Just wanted to take a minute to say thank you. you’re one of the guys that have kept me sane for the past year while recovering. I should be restoring my family owned 68 GTO that my dad bought brand new in 69. But when being diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2012 wasn’t enough to stop me I got paralyzed in 2019 from the neck down. Let me tell you that’ll put the kibosh on your car tinkering. I had to start all over….. and learn how to walk and feed myself and do basically everything people do every day. It’s been a long hard struggle but I’ve gotten everything back with the exception of my hands…my left hand wont open all the way and the right won’t close all the way. I just wanted to say thank you for being one of the guys I watch regularly while struggling to get back out there and “get my goat” back on the road thank you and keep up the good work.

I'm a huge K5 fan and now Dennis has had 2 of the slickest examples I've ever seen!

My Grandfather had one very similar to this one that we rode to the lake place in for many years. It had the small wheel and tire combo you mentioned. Certain roads during the trip she would buck up and down for miles. He held on to it till the body rusted away thanks to the Minnesota winters. Love this example you now own! Brings back a TON of memories !! My parents bought a new '81 K5 Blazer when I was a kid (the purchase was heavily influenced by 10-year-old me), the paint was two-tone silver/black with a red pinstripe. It had grey interior (much nicer than red), factory tape-deck, cruise -- and the anemic 305 with "Electronic Spark Control." Removing the cats really woke it up! My dad had the dealer swap-out the tiny stock radial tires for some oversized Goodyear Wrangler R/T's... they looked very similar to the BFG's on this '78. It was my mom's daily driver and or vacation vehicle -- loaded up, we had me, and my two younger brothers in the back seat, windsurfer on the roof-rack, my 80cc Suzuki on the rear bumper-rack, our BMX bikes on the front bumper-rack, and towing a trailer with my dad's Catamaran on it! We sold it in 1988 and bought a new '88 Cherokee Limited XJ (charcoal grey w/ leather). The Cherokee was really nice, but I miss the Blazer much more!

Correct me if I am wrong but those door mirrors did not come out till 1980, in 1978 they had the 3 bar style mirrors on the doors.

i love these style blazers. my uncle had one for along time. bought it new. and took care of it and babied it. and in about 2000. he sold it when he retired. it was a sad day. the whole family knew how much he loved that truck. but when he sold it. he got a nice payday cause of how nice condition it was in. still like new after having it for about 15 years or so

Freaking AWESOME truck! I bought a ‘99 Yukon from Sewell (last year of the square body style). It was 4x4, 4 door, platinum silver (basically the same as the silver on this ‘78), tan leather interior and loaded. I had Sewell add the black fender flairs and skid plates. Yes, it had high miles (120k when. we sold it), but I’m anal about my vehicles and it was ALWAYS serviced, always 9n Michelin’s, and I had a binder with all that paperwork, from window sticker to every receipt for all the maintenance.

My Uncle had a Black K5 very similar to this. Memory lane to see this. On this one the black vinyl looks great and also easy to undo. Smart move. You all have a good Christmas.

My first vehicle in 1982, when I was 16, was a 1978 Blazer all black, loved that truck!

I had a 1979 K-5 Blazer with a 400 small block and every option available, it had two pages to the window sticker! AWD with a transfer case! Wish that I had it back, I sold it to my mechanic when I moved out of Washington state over twenty years ago. I've only seen one in Hemmings in the last five years, they are rare trucks!

Hey Dennis. I see you found another of Minnesota’s hidden treasures. First y’all scored that sweet Boss 9. Now this! I frequent the French Lake Auto Recyclers as it’s close to our lake house. Can’t overlook the Windy Hill salvage yard . Both are amazing. With this pandemic thing, I have time on my hands. If I can help you out in any way. I’d be more than happy to assist. Seeing that K-5 makes me wish I had my Frost White 86 Blazer with the factory forged aluminum wheel upgrade. For the longest time I was the only one around with those wheels. All others had Rally rims. I like yours easy better though with the Black and Silver. Could’ve used that motor too. My 305 only had 165 hp. Then I discovered Jeep’s! I have 2 now and have hade a half dozen of them. I know you’re a wrangler kind of man. Don’t judge too harshly as I really love my XJ’s!! So fun! Thanks for tolerating my rambling on. That's one super nice K5 Blazer. My 78 was a rubber floor mat, radio delete, three on the tree plain as you could get it truck. But it was an off road beast and off road it went! I didn't worry about scratching that high mile truck. Winchester Gray was a color option from Dodge in 1970. It's beautiful.

Dennis I believe that your stereo in the Blazer is a Jc Whitney. They had a kit that could run 2 different stereos so the nice one could stay hidden and for those who were unaware, they could use the factory. My dad did one on his 76 Chevette, which was the first one in Kansas City. For some reason my dad leased it for 3 years and didn't want to do anything that would cost him at the end of the deal. Love the Silver and black that you have on it. Reminds me of of an Indy pace car colors. Excellent score and the Jeep is coming along bad ass.

I recommend you add the cream to the cup before adding the coffee and you will not have to use the coffee stir

That 400 small block is one tough engine, let me tell you. I remember a friend bought a brand new GMC van back in 1978 with a 400 small block, boy did he beat the shit out of it, never failed.

This truck is beautiful. Miss my 79 K5.....bought for 5k with 20k miles in 81 when I was 18. White with red interior Thought I was living large. Unlike this truck, I drove the hell out of mine, everywhere from ski trips to Colorado, Wyoming, Michigan, from Cincy , to spring breaks in Florida. Put over 200k miles on it with 1 rebuild.. A lot of fun. Nice vid !

Dennis I remember when these were brand new! I really liked them but I had to have a Gold Edition T Top Trans AM! I kept that one till the mid 90's! When I sold it it was almost perfect with only 32K miles! I have had a lot of muscle cars & some that were faster than the TA but man it was a cool car for a young man! My daughter was a little kid then & called the Trans Am "Our Race Car"!

We used 400 small blocks to build sprint car engines back in the early 80's. Great engines.

I went to a salvage yard a year ago looking for some parts for a 86 Chevy short bed, there was a 79 GMC Jimmy in perfect condition that somebody scrapped and the title was sent in as salvage. it made me sick to my stomach. I'm glad someone understood the value of that Blazer to call you

Had a 76 GMC Jimmy with the 400. Great trucks.

6:52: That grille isn't original, that's one of those LMC replacements without the bowtie. 7:38: Scottsdale trim was not the base "model" (trim), the Custom Deluxe was. 8:00: Actually, the small block 400s were somewhat common in the 78, 79, and 80 utilities because Chevy was discontinuing the engine and wanted to use up the castings they had.
