I bought this vintage bike for just 10 euros, it had been abandoned for decades. The owner wasn't sure it was worth restoring, but this bike had a few surprises up its sleeve!

I was shouting at my monitor that it was a Mercier 100 right up until you found the pink paint and confirmed it! I'd recognize those crowns anywhere :)

The head lugs with the "W" shaped cut-outs are very typical of Mercier. I don't know of other French brands that used the same or similar lugs. What is the diameter of the seat post? That can tell you the thickness of the seat post tubing, which would give you a good hint as to the type and quality of tubing. My guess is that this was a mid-level Mercier.

@@thevelocollective343 I just found a 1975-79 Columbus SL but a French built one , says Jose Catieu Cycles on the head badge from his own cycle shop near Lyon in southern France , very rare bike now on a rebuild !

My 1970 mercier 100/200 has the same head lugs. The 100/200 have chrome and the ends of the fork and chain stays near the dropouts. Those cranks might indicate it is a 300 which is a cromo frame.

The whole time I was thinking it was a 1975 Gitane (nearly all the components are identical) UNTIL I saw the rose paint....yep, a Mercier and most likely stolen, which is probably why it was repainted to cover up that beautiful and unique colour.

Yes, sad that such a lovely frame was repainted. I just don't get it.

Very interesting. This fellow can help you zero in on the brand if it is a French bike. youtube.com/@VintageBike All the best.

Proper nice job you have done there! Discovered your channel today and has been a pleasure following it. I just have a quick question in regard of the first song track of this video, the one played with the piano. I don't seem to be able to find it when I look up for "Graystar - Wherever you go". Any suggestions? Thanks a lot!

That song was never released, it was a demo. I'll see if I can put it online and let you know if I do. Sorry for the late reply. Cheers!

Definitely high end lugset, and braze ons, shallow fork rake, pretty nice frame...l,m thinking probably not peugeot or gitane, as you mentioned likely mercier, bertin or le jeune, although it looks like the aluminum id plate on the bottom bracket was removed which would indicate peugeot.. So who knows, best bet is to try gently wiping denatured alcohol, then water immediately after, where the head badge was and see if any decals reveal themselves, anywhere on the frame tubes actually. Looks like likely sprayed over. Could be a garin as well. A nice mystery bicycle however. Enjoy. Shes a beauty. ✌️❤️😁

Didn’t get to see the crank spindle bearing race check. Those are frequently pitted and spalled

Maybe the bike was painted like that because it was probably stolen.

Don't think so. It was bought in the middle of the French countryside from a farmer, who'd had it in his family for years.
