I had no interest in signing my soul over to yet another social media platform. I got off FB this year and only use Instagram to post my photography. I feel more at peace now that I am not being bombarded with so many self centered people who don’t ever seem to lack for a posse of people willing to endlessly stroke their egos. I also had enough of everyone bickering about politics, virtual school and covid, amongst other idiotic things. I think social media is the downfall of our society.
I have a friend who lives off grid way out in the sticks. He was back in town recently. Seeing how much he had not changed showed me how much the rest of us had. I think youve made a good choice.
I believe that people face a duplicity of how they want to appear, opposed to what they really are. Social media allows people to appear as something that they are not, and therefore end up hating their own reality, hiding ever so more in social media. It is a self-fuelling world of vanity and hate, of disregard of oneself and of the truth, and jealously towards others.
PS Richard, have you ever considered doing audio books? You have a great speaking voice, and you reading this book [a chapter at a time], would be awesome!
It's no God I would love to hear the book he's talking about read by him. It's actually what I was going to do was try to find the book on audiobook. Or see if it's on RU-vid where somebody is reading it to us. I know there's a difference between it being read to you on Google and the official audio books. I just don't know if it's all called audiobooks or not so I don't want to say it wrong
The algorithm connects me with accounts that align with my interests, there are so many intelligent pages dropping a wealth of knowledge that I realized you just have to seek to find
yesss that part. I think with Tiktok I find I have to be more conscious about hat I interact with so that I find accounts that align with me and people who are on the app to spread goodness and truth. I guess the fyp can even be a reflection of our daily interests. good way to measure or regulate our inner life and growth
Great discussion! Nature is what keeps me connected to the divine. The stars, mountains, flowers, birds... not the human world so much, but art and music is another way.
"Dostoyevsky and Nietzsche put me off tic tok for life"... A quote worthy of Oscar Wilde. Bravo. Like all the best things in life... They come unexpectedly, when we're not looking for them
Life is so much better since I deleted my fb. I’ve only seen a few tick tok things The only ones I’ve seen that seem pure are people with their dogs.sharing the joy of their dog.
With cats too! 🥰 Actually, I’ve discovered MANY POSITIVE people & subjects on tiktok. People making crafts & cooking tips. It’s all about CONTROLLING what you want to see in the app.
Agreed....it seems to me, and including me, watching dogs play, nature at work breaks my heart. I feel joy in watching what is natural, whilst devastated by the human disconnect from it. We've become unnatural, and therefore insane. What foods should be eaten, what are healthy relationships? What other "animal" is trying to figure this out? None.
I had no mind to understand others. I was a fixer. Then a narcissist showed me how futile my efforts can be. How can you fix the uncontrollable, the godless, the shapeless. When you learn to see how different you behave than to those with no hope, no faith, no rules, no bounds, no spirit then you feel awesome about your little existence. Nothingness becomes all A Simple self does not need fixing of any kind nor does it need to pretend for others to see. (Tiktok)
Somebody (cs lewis?) Called them soulless. And said that they talk alot. Later, i found out that they must talk alot. The silence scares the hell out of them.
The truth is we are blessed of having been in close contact with narcs. 1. We have survived, therefore we are strong. 2. We learnt A LOT. We can identify and handle them now miles away. 3. As a consequence of '2', we are aware of what's happening rigth now on the world. I think maybe I could't have identified the massive gaslighting, cognitive dissonance, etc... That they are throwing everywhere.
@@rubenv.p.6344 true words Ruben. For me, the learning started at supernova speed once I realized my wrong doing, my unaware behaviors, my stubborn beliefs, my disassociated self that misbehaved, my tyrant critic towards others, my pain thirsty martyr that loved suffering and enjoyed playing victim... oh gosh! Once I learned to observe others I was able to observe myself. It was painful to go through all my memories and relieved them with a mirror pointing at me. But I did it and I am proof that you can willingly go through a double hell and live to tell about it: the one my husband put me through and the one I put myself through. Richard told me to save myself. That nobody was coming to rescue me. Richard told me that I needed to change the records of my superego. Richard told me to soften my inner critic and become self compassionate. So I did. 🌱
*"The mystery of human existence lies not just in staying alive, but in finding something to live for."* Tiktok doesn't impart that sentiment. It doesn't give us anything to live for, only ourselves, and mindless clicks of the "like" button. I highly recommend "Fahrenheit 451" by Ray Bradbury, a lighter read for sure, where we see the importance of books and free thought in a godless, controlling society.
Thank you Richard for yet another well thought out, well spoken message. 👏 I hadn't given much thought to why TikTok didn't appeal to me. I think you hit the nail on the head. The inauthenticity of TikTok (click bait type performances) has probably kept me away from it.
@lloyd99984 No. This isn’t the case. Yes, women can also be narcissists…but maybe you should believe and honor the experiences of women instead of jumping right into the “WOMAN BAD. She must be reason bad thing happen “ explanation.
The "I am god" concept is suppossed to be constructively applied, meaning to take responsibility for your own fate and become your best version. This is positive individualism. The social media grind couldn't have less to do with that as they create their own appealing fake persona in order to sell themselves. It's either two faces or a soulless slave.
That's just another way of getting around God and worshipping self. You are a creation not the creator. There is no "I'm God concept" because you can't be like God, just seriously saying "I'm God" shows already a self-delusion. It's the "i try to do what God's wants and follow what he commands for this life" concept, at the same time well knowing it's impossible to do this perfectly. But how can you do that if you don't even know what this is. That's where Jesus Christ and the Bible come's into play which tells us about all these things.
I hated tik tok the second I heard of it. Like you said, we should all be skeptical and resistant towards time wasting tech products, but what I found to be most sinister was how anyone at any age could become highly addicted to it. I became instantly addicted and eventually deleted the app and swore it off. I look at it like crack and I hate seeing kids get hooked on this stuff.
I took a break from watching your videos. I forgot how much I appreciate your intellect and how you tie complex dynamics together, threading the needle so to speak. Anyhow, thank you so much for being here.
T tried everything to avoid making this app accessible to the US (for a reason). Can't believe ppl really download this or allow their children to download this. Lost all last hope in humans. Postmodernism on its way downhill in light speed. Human degradation is on display everywhere now
Wow I feel so validated right now... because those are the same feelings I've had towards the social medias to the point where, I see through it and the bs. I've got to read this book!
This one knocked my socks off Richard. When Twitter came out, I stayed far away. Only used Facebook for family and close friends for a long time. I still don't have tiktok but my friend sends me videos. I'm so glad that you do the deeper thinking so I can be introduced to further explore my own thoughts on the subject.
Consider yourself healed. :) I am so grateful for your videos Richard. ... never read this book but took myself off of social media years ago and it still makes me incredibly sad. It is a tadpole pool where everyone is screaming for attention, regardless of who they are talking to. Just attention. It seems the most destructive narcissistic tendencies have been normalised... Your views are really valuable, keep sharing!!!
I don't use tik tok, but there's a lot of people who need to hear this. Thanks. I'm at a loss as to how this could be given to those who need this most.
Richard Ive felt everything you've said for years and at times found the world confusing battling to understand my gut feeling's or sub-conscience , you have explained it to give my some certainty its not me going mad its socerity . Thanks .
You are not getting mad, I am also struggling in this weird external environment we have created full of materialism and idiotic behaviour. This world is not for deeply conscious ones, it is more for human like robots unfortunately..
It's not you, find some sane people to be friends with which really helps shake the feeling that "statistically it should be more likely I'm insane than that the world is".
Absolutely it's society. I always talk to my kids and tell them it is not crazy to not fit into this world. This "world" is quite mad. If you function perfectly in this world, finding no problem with it for the most part (as if this were a natural and sane way of functioning) , that indicates a significant problem with self, for this world is clearly dysfunctional and mad in it's nature.
Ohh goody. Richard, you are on fire 🔥. Waiting for your third eye popping video you mentioned about in one of your recent vidios. 🤣. I'm here because I love you 🥰. I'm not codependent anymore. Haha. Love the way how you blend phycology with philosophy Etc. It's Very refreshing. Thanks for the time and effort you put in. Very much appreciated and I think I speak for alot of people.
Welcome to the era of outrage, drama, "over the top" emotions, pleasure driven society, attention span of a gold fish, etc. If only TikTok was the sole platform for this. MSM, politics, science and education are right up that alley as well. Idiocracy was sadly a prophetic movie
We are just part of the easy times make weak men cycle. We are living in very easy times indeed. Just like Rome fell into depravity before it was destroyed.
I have a repulsion to these platforms. It almost makes me gag. It almost feel I have no choice and I am Very selective. But you have to always have a foot on the break and that is Exhausting. I prefer to go the other way, and reject it as I feel it. That liberated me.
Good for you, Richard! I spent two years off of all SM and then went back on FB bowing to pressure from people in my life. I'm off of it, again. I'm only on IG. People who can't be bothered to text me or write me (yes, I've taken up letter writing) will have to fall by the wayside if they can't maintain a relationship outside of FB.
Deleted all my social media years ago now. One of the best decisions of my life. Never used Tiktok because I could see as soon as it came out that it was cancerous
"You're the weak god of a permanently dying world..." Yes. This. And, the constant, existential terror requires hysterical consumption for self soothing. Consumption of things, instant-pleasure content, shallow validation from others... Cheap and fast, of course.
I think the Buddhist view offers a way, a different view from the quandary of god/no god (= death) by encouraging learning about escapism behaviors and narcissism. They also offer insight into the magic and mystery of life by acknowledging the extraordinary in the ordinary...all this and no need to have any sort of black or white thinking, any extremes of thought about whether or not you’re a god, etc. It’s the ‘religion of no religion’ and people can find peace in a middle path between extremes. It takes time to find out about your self and shadow sides, illusions, egoism and all that goes into becoming and maintaining being an adult human. You can with openness and cultivating truth, simplicity and honesty in all your relationships continuously learn about life which is both boring and exhilarating and somewhere in between most of the time. Of course you won’t be popular or a standout person among those looking for instant gratification. But, then consciousness, a symbol of which is the sly smile of the sitting Buddha, is it’s own reward, eventually. Earth is our home and is all the mystery and beauty you could ask for. This is not to be feared because it is part of the life/death cycle in the many seasons of growing up human. When we learn to live with earth, accept death, and mystery, it will be more than enough. We are taught to fear death and we have beliefs to comfort us that we will go to heaven and god is just. That’s ok too, but it does tend to block ones acceptance of being an earth dweller on this living thriving pulsating creation and worshipping both it and our incredible bodies. I think we turn our fear and frustration outward and project it on the planet in how we treat it and others. If you loved yourself and others you would want to do all in your power to love this planet. If you’ve ever have a second chance at life you are made immediately aware of how precious it is to breathe air and drink water. We become so jaded by life due to trauma and a lack of good love and support that we have to reach for extremes to feel much of anything. Tik tok is just a symptom of a society in decline that has developed these sorts of distractions to deal with the hunger for stimulation mostly brought on by an immature emotional existence. I’m not advocating being a Buddhist but merely pointing a finger in the direction of life and how belief systems can discourage an open mind/enquiry that encourages the healthy human development of an internal guidance system that embraces complexity within this lifetime.
I like sharing of myself on social media.. but I've often felt that I just don't fit. I've never felt called to do the dance challenges or "perform" for the people. I appreciate having platforms to share my heart, through my thoughts & feelings about things. I recognize how dangerous social media can be for me. I have navigated many different forms of addiction throughout my life & I can see where social media (screen time in general) feeds my ego/addictive tendencies. My higher self doesn't care for social media. My egoic self loves it. I want to live my life, not spend my time watching other people live theirs. That thought brings me back to what's important to me.
This is excellent. I’ve also felt that insincerity and your words articulate this deep feeling and resistance I’ve had to it, and now it’s so clear why. TikTok, and other social media platforms, are a source of narcissistic supply for so many, and that’s why it feels so devoid of soul. But when I find videos like this, I feel connected, inspired, enthralled for deepening my understanding of the human experience, which is why I love RU-vid so much. I think social media is highlighting and exacerbating the condition of being disconnected from the self. From my understanding of narcissism (studying to understand relationship dynamics in my family and academically studying empathy, as well as with a mentor) is that at it’s core, it’s a Self Love Deficiency Disorder. This is why they put other people down to feel better about themselves and constantly look to the material world for validation, because they don’t actually feel good about themselves and they hide it in grandeur and over-confidence. Narcissism has been misconstrued in our culture as an abundance of self love, but it’s really self obsession to try and feel connected to themselves somehow. Whereas empathy is actually an ability to love one self so deeply and understand the inextricable connection between all of us, that we’re able to understand another humans experience and hold space for them to express their truth, who they are, move through emotion and heal. I’m rereading Brene Brown’s Braving the Wilderness, and in chapter 2, she talks about the Spiritual Crisis- that we’ve lost touch with this inextricable connection that cannot be broken, but can be forgot. I now see narcissism and insincerity from an empathic perspective- of someone who’s puts self above all but yet feels disconnected from self, and it’s really sad. When someone is connected to self, to Spirit, God, Consciousness, whatever you call it- authenticity, love and creativity are abundant. It’s within us, as well as without- It’s not necessarily a higher power, but it’s also everything, including us. Thank you for your thoughts on this. Will be watching again and pondering this for a while, as well as finally reading Nietzsche!
What pops up on there depends on what you watch.apps these days have an algorithm.Videos of people dancing never pop up on my tiktok cause I only watch educational videos.Like videos about history l,laws the government is secretly passing, new virus's the government might release, spiritual biblical things.stupid stuff will only pop Up if you watch stupid stuff.
I know what you mean by narc supply my dad gets that from Facebook.it's crazy how he appears to be a guy with a lot of money who has his self put together yet me and him were basically homeless.
Cool, I just started to read it a week ago, and I took a picture of the page and marked this quote and now you show up in my RU-vid feed with this quote.
I went onto Tiktok, just to find a laugh, but there are so many rabbit holes to go down, and I found it to be a cesspool of ...something. What a book - so fitting for the times we live in and the social media platforms we may frequent.
When a few words can change alot. My dad always told me 'there is always a silver lining behind every dark cloud', and that 'time is a healer/would tell'.
Tik tok is ridiculous, I've never watched it personally, but the kiddo(teenager 16 watching around younger brothers so I hear enough,😨, and frequently have a wtf moment and have to censor
I got off of social media in 2014/2015 definitely before they announced they candidates for presidency. Honestly, I’m glad I did. The only thing I have is RU-vid, but that’s for random recipes, how to’s, podcasts and little here and there entertainment. But from the videos I saw about the reactions about the presidential candidates and the insanity, literal insanity that ensued from there, following for 4 years straight and still going on, I’m so relieved I didn’t have to witness it on such platforms. It was already so toxic when I deleted the ones I had. I can only imagine the extreme toxicity it is now. Narcissism galore. I saw it, but the book you spoke of put it into perspective more. It’s funny I used to say that people no longer have faith or believe in god. There are no moral compasses to guide. We all need something to believe, so they turned politics into religion. But this seems to go deeper a hit it more spot on. Thank you for sharing
At the risk of being a total nerd, those apps make me think of R. Jordan's Wheel of Time, where he described (insert magic jargon here) as "like a cool, clear pond covered with a slick layer of rancid oil" It's exhilarating and exciting, but you come away feeling dirtied by the experience.
Brilliant! And I wasn't even going to click on this. I challenge anyone to look up at the sky on a starry night and say there is no-one out there. There is too much beauty in the real stuff to even worry about the plastic
Thank god you are off those wastedApps, now you can make really interesting videos and inspire people to go into the good old books. I love the quote and cant wait to pick up the book! Thank you again and cheers!
I have an ex who read lots of Nietzsche and she became very distant because I didn't read lots of Nietzsche . I do think about stuff a lot and contemplate a lot . I also look at people and my experiences as working class . I'm agnostic but understand a need for spirituality. People who read but don't apply what they read become fake intellectuals that seek validity from those like themselves . I'm not lettered but ordinary . Not well educated but I seek only to find contentment in my work and in helping others . I find tik tok insufferable now . I did enjoy it at one point , now it grates at me like much social media . I'm sorry if this is a wandering comment
Yano I subbed to you about 10 years ago when I had a curiosity about the MBTI and I saw you do some videos on it. I'm younger than you by just about over 10 years. I've been increasingly watching your content this last few since it's only been getting better. I love the arc you've been on as a person this past decade and seeing that play out probably in part because it's mirrored my own a lot. Although back then I was incredibly worldly ignorant being only just an adult but your content, ideas and wisdom within them I've found very valuable. I hope we both continue down this path and in 10 more years we'll both be more the wiser. Cheers! Oh and incidentally this was the next Dostoevsky book on my list, nice synchronicity there. Can't wait to read it
Sir, it's amazing that my eyes were glued to you the whole time and my ears were as if they were clean because your words went straight to my mind and heart. Smart!!
I liked this a lot, I have one suggestion here. Since you read so much about mind and control of mind. You may like eastern science of Darshana studies. Darshana is a Sanskrit word with no proper English translation but closest it can be is Hellenistic thought. There are six broad Darshana in Santana Dharma also called as umbrella for multitude of eastern philosophies including primarily Hinduism. 1) Yoga - this is not just physical yoga but with mental dhyana - meditation is closest word to Dhyana. 2) Sankhya - Many who identify themselves as atheists or theists but not religious in traditional way or agnostic follow this. 3) Nyaya 4) Vaisheshika 5) Purva Mimamsa 6) Vedanta Anyone here interested may explore each one of them atleast read about them as much as possible. Ultimately everyone is on journey of truth in their own way their own experiences.
I’m not sure how I ended up here but so glad I did. Lack of sincerity and truth in these days is unbearable for me, it’s not even valued by most in today’s society.

We should be humble. Religion is not truth but believe. We don't need God, we need to understand our place in the world and work towards a better one for everyone by being the best version of ourselves we could be.
@@christinsongbird memory, and if you helped those around you, a better world. Of course we are not saviours, we can't help everyone. But being and doing the best we can, can help those around us to build a better life and help others themselves.
Truth is... No matter what anyone actually beLIEves in anymore, spirituality of the heart and human self is being forgotten and turned into a materialistic, competitive, corporate world to satisfy the Ego. Lack of compassion and bliss from within, allowing greed to win. A machine with no heart is a soul less robot.
Brilliant and highly intellectually, as always! Richard, thank you for your work! I wish TikTok had more content like that 😅 yet it’s such a waste of time in general.
Fabulous. Though I have to say that the thing that most surprises me is that I never hear “Tik Tok people” talk or openly consider that the platform comes from a land of an authoritarian regime, therefore supports that regime. I don’t understand that part at all.
"For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, “He catches the wise in their craftiness”; "For since, in the wisdom of God, the world through wisdom did not know God, it pleased God through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe." "Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men." "The fool has said in his heart, “ There is no God.” They are corrupt, They have done abominable works, There is none who does good."
This is what made me commit to the idea of radical honesty: the observation of how the liers stop seeing reality.like sort of Alzheimer.while keeping straight front, they are sliding in sort of hellish abyss, they canty stop.love to our dear Gran.
In glad this book had such an effect on you, you ve made me want to read it, i'll do it soon. That s how ive always felt about tik tok and its powerful effect on controling young mind into self glamorizing and "look at me im so clever/good/bad/altruistic/funny/different/weird...
Spot on! I’ve always felt that society had lost the moral compass that god proves. In the past in the mid years of ones life when individuals stray from god they always had a moral compass to fall back on. Currently it feels we are absent of that.
Thank you for this. I've had this nagging voice in my head screaming the same thing about Instagram for the last year or so. It's just sooo fucking fake now (probably trying to stay competitive with TikTok) . It truly baffles my mind that people actually enjoy, click, like, subscribe to the inanity of it all. I'm now looking for a nice copy of The Brothers Karamazov. It's been on my list for a while, but it just got bumped to the top.
Thank you for your video. I know someone who has a Facebook blog for several years, she posts all uplifting and original inspiring material from her own Consciousness and hardly anyone cares. Meanwhile I see over a million views and thousands of followers for people who post things superficial and inane.
I've always been disgusted with it, I didn't need a book to tell me that. That's why I create Night Game. It's a commentary on how lack of emotional intimacy has made people allergic to truth.
Yes indeed.. we are living in the times of the Last man.. God and Nature ( Spirit and Soul ) has been replaced by bad bread and circuses .. For permanently juvenile terrified of boredom, reality, adulthood and death it’s the only option.. It really was a poor swap.
Wow! I have that “Lie” quote as my phones screen background. And started reading Karamazov brothers in 2000. Didn’t finish. Thank you for the moral share!
Loved this🤗could listen to you read from a book every day 😁my daughter took a moment to listen with me. I myself have gone the full circle many times on if there was no God..what then. And it directly correlates to the sense of self and the regulating of it. And it does not add up that there is nothing else but us. Because we only perceive a fraction of things around us. Thank you Richard it is always a mind juggle to listen to you.
The Brothers Karamazov is my favorite book and love that you quoted from it. It still has valid lessons for us today & I think of it often in these crazy & narcissistic times. We are drinking from the cup of big egos and selfishness.
@The Green Wood Elf - Yes, Satan got the boot for being disrespectful and assuming he was God Himself. He didn't know his place so sought to take the place of God. God enforced a boundary. Higher mind elevated perspective is more of a humble, unassuming, respectful clear view of things to see them just as they are from the mountain top. We're all interconnected yet don't need to enmesh to the point we lose ourselves, we can sincerely appreciate and show respect for a flower without plucking it, seeking flower's attention or wanting to be it. It's about remaining soverign and true to yourself, to stay well aligned in higher vibrational energies in thought, words, emotions and deeds. Any change needs to come from within and be well aligned with best intent for all concerned. ❤️
