I think the original Star Wars novel had a lot to do with the China discrepancies. The novel (George Lucas was the credited writer, though Alan Dean Foster is said to have written it) hinted at a Luke-Leia romance which became a focus of Foster's 1978 sequel "Splinter Of A Mind's Eye."
I feel bad when The Return of the Jedi comic released and Leia was revealed to be Luke's sister. Especially if they took some...artistic liberties...with the kiss scene in Empire
The galactic republic was always part of star wars. In fact the first line is ripped from pre editted title crawl of a new hope. Jeffy I remember one Marvel comic from 1979 that introduced Jabba the Hutt. He was a golden space monkey with fins on his head, rather than a giant slug. It was very weird to look at thirty years later.
Luke being Blue 5 instead of Red 5 wasn't a change for the Chinese market. He's actually Blue 5 in the script and the novelization, which is what I'm guessing they based this on. It was changed to red in the movie because blue stuff turned black against the blue screens they were using. If you watch the non-Special Editions, you can see it happen to R2 a lot.

What is odd-- some of these details were actually accurate to an earlier script. At one time the Stormtroopers WERE going to look a lot more like Boba Fett-- and Luke's squadron was originally going to be blue squadron instead of red squadron.
I found an early draft of George's script online long before the prequels, back when Skywalker was Starkiller and Leia was far from the badass she became. This incredible mess sounds very similar to it. It gave me hope. If George could write that badly and turn it into Star Wars, maybe I had a chance.
This amalgamation of sci-fi film ultra bootleg comic is freakin glorious. I'm totally digging Leia's design here. Not to mention the artwork is great, aside from the lack of color probably from the lack of budget, but still great!
What she's wearing on the first panel shown is a "traje de luces", a bullfighter suit. Probably ripped it straight off a picture/artwork of a bullfighter
I'm only slightly familiar with Manga, but I think it is traditionally black and white inside. I understand that's Japanese, of course, but that's closer to what they had as an influence than Western style full color.
I can't be the only one who thinks the artwork was actually really dope. In some ways it looks more interesting than the original. Like a Star Wars alternate history spinoff or something. Also, "The Dark-Robed Lord Vader" is ten times cooler than Darth Vader holy shit

You don't realise, this is pure gold. I dream of a world where all my favorite fictional universes are adapted by artists who have only a script to work on. I mean, to see what image came in the minds of those guys when they red the story is amazing. The plot is still here, it's the same story, but the universe is a whole new thing. Love it
I have a feeling that this adaptation was based on the film novelization, which was based on an earlier script where Red Squadron was Blue Squadron (which was changed due to the color blue not working well with blue screen effects) and had several illusions to Earth creatures, such as dinosaurs and pandas.
In my opinion, the comic is great. It’s the best that could have been done, it’s surprisingly faithful to the source material, and I love the alternate designs for many of the vehicles and locations. It’s truly something great.
That "Star Destroyer with teeth " is the Yamato from Space Cruiser Yamato, aka Star Blazers. And those aren't teeth: they're the trench-lines of the Wave Motion Gun.
The artists definitely got a hold of McQuarrie's concept art, because Boba Fett's armor was in fact the early Stormtrooper armor, which was later somewhat retconned in the prequels as Stormtrooper armor being based off of Clone Trooper armor, which in turn was based off of Mandalorian armor. As for Chimp-bacca, McQuarrie originally envisioned Chewie as being more primate-like, than the Wookiee we see onscreen. Also, the comic, despite being mistranslated, is surprisingly far better than the Engrish we see today, and all this stuff had to be done under the oppression of Mao, which is quite miraculous.
Back in the day, in Italy, someone decided to keep Jedi English spelling, but pronounce it as though it were "Yedee" Also, they went on to "translate" some names: Han Solo = Ian Solo 3-3PO = D-3BO R2-D2 = C1-P8 Darth Vader = Dart Fener (just about always called Lord Fener) Death Star = Morte Nera [Black Death] Finally, In the Italian version, a "Yedee" would clearly wield a laser sword (spada laser).
That "Star Destroyer" with teeth looks like the battleship Yamato from Uchū Senkan Yamato, directed by Leiji Matsumoto. Probably the chinese had some material available giving Japan is not far.
How about a *bootleg* holiday special? A few things worth mentioning... "Transuniversal Carrier Ships" "In a certain vast galaxy, the entirety of which was ruled by the Galactic Republic in the past, but now this Republic has been destroyed, and is now ruled by a Galactic Empire..." "Luke feels as if his entire heart and soul has come into the sway of the princess." and 6:06... and "Let the weird flow through you!"
This is so intriguing. This should be a thing, like, describing the plot of something to an artist and having them try to recreate it with their own imaginings. Kind of like those videos where professional artists upgrade their kids' doodles.
Seems like that made this by reading the script. The blue squadron hints that big time to me. Red squadron was originally blue squadron (hence blue squadron in rouge one) but due to special effects tech at the time, the blue came out black in space shots, so they changed it to red.
So my family adopted three girls from China who grew up there till about age 14. And yeah ... without the cultural background in Star Wars, they just ... really ... really can't get into Star Wars. No matter what. We've tried. We've tried everything. Original trilogy? Might as well have been a six-hour screen saver. Prequel trilogy? Apparently a blank screen would have been more riveting to them. Rogue One, they started off okay but then they just wandered out of the room before the halfway point. They didn't mind The Force Awakens, interestingly. They liked Chewbacca in it. They thought he was cute. But I can't get them to watch a single solitary minute more of the series now. I'd be surprised if a Star Wars film ever makes it big in China. I love my sisters, but Star Wars is a banned subject in polite conversation now.

I think the reason stormtroopers looked like Boba Fett was because the original concept art was for stormtroopers was probably shipped to China, leading them to believe that was what stormtroopers looked like.

In the American comic adaptation, and in the novelization, Luke was Blue 5. But in the 70s and 80s, they used blue screen instead of green screen. So the blue stripes on Luke's fighter would have either shown the Death Star or stars, depending on which way you were looking.
At 3:52 bottom right next to the Boba Fett Stormtroopers is the head of 2-1B Medical Droid from Empire Strikes Back, and at 4:10 the 'Sandcrawler' looks VERY close to the 'Juggernaut' tank as seen in Revenge of The Sith and Rogue One.
The Boba Fett outfit was the prototype costume for stormtroopers, if the author wasn’t aware the outfit was simplified due to budget constraints it would be an easy to mistake to make.
7:54 - a lot of it is based on nostalgia! We all come to The Wars from different beginnings but ultimately one part or another of it grabbed us and we held on tight. Comics, books, movies, cartoons, action figures, video games, etc.... 40 years worth of it and we all hold some piece of it in high regards in our hearts. So Super Star Wars Nerds to just Star Wars Fans, we love it and will keep coming back. That's the reason why I'm OK with Disney owning it now. Disney isn't going anywhere, therefor the future of Star Wars is secure.
