They already have in the mid-range. Because of 5700 and 5700xt nvidia announced their their "super" lineup to bring the competition in line with them. And once AMD announced 5600xt for 279, Nvidia dropped the RTX 2060 from 349 to 299 (effectively killing their whole 1660Ti lineup of cards)

@@Baffuteagle because the overwhelming majority of people buying pre built PCs don't have a clue about components nor do they want to spend any amount of time learning about any of that. That's the reason they buy a pre built PC. They want to tell a salesman what they want to run on it and hope the salesman tells them "this can run that". Also since people who would even consider buying a pre built PC usually buy one every 15 to 20 years Intel's dominance from the early days (which very much used to be a thing back then) still lingers. To clarify, the idea that Ryzen "doesn't support AVX" comes from the fact that Intel CPUs use two 128-bit AVX execution units per core, allowing two 128-bit AVX instructions or one 256-bit AVX instructions to be executed in a single cycle, while Zen and Zen+ only have a single execution unit, allowing only a single 128-bit AVX instruction per cycle and requiring 256-bit instructions to be broken in half and completed over two cycles. Zen 2 CPUs don't have this problem, they have dual AVX units per core. AMD also have no CPUs on the market with AVX-512 support, while Intel only implements it in Xeon and X-series parts, mostly because it's use is extremely specialised due to it's enormous memory bandwidth requirements and power draw.
@Xirtamani
@Xirtamani 4 года назад
It's not called AVX-128 (and not correct technically either, AVX uses 256 already) and not AVX-256 but rather AVX and AVX2. But DAAMN, Jay not knowing shit about a (nowadays) basic instruction being able to be used by AMD-CPUs since Bulldozer (AVX2 then by Excavator) is embarassing. Even more so since it was even talked about recently with the news with the Matlab/Intel MKL-Bullshit with Intel shutting down AVX-use by non-Intel-processors.

@@auturgicflosculator2183 Hi John, I think your information is a bit outdated and innaccurate. First Intel. Only some of Intel's lineup support AVX512. For example, none of the 10th Gen Desktop chips support AVX 512, this include things like their "flagship" Core-i9 10900K. With mobile chips, only some of them support AVX512, and many don't. In addition, Intel disable AVX and AVX2 on all their Celeron and Pentium chips, even the latest 10th gen chips. AMD on the other hand never disable AVX/AVX2 on their budget chips. Now AMD. AMD chips do not support AVX512 yet (although it's rumored to be coming before the end of the year). The first and second gen Ryzen (Zen 1 and Zen 1+) chips did support all the 256bit AVX2 instructions, but did so at half speed. All of the more recent Ryzen chips (Zen 2), anything released after June 2019, do in fact, run the 256bit AVX2 instructions at full speed. You don't need to believe me, try reading a review of the 3800X from almost a year ago: www.tomshardware.com/reviews/amd-ryzen-7-3800x-review,6226-10.html I'll quote: "We can also see the vast improvement in Ryzen's AVX performance in the y-cruncher tests: We would never have imagined such a massive generational leap, particularly in single-threaded performance. The work AMD has done here is truly impressive and benefits a wide range of professional applications." or try another review: www.anandtech.com/show/14605/the-and-ryzen-3700x-3900x-review-raising-the-bar/2 where they say: "there’s one obvious new chance in the 3900X and Zen2: the inclusion of 256-bit wide datapaths. The new AGU and path changes mean that the core is able to now handle 256-bit AVX instruction once per cycle which is a doubling over the 128-bit datapaths of Zen and Zen+." Lastly, did you see JayzTwoCents latest video, he admits that he made a mistake about this.

@@richretrochan I doubt that AMD will introduce AVX-512. 10:00 That's not true. Ryzen has supported AVX and AVX2 since Zen 1. Zen 2 made AVX2 faster by increasing the width of the FPU's, so it's now on par with Intel with AVX2 instructions. However Timespy favors Intel, it isn't by having AVX instructions.
@photonboy999
@photonboy999 4 года назад
Does Timespy favor Intel now though? And when you say "favors Intel" do you mean the code is optimized towards Intel or Intel CPU's are winning simply because they run at a higher frequency? You didn't specify a specific Intel CPU so it feels like you are implying some bias in the code (which may or may not be true). So it feels like the best way to test this would be to have a modern representative from both Intel and AMD run at the same frequency. Say, 4.0GHz... Either way, I tried to Google for comparisons of the AMD Ryzen 3000 series and Intel's 9000/10000 series and i found evidence that the scores are similar but I couldn't find any reliable links... I can't find ANY evidence that Timespy currently favors Intel simply because of architecture.
@Kankipappa
@Kankipappa 4 года назад
@@photonboy999 Pretty sure it's the cpu optimizations. I can't now find the youtube video about when zen was released, but on quake2 if you compiled the renderer with amdnow! support (that was dropped from amd cpus like a decade ago), 1700X was actually faster on his youtube comparison than the optimized intel in the game - which was kinda weird that and old amdnow! code would still work in anyway good. It just tells me that there are many ways of optimizing your speed and lets be honest here, AMD is the underdog in both CPU and GPU, when it comes to software optimizations by 3rd parties. Hell even Microsoft managed to show how bad the OS is for anything that isn't a Intel CPU clone that got patched up by many times on Win10 already. Nvidia has less raw power on most rendering when it comes to the similar gpu prices head to head, while still wrecks amd gpu's, until the later aka mysterious "fine wine" tech appears.
@TrueThanny
@TrueThanny 4 года назад
@@photonboy999 I don't really know if it does or doesn't, but I've seen plenty of CPU reviews which show the Ryzen chip beating the comparable Intel chip in Firestrike, then losing in Timespy, so just assumed Jay was talking about Timespy when he just said 3DMark. I don't know if that's actually a consistent thing, or what the reason might be. It could be Intel optimizations, or it could be Timespy being more sensitive to memory and cache latency.

@photonboy999
@photonboy999 4 года назад
Excited for Zen 3? Sure, but if I were you I might be more excited with the fact that games are getting better THREADED as time goes on and that the 2020 consoles will accelerate these code changes for newer games... in some games you will currently have a CPU BOTTLENECK despite using, say, only 2/3rds of your CPU processing power. So in the future there are two main ways YOU will see better performance assuming the game is CPU bottlenecked (not graphics or storage)-> #1) you bought a CPU with same or more cores that is faster per core (like R5-4600), or #2) the game utilizes your existing CPU cores better That won't help existing games if you have a CPU bottleneck and want higher FPS but if your goal is to achieve a good FPS in a 2022 game for example, then by then the issue may simply solve itself with better coding.

@@photonboy999 TO BE FAIR, current consoles are 8 cores. GRANTED, 8 "slow" cores, but still 8 cores. The multi-threaded workloads are there. New consoles are continuing that trend. The real kick is the single core performance, on all 8 cores, plus the much faster gpu. EVEN WITH utilizing 8 cores NOW on cross-platform games (COD, COD Warzone, Apex Legends) 6 core cpu's still hold firm. In that regards, an 8 core might show 20-30% utilization, while a 6 core will show 50-70% utilization. obviously a 4 core 8 thread might struggle depending on age with minor stutters (thinking to Dr Disrespect with his 4 core 8 thread intel gaming rig, it stutters in cod because it does in fact want more cores). Even when the new consoles come, we still wont see huge changes. Consoles never fully utilize its own hardware these days. Otherwise cross-play games would be using more like 80-90% utilization on all 8 cores. I have tested COD Warzone on an AMD 8350 which many will claim "isn't a true 8 core" and yet it runs great, no stutters, and the utilization is nowhere near 100% on every core.... and the reason i bring that up, is that the current consoles are "jaguar cores" which are "slightly" newer than the 8350 "Piledriver", so if consoles were using all 8 cores at a high load %, then the same should be said for an 8350, and it doesn't happen. Its only about half, 55% ish load on all 8 cores. Still more than say a ryzen 1800x which barely see's 20% load on a handful of cores..... but still.

One of the best priced and most performant budget CPUs of all time. Meanwhile we're in the most over-inflated price gouging GPU bubble of all time. Bottom line graphics cards that would have cost 70-100 dollars years earlier are now 200-250 dollars, budget graphics cards are 300-400 dollars (sometimes edging up to 500ish depending on model, and memory configuration), middle of the line graphics cards are like 600, and top end are 800-1000, (which aren't even top end anymore, because they've added higher tiers that are like 1200+ dollars). It's unbelievable. 1060s were like 200-250 dollars depending on the configuration, why are 2060s almost pushing 400??? "Increased demand from people staying inside because of 'coronavirus' is going to be the next big sham to extort money out of gamers just like 'bitcoin' miners" graphics card mining has been on the out for a while now, and the prices are as awful as ever.. Oh and what did Nvidia do then? Instead of making more graphics cards to meet the demand they made special "mining" cards that can't be used for gaming, so they can continue charging ridiculous premiums. Right now if Nvidia weren't so anti-consumer, we should be having the cheapest GPU prices ever from miners selling off old cards, but instead we have second hand gtx 1060s (a four year old graphics card) selling for almost as much as its original msrp on ebay, while mining equivalents of the same card are being thrown away.

Zen and Zen+ has four 128-bit floating point execution units. Two for adding, two for multiplying. To handle 256-bit AVX2 instructions, they had to combine them, resulting in one adder and one multiplier. Intel has two 256-bit floating point units, each capable of either addition or multiplication. That gave Intel an advantage with AVX2. Zen 2 increased the width of the floating point units to 256 bits, so it no longer has to combine them for AVX2. Intel has no AVX or AVX2 advantage against Zen 2

Way to go AMD, I've been following up with their advancement, even started buying AMD based servers at work.

Honestly? I run an amd 860k, my stepson is on the apu version of the same processor, with the current situation and the according drop in wages, this looks like a great upgrade for both of us - the platform allows great expandability and it creates an extremely low cost of entry, which, when you have to buy two of everything, is a benefit. We won't even be in a position to buy before b550 hits, but I'd be more than happy pairing this up with a decent b450 board tbh, nvme is a big step up over sata ssd boot drives and it beats signing up to an intel platform likely dead in 18 months.

This era of CPU innovation is like when they started putting turbos on regular cars back in the eighties. Suddenly the average consumer can get good performance without paying a premium. Edit: It would have been nice if you talked about what kind of chipset this is compatible with. This wouldn't look so great if you need to pair it with a high end motherboard.
@jmanig76

It’s like all other Matisse CPUs, you need either a flashed B450 or an X570 for now. B550 are supposed to come out later in the year that will bridge that gap.
@photonboy999

CHIPSET/BIOS-> Pretty sure he mentioned that in terms of AM4 BIOS compatibility. most or all AM4 motherboards have supported these CPU's going back to the July and August BIOS updates of 2019 when the 3000 series launched. That includes B320 boards so even cheap-ass $50 boards support this out of the box. TURBO-> meh, probably not the best analogy. Turbo increased performance but it was an addon that often stressed the engines beyond what their original designs aimed at so you often prematurely wore out your engine.

Aleksander Eh, I’m no Intel fanboy but 1st gen Ryzen was not really the killer app that 2nd gen is turning out to be and that 3rd gen likely will be. At the same time understand that right now Intel is trying to play catch up and keep market share, so they’re rushing what they have out the door so that they have “new” hardware on the market at the same time as AMD. Intel is still a huge company with a lot of money. Don’t think they aren’t working on SOMETHING behind closed doors. If they’re not then they’re complete retards. I think the CPU market is going to yield some pretty crazy shit within the next 2-3 years and I’m curious to see who it is that manages it, AMD with the many cores or Intel with the very fast single core.

It makes viewport previews load faster in Blender but thats about it. so now I do one 1080 ti and one 980 ti and its great for rendering. Had to get a 1080 ti for my new 4k 144Hz monitor. 980 Ti could only do 98Hz on the display port.

*MAYBE NOT?* Do you know how to estimate how much performance you are losing without a better CPU? It's quite easy. Use any tool that allows you to show the GPU Usage (MSI Afterburner or whatever it's called now, or EVGA's PrecisionXOC... now run your game without VSYNC running (so you don't impose an FPS cap). If the GPU USAGE shows at 95% then there's little to no benefit to getting a better CPU. If the GPU USAGE is 80% then you might gain up to roughly 25% more performance with a better CPU. In other words just take (100%)/(X%) which in this case is 100%/80% = 1.25 *There's more than just the AVERAGE FPS so a better CPU might improve game smoothness and/or allow you to do other tasks at the same time but as an approximation that's the easiest way to do it. **Note the "CPU USAGE" amount does not work at all the same way. Your GPU will run up to as high as 100% as long as you simply remove the other bottlenecks such as CPU or storage (usually the CPU). But game code isn't threaded the same way so you can be bottlenecked on a 12-core CPU in some games when the game only reports 30% usage. Sometimes more and sometimes less. But again, looking at "GPU USAGE" tells you how much your CPU is bottlenecking your GPU. Looking at "CPU USAGE" tells you very little in that regard.

I think I might use one of these with an AIO and a 2060 ko ultra or whatever it's called. Maybe like... 32 GB of RAM for giggles and some SSDs for a living room gaming PC. I'm thinking like $1000 gaming PC not including peripherals this would be a great mid range gamer.

Weird ppl are so upset by 3 years making a difference in performance/cost. It's how it goes. I have a 7700k but it's not like I'll go buy a newer cheaper cpu because it matches or slightly surpasses mine. It's great that a new pc gamer with a budget can get the same performance as I did for just over 1k for my build a few years ago
@cosminmilitaru9920
@cosminmilitaru9920 4 года назад
Yup, it was the same when we switched from single-core to dual-core and some had expensive single-cores, then from dual to quad-core. Only difference was the 5-6 years before AMD finally made Ryzen to compete, and force intel to really make new stuff. It's a good thing that didn't last forever. And I highly doubt you or anyone else would HAVE to change the 7700K OCed. Also no one speaks about latency, intel is king on that, and most likely as usual the 7700K would not require 3600MHz ram low-latency to have a good memory latency, so it's more snappy, even in games.
