This BMW E30 Is A Spiritual Successor

“In my case, when I started looking for BMWs, I gravitated toward the 1991…the 1991 coupé is the last coupé they made in the E30…” says Delia Wolfe. “The 318IS is the ‘baby’ M3; it doesn’t put out as much horsepower or torque…but it was the spiritual successor, if you will, to the 2002.”
“It has everything you’d want in the 2002,” she says. Delia is the proud owner of a 1991 BMW 318IS, one of the last of the simple, mechanical, engineering-driven driver’s cars the Munich firm built its reputation on. “I found it down in Aptos, near Santa Cruz, somewhat sad and neglected-but I fell in love, because it reminded me about my 2002, and my Tii. And those cars were the cars I grew up on, those were the cars I loved first.”
Wolfe has been able to repair and restore her car-she’s a BMW mechanic, restorer, and expert-since 2008, with it remaining tied to commuting duties as well as just about anything else, from flinging it through a twisty road or embarking on a longer road trip.
“The E30 has its own cult following. People found that you could modify them with very little money, and that the cars were durable, and that there’s all kinds of places to exercise your passion,” she says. “There’s lowered and ‘stanced’ E30s, then you’ve got E30 spec racing, there’s a rally series…people run drift cars-every facet of racing seems to have a place for the E30.”
“When you choose a car, you should choose carefully,” Wolfe says. “If it’s not the right car for you, don’t keep it…[but] I have to admit, I have got a kind of a jaded view in favor of the E30.”

I'm so glad this video exists. It doesn't have to be an M3 to make it good.

Exactly! To me e30 is one of my dream cars. Love the m3 but that's never going to be affordable. Wish Forza would put a base e30 on the game.

tannerratzlaff Haha, that's exactly what I was saying to someone the other day about Forza. A standard E36 and E46 as well would make great cars to own and modify.

Only 210,000. Only big issue has been the steering rack...replaced twice...2nd time had upgraded seals, so doing great after 95K miles. Only last year, did I give her 215/45-17 tires and wheels. Stress bar, antisway bars, sport shocks, which drastically changed her stance. Already had chipped her out, free flow exhaust...the usual upgrades. Still has most original clutch etc. I baby her a lot!

In my honest opinion, the E30 is the best car BMW has ever made. It isn't the fastest or rarest, probably not the most collectible or iconic or beautiful. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder as they say and I love the looks of them. They are "my" generation of BMW, started the same year I did. Despite great cars like the Isetta, the M1, the 2002 and so many other iconic BMW's, I still say like many others, this is THE best car BMW made. They really are a true drivers car and one that the masses could buy. It was such a well rounded & balanced car, it had all the traits of a really, really good car! The E30 M3 was even better, the big flared fenders and M bodywork, magnificent little S14, love, love, love that car! Any E30 is great and the majority had the wonderful M20 in them. The early M10 I wasn't super fond of but it was a decent engine despite not having a lot of power. BMW did take it's greatest cars and put one of my least favorite engines in it, and the engine in the 318is in the video, the M42/M44 family. It did make more power than the old M10 but had a lot of problems. It was very common for the cylinder heads to crack on those engines amongst many other issues. I was a factory-trained, STEP grad and BMW Master tech for the better part of 10+ years before I went to aviation. I do miss it, at least the older cars. Before the days of all the fiber-optic buses and complex systems. I cut my teeth using the DIS, GT1 and even the MODIC testers on these cars! I'd bet you would get some funny looks in a BMW dealership service center today if you ask what a MODIC was!

mytmousemalibu I had a 320i straight six, only maintained in BMW dealerships, probably one of the best all in all car I ever had, probably not the fastest etc. But such smooth ride, really good on the dry, and never had any mechanical issue till I sold it around 140,000 miles. To this day, dumbest thing I have ever done when you find out how much it would cost to buy one (E30)....

The last half freaked me out because I just got a '91 318IS 5-speed with the M42 but it has been rebuilt after around 200,000 miles. I had to replace some hoses that had cracked and were leaking air a bit but it has been super reliable and stout for the past owner and so far that I've owned it. I was planning on engine swapping eventually anyways so I've planned financially and tool-wise to swap the engine when it has a big bill but I've grown to love it a bit, as the turbine like sound near redline is super enjoyable.

I love my E30, it's a 1991 325i convertible. Every time I get in it I just feel this strong aura off the car. I've driven this car more than 10 hours in a day and it starts and drives the same everyday. Just over 170,000 miles and I plan to keep it moving.

Bloody hell! i would never have guessed it had that many miles on it. Much respect to the owner, who clearly knows BMWs and knows a good car. The 318IS is a gem of a car, eventhough we usually prefer our E30s to have six sparkplugs.

My first car was a 1983 BMW 320i that I purchased used in 1993. Started saving up for a car when I was 14 and bought it when I turned 16. That was an awesome car to learn the basics of RWD vehicle handling. Sure, it wasn't fast but it was nimble and quick through the corners. Other than frequent repairs (we maintained our cars but there were some minor issues with the 320i) it was a blast to own. We kept the car in the family for 10 years and put 100K miles on it. Sadly, one week after we sold it locally, the kid who bought it got T-boned driving into the local Walmart but he walked away with no injuires. The car on the other hand, was totaled. At some point I will probably invest in an E30, but I am also a fan of the 635 CSi.

The 318is is a very nice E30 for daily use. And the one in the film is in really decent nick (especially with 327k miles on the clock!). I hope Delia can continue enjoying it for many years. As the M3 is virtually exploding in value and the 320is is not very common, E30s like this or the 325i are still affordable machines for enthusiasts to experience the magic of this Bavarian wonderful chassis.

I have been a Mercedes guy my whole entire life. this BMW was always the great counterpart to the 190 I certainly own. I want to take a ride in the e30 one day just to get a feeling how great it is. greetings from Germany

I am a 190 owner as well, i have driven the 3 series several times, some of them very nicely kept, other somewhat rougher. the Beemers are really great little cars, and they feel sturdy and balanced. BUT, in my opinion, they feel a bit too close to the golf VW. they corner really well, and have good grip, which after a long drive you feel in your back and kidneys, For my taste i prefer the smoother and quieter ride of the 190, but that is personal taste. I think German cars in general are the best (except Opels).

+Pablo Ruiz henao except the opels haha ^^ I think its a merc thing to be smooth and relaxing whilst driving and a bmw thing to be exciting.

Never seen an E30 during golden hour, so when I read the title in the subscription upload email from RU-vid on my phone, I think I worm-holed to my computer exceeding the speed of light. I say think, because I just don't know, natch. Beautiful condition that 318is is in, over 300k miles but looks like that? Damn. I hope my E46 looks like that when it hits the high 6 figure mileage mark.

I've had my 89 325is for just bout a year. my son and I love it; we have just about 200K on it and no rust. My best friends Dad bought one new while I was growing up, and I always thought of it as a dream car. Now it is a car that I actually dream of at night. It's just the dreams are about the drive my son and I took that day, and not about one day owning one.

Thanks for sharing your story. I, too, have an unreasonable love for the M42-powered E30 and have owned one for the last 18 years. Here and there the temptation to sell it arose, mainly when the not-so-great original timing case design reared its head multiple times over less than two years. But, I persisted, had a 2.1L M42 built when the original timing chain let loose at 210K miles, and it's been tons of fun ever since. ~200bhp in this car, with the nice light front end, is a heck of a good time. On paper it is nothing to write home about, but there are very few cars under $100k that have been, in my opinion, anywhere near the same kind of fun. With the supercars, you can't really do anything anyway because it is all too easy to wind up dead or in jail! As the saying wisely goes, "It is more fun to drive a slow car fast, than to drive a fast car slow." Just my humble opinion anyway. Given your aptitude for wrenching, if the timing chain system ever starts to act-up, consider swapping in the timing case and case-to-block gasket from a 1994-1995 M42. It eliminates the deflector sprocket which is, these days, a significant cause of engine failure. Other than the case-to-block gasket being different, it is a direct bolt-in and a huge reliability improvement.

My first car was a 90 318i coupe that I owned in Adelaide South Australia. Loved it so much taught me allot but was always comfortable and safe. Although got towed 7 times lol. Always wished I had an IS but it still was a great ownership experience. Sold it to to one of the cellar door a ladies at my favorite winery in Mclaren Vale.

Oh how I miss my 1985 E30 325I out of the dozens of cars I have owned since that time, nothing compares to the pure driving pleasure from sliding the rear end out at any opportunity LOL Now much older and wiser I plod around in an E240 Merc, yes its lovely to drive, but not anywhere near as much fun as that E30

BMW did never make an E30 Coupé, it's a 2-door. However still love the video and the car! its the best looking BMW ever made.

The last BMW E30 Coupe was produced in Europe in 1993, 1992 was the normal production year for the Coupe.

327,000 miles and still nicely rolling? I'd say, it may be impossible with modern BMW 3. :X I had basic European '89 316i (M40 engine), 5 years owning, and I can't find car with better handiness still. She could teach modern city cars what is good all-around visibility, and turn their pride into shame with her turning circle. She was excellent reporter car. When I drove to fire places, the previous car 'gave me' just smoke on photos. BMW started to give flames.

I hope people don't flame me for saying this, but I like this generation 3 series more than 2002. This is coming from someone who's parents owned (and loved) a 2002 Tii. These are cleaner. I liked the comment about it being a "spiritual successor to the 2002"?

I wish BMW still offered this color red. Their Melbourne Red Metallic is more of a brick red, while this one is bright without being tacky.
