The next time you have a guest who makes you feel judged under your own roof, please ask them to clarify what they mean by "is that all you do". We usually go to my DIL’s bakery (where sometimes we run into my son) but also will head to a mom & pop cafe for a full meal. This has helped our bond grow even stronger. So, start by taking your daughter’s out for on-on-one time. They will come to cherish those moments. Ah... The baby chick fever. Been there done that. Chickens were neat To have and raise and I'm glad I had that experience, but they were so much work! Some advice: Prefab coops are usually too small for chickens. Chickens get sick easily and if they don't get sick and die they end up getting eaten by a predator. Most vets do not treat chickens and if they do they are classified as an exotic pet and will cost you more. You basically have to be your own chicken doctor. Chickens are loud and messy. They poop everywhere. Hens sing a song when they lay eggs and rooster crow anytime they want to not just at sunrise. Some other issues: dealing with frostbite on the chickens combs and wattles in the cold winter months and dealing with their water freezing. In the summer they can get heat stroke and die. Take it from someone who raised chickens, don't get them especially if you don't eat eggs and don't plan on selling eggs or raising chickens to eat. There are easier things to do in the homestead hobby than raise chickens. ;)
@TheFractalStorySpinner
@TheFractalStorySpinner 4 месяца назад
Here's what I always think about keeping chickens, or any livestock: who will take care of them when you leave? Seriously. You can't drop a bunch of chickens off at your vet for boarding. If you don't like eggs, does your family? Are you planning to eat those chickens? Isn't it easier to just pick up a dozen eggs when you need them and get nicely packaged chicken thighs at the store? Are you prepared to deal with the cost of keeping chickens? In summer they can scratch for bugs and what not, but you're in Canada! What happens in the winter? I mean chicken feed ain't chicken feed, know what I mean? And you have to protect them from the elements. And predators. You're in the country. Are there foxes, coyotes, wolves, bears? Sasquatch? You may find out that there are at the worst moment. Are you planning a cottage industry to sell the eggs? Check the local food selling regs. Hmmm...Gosh, don't you have enough going on with being a firefighter, and your amazing YT channel and having had an HGTV show? I told my husband about that and seriously, we're both fangirlling you for it. You will be in the best shape of your life and you've got that big textbook to learn...Have I talked you out of the chicken thing yet? (By the say, I once had a friend who became a chicken farmer. She went from city slicker to chicken farmer...It's work. Really hard work.) BTW, I'm 65 and just now starting classes for my PhD. You go girl, in all you want to do! But maybe the chicken thing...uh...no.

Very nice video Cass 💛 For chickens it is not authorized in all cities, there are standards (such as a maximum number of chickens, health standards, etc.). My colleague had chickens and it's surprisingly a lot of maintenance and still expensive, you have to feed them, clean them, maintain the enclosure, we are in Canada you have to remember that in the fall/winter/spring the chickens have to had a heated place, that we cannot skip a day without feeding them, therefore more complicated travel etc. I sincerely believe that with everything you do and work (which is incredible), this is a lot of extra work 😅 in my humble opinion perhaps taking it all more relaxed during your free time would perhaps be better, for now 💛🙂

Cass, I adore you, so I am going to point out that you are (what my family and I refer to as) "hyper-oojamaflipping" - doing all the "things", with increasing velocity. In ADHD it happens because of our constant need to manually restock our dopamine levels. Each time those levels start to settle (cos let's face it, contentment isn't stimulating), we feel the need for a new high. We (our family) pull each other up because we have all experienced the inevitable crash that comes with too much fun. It feels and looks AMAZEBALLS all the way to burnout. You actually helped me rein it in a little and keep a lid on it. One very precious piece of advice you have given us recently is to always leave 20% free space. I apply that rule now to my time and money. As for chickens, homesteading looks so glamorous -but it comes with many caveats. No warm sleep-ins (ever), chicken mites making their way into your furnishings (they bite us), some awful sounds at the crack of dawn, and the poop -everywhereee if you free range, and the stench of it is an absolute assault. If you don't even like eggs, I can think of no worthy reason to put yourself through it. Get a goat or something. Stay awesome Cass -one oojamaflip at a time!

Your printable and ebook is so helpful for identifying the areas to focus on, Thank you! As for chickens... it is all pretty simple until a chicken gets sick or stops laying or is a rooster (if you can only allowed to keep hens in your city). I kept backyard chickens for 9 years and during that time i had 3 flocks. Hens have 2 good laying seasons and one okay season and then their egg production drops off, but they still take your time, attention, and resources. Having a plan for rehoming them or processing them for soup is importnat... or dedicating yourself to having them for life (7-10) years, even if most of the time they are not producing eggs. I'm glad to be past the season of raising chickens. We moved on to kitty/cat fostering afterwards and did that for 7 years (52 kittens/cats over the 7 years).. We no longer do that anymore either. We're into simplifying now.

Maybe just have regular visits to chicken farms and talk to farmers about maintenence if that's a possibility for you? I also feel like if your property turns into a lake every now and then that may be dangerous for the chickens too. We had a hobby farm growing up (in Ontario) with horses, bunnies, pigs (at one point), ducks and for a brief moment we did have chickens. My mom was maintaining everything and because I was allergic to everything I just got the benefit of seeing things kinda at a distance. My mom loved the ducks that would swim in our pond, but hated the chickens and found them "dirty" in her words. Chicks are cute, but they grow up. Maybe you don't have to have everything and do all of the things. 🤷‍♀️ Maybe that's another way to make new friends, go to farms or petting zoos and meet new people with similar interests. Alternatively duck chicks are also really cute and ducks are beautiful. We did have lots of preditors like foxes and things come to visit and eat the ducks occasionally, but that may be another thought if you want a nice chicken substitute.

@ldmatheson quails are cute. We had friends who had those on their farm. I just worry about coops on Cas' property. I know she said it only floods once a month, but you'd have to make a shelter for them far from the flooded area and because she lives in Canada she might want to look into a heated shelter. We had a barn.

My dad had a chicken rescue. Some personal problems at home and he is being forced to get rid of some of them. It is a lot of work, but the eggs are worth it (taste better than store bought, to me). It also helps alleviate some of the stress - he can go out back and just watch the chickens roam around the yard and peck at the ground. The one downside is that his backyard doesn't have much grass anymore. If you do decide to go this route, you can always get a moveable chicken coop and move it around your yard.

I am struck at a, how these all involve SMALL steps (one dollar, 15 mins exercise, small tidy-up) and b, how interrelated they are! Ride a bike, and you are improving your mental and physical health, saving money, and building relationships if you're with friends and family! (Plus helping the environment if that's part of your identity/ values.) Organize your cupboards and fridge, and you're blessing your home, saving money by planning meals and not wasting food, improving your diet and health, and probably spending more family time around a dinner table! Family tidy up promotes togetherness, improves mental health, and burns calories! Some activities are a a quadruple-whammy but there are probably some which hit even more life-improvement-spots. What a great topic to discuss, and again you break it down in an easily digestible manner. Very nice work, Cass!

I love my chickens 💕 They are so worth it. Get the chickens!!!! They are not a ton of work and they eat bugs and ticks. They bring joy. We let ours free range during the day and lock them up at night. I do not have a rooster. We got rid of our rooster and me and the hens are all happier!

Good for you. I've heard too many stories of people keeping their rooster that is either aggressive towards people or rough on the hens But they don't realize how much better it is without him. I'm very lucky to have a very chill rooster who is good with his ladies and nice to people. ❤

Hi ! I've known your channel for a few days and, well, better late than never 😅. Obviously, we have a few things in common, including being a mother with ADHD and we were both diagnosed late (which I understood by watching a few videos but I may be wrong). I am 42 years old and was diagnosed only a year and a half ago. What opposes us is that you are a queen of tidying up and organization while I have chaos in my life and in my house. 😆 Seeing someone like you gives me hope and motivation💪. I tell myself that your tips and tricks will surely suit me much more than all the tidying gurus on RU-vid. So I will watch your videos religiously, take note and try to adapt it to my home. Many thanks for sharing this.❤ Big hug from a little French woman.😊

Ah, Life coaching pie charts. I never really enjoyed using this type of chart (I am a certified life coach). Loved seeing your family pictures! Aw. Are you really a hair twirler?? I also tell people to search out clubs and groups. They exist! I am in a workout group with other moms, and it is fun! I have other groups I am in too that have to do with my passions and interests. I hope you are able to find people you can connect with. It is said that most women struggle to make new friends. Loved what you said on finances! So good! I love that you said that things rewire your brain. I have been telling people how rewiring is so possible and attainable, and I love that you used the term too. Hope you have many people who use your big five!

P.S. If you have chickens, you will have to do a lot of initial work. My brother had 5 chickens (one recently passed) and he goes home at a certain time every day to feed them and care for them as if they are his children. He doesn't go on vacations because he wants to care for them, which I think he can find someone to watch them without an issue. I think chickens are great for saving money on eggs, but if you can't keep up with keeping the coop clean and having the ability to not obsess over them, while being okay to hire someone to care for them if you go away, then go for it.

CHICKENS! Omg I'm with you. My fantasy self is a huge homesteader. I just keep telling myself that it's a huge lie. I have a black thumb. I know nothing about animals or food preservation. I'm on a chicken FB group, and I've seen all the sicknesses they can get; not to mention what they can do to each other if they're jealous or don't make friends... it truly is a fantasy life... in my head. And I still want it. Good luck, Cass! If you find the secret to changing your fantasy self, make a video on that, and you'll be a millionaire.

On the topic of money, I think it's important to note that sometimes the answer IS to increase your income, rather than cut your spending. There is literally no place in the United States where a full-time minimum wage income will afford a one-bedroom apartment. If you find that you can't afford your needs (shelter, food, clothes, medicine, utilities), then the answer isn't to figure out which of those needs you can cut, it's trying to figure out how to get more income.

We have two adorable fluffy butt silkie chickens. (Rooster and a hen) Love! Huge organic food bag lasts almost a year! Give food scraps too. And free range some during day. They’re a hoot! Easy. Only thing is cleaning out their housing here and there. Putting new bedding (wood shavings etc) 🐓 the silkie eggs are small too. We don’t eat much eggs but usually an egg and potato Sunday brunch once or twice a month. 🥚

Hi Cassandra ! Thank you for the e-book and this video that presents it well. :) Forget about the chickens ! It is a lot of work, messy, smelly, not fun to clean up and not worth it especially if you don't like eggs ! Plant some organic flowers and enjoy the wild bees and birds and butterflies build a bee hotel and bird houses, all kind of natural shelters for small animals and let them feed themselves out of your garden. That way, you can enjoy them but will not have extra work to do nor money to spend on food. If you want to see or pet cute animals, go visit a neighbour or a farm once in a while.
