Tool is like a glass of cold water after you've been lost in the desert. Also, "Right in Two" is the next Tool song you MUST hear. Very deep lyrics and one of my personal favorites.
I completely agree, I saw them in 97 and again last year. The show last year was a religious experience. Can't wait till I see them again. I hope it's not another 25 years.
I saw them in 2019 and just tonight bought tickets to their current tour so going to see them for the second time now. Amazing doesn’t cut it. A truly spiritual experience for sure.
This is why I love your music reactions the most, because you "feel" the music more than anyone else I watched. Seeming like you needed a cigarette and an aftercare cuddle at the end of the song was a great example 😂🥰
When we watch your videos, even though we have heard the song a million times, we are living vicariously through you and your reaction. Always love sent.
First time I heard 'Vicarious' by Tool, I was in shock! The first time I saw them play 'Vicarious' in concert, I was literally like... "What the hell???" 😲 When the breakdown came in w/ the drums and bass, a huge muscular fella wearing a Mexican wrestling mask came on stage wearing a tutu and started twirling around like a ballerina to the rhythm of the song 🤣 One of those moments I went, "Did I just see that?"
Great video! I think overwhelming is a great way to describe the feeling from so many tool songs. Also it was great that you said "it feels like he's teaching a lesson through trauma" right before the lyrics become nihilistic life lessons. You called it lmao
Just happen to run across you reviewing excellent music. You're very intelligent description of music is delightful. As a man that enjoyed this music as a teenager I love seeing people discovering it. Well done girl keep it up. ❤
My roots in music go back to prog rock in the 70s. Rush, King Crimson and Pink Floyd my main 3. Tool is the only band that satisfied what all 3 of those bands brought for me. Great songwriting and musicianship on a different level
Yes 🙌 Do Eulogy next!!! Bottom also, undertow album has great bass lines (Paul) and they where angry, young, leads to more dark and aggressive album. The patient is another underrated track, I really think you would like that one, another one about his mom and written from her point of view.
Eulogy is in my top 5 as is Aenima. People say spiral out. I say learn to swim and see you Arizona Bay. Crawl Away is another one. I love younger Tool, not taking away from older Tool.
Tool is life. Heard them around 20 years ago at a friend. Didn't understand. Seen them live 25 years ago on a festival. Didn't understand a bit. Fell in love with them later. I felt like I understood now. Seen them live again couple years ago. The realization that I still didn't understand them was.. breathtaking. It blew me away, again. They're just too darn good.
It's like a cycle of revelations. Just when you think you've gotten a grasp on what to expect they just hit you outta left field with more amazing stuff. There's genuinely no other band like these guys, and it's a beautiful thing
@@garri5108 Ah yes, the good old "the thing I like more is better and if you don't like it you suck"-argument. Well played. I enjoy Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd et al, but Tool just does it more for me. They do blow me away a lot more. And I got 4 or 5 albums that I regularly listen to from tool, so.. yeah, I enjoy them more. Glad you enjoy 70s prog more, good for you.
@@waschkarte3989 Pink Floyd is overrated just as Tool. Listen to Genesis Selling England or Foxtrot album, listen to Yes Close To The Edge album, Mike Oldfiled's Ommadawn or Tubular Bells for Christ sake. No, It's not matter of taste. Objectively Tool is weaker by any measure than thousands of prog rock bands, at the same time Tool fans who too lazy to listen other music threat this band like they are some geniuses from other planet. Drummer is good, don't get me wrong, but he is not that genius as everyone says. Phil Collin washing him at any prog Genesis song, and I'm not talking about technical aspect, but about musical richness in drum part choices. Or listen To Tigran Hamasyan, I know it's fusion-jazz-djent, but if you want really crazy time signatures and song structure than it's way to go. No offence but it's really sad when people don't want to listen far more rich, interesting and talented music, obsessing over one band they thought was amazing a hundred years ago and ignorance keeps them from opening their eyes on the world of music.
@@garri5108 Yk I can agree that there is more technically good and complex prog out there, but once it gets too technical it loses its soul and passion and becomes a snoozefest. For example the Close to the Edge album. Musically its amazing but I'm bored with it. Never bored with Tool. Prog isn't my main thing, which is why I love PF and Tool but not Yes or Genesis. I think its the same for other people. And Danny is the most amazing alt metal / prog metal drummer to my taste, yet to find someone match the intensity on songs like Pneuma.
This was the third Tool song in Guitar Hero that was part of my first exposure to Tool, so it has some extra meaning to me. That opening section on guitar was so tricky for me. You've been doing a wide variety of things lately, good to see something I'm familiar with. I saw on your Twitch VOD yesterday that you did another Periphery song, Everything is Fine! But the audio got muted 😠I've accepted that we won't see your whole Periphery journey, but would you consider doing Reptile on RU-vid? It's a legendary 17 minute song that might push Periphery into your favorites.
Tool is something else... A different Level of Consciousness. It's not just music. It is Magick / Kabbalah, Sacred Science, and Mathematics! Oh, and a HUGE magnifying glass and mirror at the human race!
15:22 Aye, I love the way he does that, like it starts to pick up and like it’s leading somewhere; anticipation. Tension and release is absolutely fundamental to music, setup and payoff kinda thing. You’ll find it a lot throughout prog music, but really… any music you enjoy, you’ll still find elements of that to varying degrees. These guys have it on a stratospheric level 🥵
Welcome back to greatness! So happy you did this one. The patterns on your blouse are very similar to the album cover, it must have been meant to be today 😊 Love the reaction!❤
TOOL can't be compared with other bands, thats for sure! One of the most talented bands ever!!! I would like to draw attention to the band Nevermore! It's a very underrated progressive Metal band with one of the best guitarists of the world (Jeff Loomis, who also did most of the lyrics and plays now with Arch Enemy since Nevermore split up) and an amazing singer (Warrel Dane who sadly died a few years ago)! Composition,lyrics,musicianship,storytelling...all outstandingly good. I'm sure you as a music lover would totaly enjoy it! I'm almost 50 now and a metalhead since I was 12,so I know what I'm talking about when it comes to metal! And Nevermore are one of the best bands I have ever heared! I would love to see you giving them a try, even if it's not the most known band out there! But their nickname 'the best band you've never heared from' comes not from nothing!Cause thats always what people say who listen to them the first time... 'This Godless Endeavor' or 'Sentient 6' would be great to react and analyze! Both masterpieces!
Tool straight up called me out with this song. I was living my comfortable life watching crazy shit on the news and not realized I got wayyy too comfortable watching terrible shit happen. We need to wake tf up and care more about our fellow human beings =(
7:20 Just for a bit of context - former drummer here 🙌🏼 - that was/is the snare and those chains under the snare you refer to are called “wire snares” :) 👌🏼 The snare sounds absolutely delightful! 🤤
If you watch the video -- The two beings emerging from the eyes are the masc/fem aspects of each of our souls. The flea represents the parasitic way our sins feed off of our negative emotions, and grow into the monsters we see at the end. The ending represents killing our egos, as “pride goes before the fall,” which allows us to be reborn (the fetus in the figure’s head) - we just have to have a spiritual experience and meet the God of our Understanding or Higher Power or Allah. Also- DMT /mushrooms/ psychedelics heavily inspired this
I love Tool sooooo much. Thank god they start to tour again. That being said, if you're very much into drum skills look at the drummer from Lerpous. This guy is a god ! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nj6fM2KpyOA.html
That's some deep lyrics, but very true unfortunately. It's always good to unplug and go outside in nature or listen to music, you can never have too much music or nature
Go see them live in an arena. You'll never be the same. Fantastic and authentic review. You guys always make me emotional watching you fall in love with these guys like I did 25 years ago. Music has never been been the same. Be safe
Aileen, now you are a Led Zeppelin fan and a Tool fan you should know that Tool did a cover of the LZ classic No Quarter. It would be great if you could react to both, LZ first. Love your reactions. 😍
"The universe is hostile, so impersonal" - what a line ♡ × ∞ Tool recommendations: Always thought their song Reflection off the Lateralus album was a great depiction of depression. Also, their latest re-recording of their old song Opiate titled Opiate² is also highly recommendable.
Yeah its a snare, along with 47 others drums. Danny's drum kit is ridiculous. Even more ridiculous is how he uses the entire set seemingly so effortlessly. The man is 100% focused and in excellent shape, especially for a 50 some year old. These guys are absolutely amazing.
I'm 40 now. Been to countless shows from countless bands. My first time seeing tool was in 2001 in atlanta. By FAR the greatest live music experience of my life. The 'salival' version of pushit, lateralus, aenema, the set list goes on and on. I will never forget those feelings, visuals (scisim contortionists), and music. The drugs weren't bad either 😅
As an 'experiencer', I really appreciate how honest your interpretations of Tool are. You put words to a the wordless. Keep ranting... It's appreciated 😊
Yes- Tool is more of an experience than a band. I've watched (and continue to watch) all your Tool reactions and you are why I love reaction videos; I've watched dozens of other Tool reactions but you are my favorite. Your potent enthusiasm is contagious; I am living vicariously (pun intended), through you that brings me back to the first time I heard this song. I know you feel things more deeply/intensely than most people. But that is precisely why your reactions are so good. You are very insightful, in ways I am not and that blends well with your technical knowledge. Thank you for letting us share this with you; thank you for your time and effort that you put in as well. Continue to Spiral Out...
I was at the same show. It was actually the night the album came out. I remember Maynard saying the album comes out at midnight. I remember Maynard saying what’s up hippies? I smell patchouli!
Don't ever apologize for pauses woman!! If ppl have dumb insight with their pauses I get it but that's not you!! Be you! It's your experience and only yours! Great reaction!
Hi Aileen, thanks for the vid. I stumbled across your channel whilst recently checking out Ren stuff on RU-vid. I noticed you seem to know what you are talking about regarding music and it's composition etc. You have a friendly and cheerful approach to your videos which is nice and refreshing, cheers.
Okay Aileen…. Now you have me Vicariously excited through you !!! Scored 2 tickets earlier today for the Nov. 15th show in Boston and now watching your stank face reacting to tool makes me want to run through a Brick wall ! Lol 😂 ❤ …….and I’ve already seen them 8 times since (97) great reaction Aileen, my favorite reactor ❤️🔥❤️ “Spiral Out Keep Going” 🌀🌀🌀🌀
A cool thing about this song is Danny did it in one take. If you listen very closely to the very end of the track, you can hear "you assholes..." in the mics. The other members (Justin and Adam) were messing with him and trying to get him to screw up the take, as Danny had said he could do it in one take.
Kinda like Pearl Jam when they recorded Rearview Mirror. Eddie kept telling him do it harder to the point that his hands hurt after I believe close to 40 takes that the sound you hear at the end is the drummer throwing his drumsticks across the studio pissed off.
I always called that alarm clock sound the "death rattle." 🔔☠ It repeats throughout the song. Either way, it's moves one's consciousness to a different state. 🙃
I love the duality of the song. It's very angrily pointing out how monstrous humanity is, and even more angrily chastising those who deny the fact. Brilliant.
Vicarious is the 2nd song you show people who are Tool-curious after The Pot. That's not to say they aren't absolute masterpieces in themselves (cause they're both in my top 5), but they are a bit easier to wrap the head around before the deep dive. And Tool feels like you're suspended in an alien dark grey liquid floating inside the Andromeda galaxy. You can still see home, but you are lost in a completelyl different realm
Danny Fucking Carey, The Mystic Octopus, the greatest drummer in the worlds greatest band...I love that you said you don't listen to a Tool song, you experience it... Welcome to The Tool Army!!!
Watched plenty of your first time reaction videos. Never heard you like that. The energy and speed of putting your thoughts to words is awesome. Haven't seen that kind of excitement outside of going to live shows myself. The human octopus at his drum destroying best!!
Wait, what - no "Jesus, Maynard" this time? I was waiting for that...😆 "Vicarious" would've been a perfect song for "Nightcrawler" film (with Jake Gyllenhaal) end credits. This is basically a song version of this movie... I stopped watching TV, I don't know, maybe 15 years ago. I don't own a TV set, and I don't use any TV or VOD services on my phone or laptop. I only watch what I want, when I want on the internet, not letting others decide, what I "need" to see, hear or think. I'm a happier man now. Not by much, 'cause there's always some struggle in one's life. Always something. But definitely a bit happier.
Someone while eventually comment this but the best line of course is “Credulous at best your desire to believe in angels in the hearts of man. Pull your head on out your hippy haze and give a listen. Shouldn’t have to say it all again. The universe is hostile, so impersonal, devour to survive, so it is, so it’s always been.”
The entire 10,000 days album is a masterpiece. If you have not yet done so, go listen to each song in succession in a single sitting. I used to marathon every tool album in a single work day while doing industrial sandblasting, and it was one of the best times I've ever had. Every time. At least when I didn't accidentally slip and blast myself, haha. I would sandblast to the music - which... I don't even know how to describe, but it feels great. 10,000 days has since become my favorite of their albums - even greater than Lateralus, which I used to say would never happen.
3:07 it's funny hearing you relate this song to social media because this song was written before social media really became a thing. Without fact checking myself, I think maybe Myspace was around when this song came out, but social media FOR SURE did not exist like it does today. And now social media is kinda like a hyper accelerated version of the "bad" things this song is about. If this song was written today I'm sure Maynard would've used smartphone instead of television in the lyrics.
It's really depressing that so few people today have the attention span to listen to songs that go above 3 minutes. I literally have friends - who are fans of rock, even - who say they dislike tool because "the songs are too long" - it's supremely depressing. That one statement tells me the have not actually even listened to a full song. They stopped after a couple minutes, and ... YT keeps deleting my comment saying what that makes me feel like doing to them - even though I'm saying it in jest and it's not even a remotely extreme statement. Well, Thanks, modern culture. Thanks, TikTok. -_- Thanks YT shorts ;) no wonder those jerks censor virtually every comment I try to make. I believe this is try # 3 for this one, for the record. Pathetic.... bet this one won't even stick.
Keeping in mind that C-Tier Tool is on par with A-Tier anybody-else, Vicarious and Right in Two are two of my least favorite Tool songs, at least lyrically. They're too obvious for Tool. Looking at a Sober like the Bottom or Stinkfist or Lateralus, there are layers, there's subtext, subtly, and double meanings, like a literary puzzle. But the message in Vicarious is so obvious; TV is Bad. Musically, they're on point as usual; I just don't find the message all that interesting. But as I said, low-grade Tool is still better than most bands at their best.
Listen to Sober, Schism, The Pot and 46 and Two, and compare the lyrics to current society and I will promise you that You Have just began to enter a Rabbitt Hole you never saw coming. You are only left to believe MJK is Psychic
I really loved your reaction to this song. It’s one of Tool’s more intense songs, especially as it is so complex musically. It’s thought-provoking and never lets you settle. It’s rare that a band can consistently churn out songs that are both instantly catchy and yet still fascinating even when you’ve heard them a hundred times or more, because each time you listen to them you find something new and amazing in them. In fact, I’d say Tool are unique in being able to create songs of this quality over and over again throughout their 20+ year history.
I recently discovered your channel and have been enjoying your Tool reactions. You should really try “Right In Two”, and maybe even pair it with “Intension” since they compliment each other so well by covering the same general theme. I think you’ll really appreciate these songs. Keep up the excellent work!
I feel like you knew the potential impact of a Tool reaction as far as viewers and subscribers, so you turned everything up to 110%. You seem wired, like you chugged a pot of coffee. And it looks like you're standing when you usually sit. This is unnecessary. If you ever get to songs off their newest album, you'll need to sit comfortably, preferably with the lights off, while you float through time and space.
Welcome back! I was wondering if you were going to pick it back up on Tool. You should check out Hooker with a Penis and Bottom( ft Henry Rollins). Two of their songs on the heavy side. I’m sure you will enjoy them.
Vicarious is a masterpiece, to be sure. I can't help but make extra comments just to express that even though I've literally listened to it thousands of times since 2006 or whenever it was.
Great song and reaction as always. Probably almost as good as that coke you scored before this one. You packed 3 videos worth of commentary into this one and it was like watching a non-stop action movie. So much to say in so little time but....were you not entertained? I was :)
I'm glad you thought it was as badass as I did. Tool STILL gives me chills, to this day. I sometimes go months or even a year or two without listening to music - and then I listen to Tool and I wonder wtf was wrong with me, haha. "Why didn't I think of this sooner?!"
For another sonic game try Porcupine Tree or Thief? Gavin Harrison behind the kit is another time king. Like Carey precise throughout the set. Powerful and dynamic. Check em out.
Remember when people wanted to be doctors, lawyers, teachers, engineers. Actually useful to society careers. Now this generation expect to get paid to just watch other peoples hard work. We currently have a little over 200 people ready to just start copy striking every "react" channel to see if we can get them all demonetised. If we're successful in getting a few shut down I'll start sharing the discord everyone can join to help us clean up RU-vid
Great reaction again. Our fascination with violence and the macabre is astounding. The news media motto; "If it bleeds, it leads" You must listen to Right in Two now, flip side of the same proverbial coin. From the same album 10,000 Days.
