Electrifying boats is enormously important but not always as straightforward as electrifying cars as water creates much more drag than air. To avoid using big batteries, companies need to explore alternative ways to make boats more efficient in order to maximise range. In Stockholm, Sweden that's exactly what the team at Candela have been doing, borrowing some old hydrofoil technology and blending it with super sophisticated sensor systems to make its flagship C-8 electric speedboat that is not only hyper efficient and zero emissions, but also FLIES! Having recently partnered with Geely's Polestar, could Candela really take off? Imogen went to visit the team to find out!

I spent fifty years in high tech product development. From consumer electronics, to marine equipment and NASA management. This boat, although not introducing anything particulary new, is the perfect integration of complimentary tech. Wonderful. Foils, electric drive, it was a marriage that had to wait for the right time. And that time is now. Kudos.

I do have one small criticism. In applications where one needs greater range, this system, although it makes it easier to adopt batteries, doesn't fundamentally support batteries as the prime power unit. It would be more cost effective at low intensity to install an equivalent power diesel generator with Rolls-Royce style baffling. That said, it is still fantastic engineering and it does at least lower the performance envelope for batteries to be installed at more reasonable weights and volumes.

Makes you wonder what the minimum spec is for getting up on the foils since the wake is definitely going to be less at that speed than just dribbling along at 5 knots in "boat mode", which is a common speed limit in wake limited areas.

Absolutely, a normal power boat at those speeds makes conversation a very shouty affair. The other thing was that her hair was almost still. The windscreen design on that boat is super clean to have so little turbulence at the control position.

As a stick and rag sailor, I love it when other people bomb around in hydrofoil boats... no wake! They can do 30 knots right past you and if you didn't look, you wouldn't have known. They also don't damage the river banks, upset or drown juvenile water fowl, imperil moorings and moored boats, or damage mariners. Compare that to certain boghammer owners who seem to delight in "making their presence felt" and come racing by and leave you bouncing hard enough to make the ancient mariner puke. So, let's have more hydrofoils! This could be an example of using technology to design out the opportunity for certain sociopaths to behave badly in public, whether they like it or not. *I know boghammer isn't the term. I call the particular speed boat drivers who behave like idiots 'boghammer drivers' because of the association with the antics of the Iranian Republican Guard, cross-channel people-traffickers, drug smugglers and similar low life who work to make other people miserable.

The team seems extremely compenent by coming up with a product like this. It's amazing: a small group of intelligent people come together and boom, an amazing electric boat emerges from seemingly out of thin air. >100 boats in 8 months at EUR 290,000 ex. VAT is over EUR 29 million in revenue! They selected their market so well with a very compelling product.

What I find coolest about these hydrofoil boats is that... This simply isn't possible with petrol engines! ICE hydrofoil boats exist, obviously, but they are a lot more complex and expensive, because they need to keep the engine above the water while the foil operates a metre or more below. On the contrary, electric motors don't need air, so they can be put underwater, making them a lot smaller (the water itself is the cooling system), cheaper and more efficient. And you also get the added benefit of less noise and more stability. They truly show how electrification can be the answer to the questions we never dared to ask

love the boat but hydrofoils are not allowed on the Thames above the ferry. the engine is something i can see lots of british waterways clearing for use. if they could do one suitable for narrowboats they would go like hot cakes. the taxi engine thumping away is the only thing that spoils a trip on a narrowboat.

I'd considered narrowboat usage but dismissed it on the grounds of very low speed restrictions on UK canals; (might) be useful on EV surfboards in a canal situation and these are already on the market - see Electrek & Fully Charged Show's RU-vid channel videos.

@@pinkelephants1421 the Thames has different restrictions on everything from speed to prop type. it split up into different sections. above the ferry refers to the Woolwich ferry crossing. its one of the points the rules change. as i understand it and i could be way off. hydrofoils are not allowed beyond this point. as for the narrowboat i think a low speed prop set up for the motor shown could work well.

@@gz3zbz yep i know. but i didn't know about mothership marine. i'm going to give them a look. thanks. the problem with the ones i do know and i could be way out of date on this. is they are all working off the idea of just replacing the engine with an electric unit. you still have the prop drive system and so on. this unit setup would be way better. you could even set it up so you got directional thrust.

Superb combination of innovative engineering and product design. I was wondering about the pressure differential - to create the lift - spoken of only in terms of the angle of attack (effectively) . After getting up to speed, for minimal drag I think you'd want zero angle-of-attack and reliance on an aerofoil profile to generate the needed pressure difference. The 'wing' profiles certainly appeared to be aerofoil shaped.

A retractable rigid cockpit tonneau, that covered the entire seating area while the boat is waiting in its slip for the next outing, could be cheap, relatively low-efficiency solar panels that, low efficiency notwithstanding, would charge the batteries up over the multiple days between outings. Not many people use their boat every day; when you're running with only a couple of people aboard keeping the tonneau mostly deployed would probably also make a significant improvement on the vessel's aero drag (which cannot be ignored when talking about cruising speed and range) and further improve its performance.

Love the idea of hydrofoils. We (Canada) developed a sub-hunter hydrofoil in 1968 that could do 63 knots. Cancelled due to 'priority changes,' which usually means US interference. A twin hull design seems like a natural progression. My concern would be fishing nets, which make up a surprisingly large percentage of plastic waste in the ocean. Any plans to make the foils retractable?

Friend had a very expensive motor yacht or very large speed boat you could sleep in it, it shifted when you wanted it to. Now this was a good few years back but you could spend the day in the Loch it was in. If you went 20 miles in the days fun if felt like you had traveled far. The scary thing was you could watch the fuel gauge move on full power. In todays petrol prices ( yes they had to pay over the odds marina prices to use their pump) back then it burned through £100 in an afternoon and this was 15 plus years back and just thought wow that’s crazy in petrol you have to just accept your going back to put £100 in at the end of the afternoon. So I like this, it looks a fantastic toy to use on the water. More power to them if you forgive the pun. I’ve been around speed boats all my life they are poor on reliability akin to a classic car or at least they used to be so a more reliable boat - great. A clean boat not leaving a rainbow in the water welcome. PS Stockholm looks stunning.

Am I the only one to see 0:37 a Fully Charged logo designed on the water in the wake of the Candela? I have followed Candela for a while (since they presented the previous model in Cannes, a day boat), and I just love their product philosophy. Not much left to say about Imogen, she offers just the right mix of making tech accessible while still providing us geeks with the accuracy we need.

Whether you travel through air or water, power requirements are proportional to speed, a single horse can pull a car or boat. In fact it is probably easier to pull a canal barge than a truck. People are starting to produce electric canal boats and I believe that will accelerate when more marinas electrify berths and the EA put more charging points on the canal banks.

yep, I watched only as minute and got shocked by the statement that pushing through water takes more energy than pushing through air. This is obvious, but except military and smugglers and few scientists nobody uses submarines. Boats, even are pushing a little through water, still are going mostly through air, and are actually more efficient than planes. Sure, hidrofoils are more efficient. We had few passenger ones decades ago. I wonder why their use was discontinued.

We can cool citys worldwide with a couple easy to implement infrastructure. Parking lots take up 25 to 30% of land use in citys reduce this by 80%. Go up not out parking garages can have batteries on first floor and solar or wind or bolth on top. So the now freed up land can have native flowers bushes and trees to reduce heat flooding co2 and crime and increase o2 happiness and food if it gets planned of course. This will help cool citys wich will reduce energy demands because you will need to cool buildings less often than before.

@@waveman1500 It's 28 foot - nearly 9 metres - so probably not. most marina berths have a power supply so shouldn't be an issue for charging.

The "magic" ratio of water density to being mostly up in the air that allow this boat to be so efficient also works for human powered water propulsion. I am a long time member of the International Human Powered Vehicle Association which has been "flying" boats on the puny efforts of a single human faster than the fastest eight person Olympic style racing shell boats for decades now. A good human athlete can just about put out 1to 2 hp for enough time to get up on the foils and it takes 1/8th that to stay up. Our craft have used mechanical means to control the flying height, and body weight shift to compensate crosswise waves or to make the boat bank like an aircraft in turns. Of course we also have been using kevlar and carbon fiber technologies to achieve the lowest weight to structure sizes needed. See one of the winning boats from our competitions at the Boston museum of Science, If it is still hanging just inside the Atrium. The Decavitator was built and propelled by one of this country's best aerodynamicists Mark Drela

Hate to be one, but that would make an excellent Spec Ops infil boat. Paint it Vanta black and you could probably pass within 100 meters without being detected. Major heat source is under the water, so helps with IR detection. Extremely low maintenance.

Fabulous tech! Any idea how robust the foils are? If you were to hit a float (crab pot, net, log) ... What happens? In conventional outboard you may need to refurb a prop ... The hull may have a scrape or ding. How would one of the foils fare?

In the 1970s-80s, Boeing made the 929 Jetfoil ferry boat. It carries 200-300 people and runs at 45 knots. They sold 50-ish vessels, I rode on one in Seattle way back when. People always asked about hitting stuff, with all the trees that make it into those waters, but they never developed a sonar that would detect that sort of thing. The boat required a deep channel, so it could stop in an emergency. Several sharp maneuvers made the news, mostly for spilling drinks, but they claim there never had a vessel disabled by debris. You can't operate something like this with plants in the water, from a fouling and drag risk, and hitting a sandbar might be catastrophic. You'll want to keep to deep water, like Swedish Fjords.

@@davidf2281 Well, a conventional powerboat has less draft, and a V hull is much better at pushing things out of the way. The wake of a boat has functional effects, not just the negative drag effect.

If we are considering flying boats then there are lots of other tech that can cut energy use moving over water - ground effect seaplanes, hydrofoil ferries, air bubble hull surface effect water displacement, waterjet propulsion. While this small boat design can work elsewhere, its weight penalty due to batteries as well as the energy needed to get it up to speed preclude many heavier boats. Point to point ferries which avoid most bad sea states can work with batteries but many ferry routes must face extreme and unexpected sea conditions where weight, balance and propulsion power is paramount. It might work in easier routes like the Red Sea.

Amazing tech, love it and wish I could afford it :) Will it be offered with longer-range batteries, or does the packaging / weight to lift equation preclude this I wonder? Great article and lovely visuals of the boat flying over the water leaving little wake compared to the boat alongside.

I suggest this does not scale up well, at least not solely on battery power.
