."
Wow what a magnificent performance that was! B.B.King was one of the greatest blues singer/musician ever. How fortunate that was for you and those men. I'm sure they were thrilled to see him. I don't hear of musicians visiting prisons these days. Frank Sinatra, Johnny Cash, B.B.King, Jerry Garcia and the Sex Pistols all took their music to prison to lift the spirits of those confined. Thanks for bringing B.B. to them and now to us.
Absolutely incredible. You can see the depth of emotion and feeling in the faces of both King and the people watching, entranced by this almost mystical performance. Thank you for this, David
One of Mississippi’s great contributions to Western Civilization. No one had the touch like Riley King from Indianola, MS. Thank you Mr. Hoffman for documenting the master at work.
David, I'm from Indianola, Mississippi, where BB was from. For years, starting around 1979, he would come back to his home town to do a free concert in the park. My father was his doctor when he would come back into town. That weekend in early June was our 'Indianola Festival', so to speak. We cherished it. I filmed a few of them, and watched as he got older, and less able to stand and do long-form convcerts anymore. He would give a kids' dance contest on stage, as they were his prize reasons for doing what he did. He passed in 2015 in Vegas just before his show back home in Indianola. They brought his casket Home to streets lined up with so many souls of all kind. I was lucky to have gotten my first 4K DSLR and stabilizer, so I filmed everything. It was beautiful to see, but so sad to see an end to an era this place will never see again. And the population has dropped so much over the decades. We have since moved to the mountains of North Carolina, but will never forget those priceless days down there.
I found your channel about five years ago when searching for clips of B.B. King performances. You certainly deserve the highest accolades for making this concert happen. I was fortunate to see B.B. perform at three small NYC venues in the early 70’s. His music is a life changing experience. ~ Thanks for sharing this.
David, you made a piece of history with BB that time, and save it for the future generations, like me, 20yo, and may be one day for my children. Your footages are priceless, thanks, just thanks
This is what happens with selflessness and humility intersect you find wonderful moments like this in your life and I can't help but think thank you Mr. King I appreciate you

Love BB King I saw him live with a fantastic harmonica player in the mid 80's in an auditorium of a local Returned Services League (RSL)club in Sydney. It was an intimate show would of been lucky to have had 500 people attend it was the best entertainment and music I had ever heard. I'll never forget it, I was invited along and had never heard blues live He blew my mind he was funny, talkative, engaging generous and came across as a gentle and kind man . Very endearing. I'll never forget his playing "there ain't nobody here but us chickens," he had the audience in the palm of his hand .
Thank you so much for your contribution on this planet for a moment those souls felt love. As an artist this makes me want to re evaluate how I use my voice. Am I touching another with my craft and let them know that someone cares.🧡🧡
Idk *how* or what it is. BB kings beautiful voice working perfectly well in that hard environment as much as it would at a more traditional venue. But the faces, BB king, guards , inmates, all of them, in every single face there , you can see something different in each of the eyes you filmed. I know they usually put people in prison for good reasons but this is so idk, eerily powerful to watch especially from the place the world is today. You did an amazing thing for the most potentially volatile mix of broken, hurt and dark souls. 🎭
Wow, David you always take me there with you....😪 I feel so privileged that you shared such a beautiful experience with us. Thank you I am grateful, even though you made me cry...your films make me so emotional. ❤
You really brought out the humanity of those men - and BB King's performance here was truly something uniquely intense and real - you could tell he really felt for those guys. A seminal moment in live concert recordings.
On a website where game walkthroughs and makeup tutorials generate millions of subscribers, someone who has recorded history, and by virtue of what you've witnessed, actually *are* living history... well, you deserve many, many more.
David is there anywhere we can watch the whole performance? And have you ever considered getting it restored to a HD standard/4k? I mean, I'd imagine a lot out there would love to see this in full in HD.
Thank you for asking Bryan. I have made a high-quality DVD but not yet converted to 4k. here is where you can get it - www.amazon.com/dp/B00061U15C David Hoffman - filmmaker
how young most of them were...almost all some kind of ethnic/racial minority...it makes me sad to think how little have changed. but what a truly lovely moment... one of a kind
