Had a 2017 Forester, traded it in on a 2023 after it was involved in an accident. Loving it . Only reason hes getting 25 miles a gallon is because of the gearing in the wilderness. took ours on a short road trip of a few hundred miles and got between 36 and 41 miles per gallon.

Owned a '84 Subaru Hatchback, 1600cc, 4-speed manual, no A/C or radio (although I added them later), went 97,000+ miles, had to replace clutch, but otherwise it drove like a champ till I sold it for a station wagon. Now own a '22 Forester and am loving it and taking great care of it. I'm expecting it to last to at least 200,000 miles with me behind the wheel.

I owned a 2012 Outback with a 2.5L engine and a 6-speed manual. It got 30+mpg on the highway. I drove to ski in Colorado every weekend for years. I drove in all conditions. It never missed a beat. It got stuck once - I drove fast into a huge snow mound. The car got high centered and all 4 tires were off the ground. It took 5 minutes of digging to get one tire on pavement, then I was off and running.

I’m on my fourth Subi. My first was a 2014 Crosstrek. Kept it for 24,000 problem free miles, just didn’t like the 2.0’s lack of power it was a CVT with paddle shifters for manual mode. My second is a 2016 Forester automatic(non CVT) with 57,000 trouble free miles. Third was 2017 base WRX six seed manual. I had 27,000 miles on it, found motor oil in the turbo.traded it in on a 2021 Crosstrek sport. So far 22,000 miles trouble free. Power out of the 2.5 is good (no WRX), the only thing I am Leary of is the direct fuel injection. I have ran a induction cleaner at 10,000 miles, then installed a oil catch can. I drain it at every oil change(5,000 miles) and rarely get the motor oil milk shake. (Twice now at 27,000 miles). Love both cars. Living in Northern Idaho, snow, some mud and fire roads, both car do very well. We are happy with both cars…….. side note….. we DO miss our 07 FJ Cruiser 2WD with locking rear diff…..

I have a Forester Wilderness and I love it. Yes, the Wilderness trim has an EPA rating of 28 mpg on the highway vs 33 mpg for the other Foresters, but it's geared lower than the others. Which is why it can tow 3000 lbs vs 1500 lbs for the others. As for comfort, I drove mine from Alaska to Arizona and back and it was very comfortable. I'm 6' 2" and never felt uncomfortable. It's a great little SUV.

Subarus are well thought-out vehicles. My wife drives a 2017 Subaru Outback which we bought new and she loves it. It was better than the Chevy Equinox that we considered. My favorite car was the 1990 Plymouth Laser which I bought new. I would still be driving it if were not for it rusting away. I took it to the beach at Seaside Park at Long Island Sound everyday(even in the winter) . I gave my Laser to a friend in 2008 after I bought a 2008 Sebring Hardtop convertible, which I still drive. The Laser had a little more the 225,000 miles. It never had a problem except for rust. I consistently got 30 mi./gal. The Sebring now has 192,500 miles. The only problem was the oil pump had to be replaced at 150,000 miles. BTW, Scotty, 3 car mechanics could not figure out the problem, even one at the Chrysler dealership. You were the only one among them who properly diagnosed the problem. I owe you a big thanks because it was cheaper to get it replaced than getting a new engine or a new car.

I am one who changes engine oil and transmission fluid well before the recommended mileage, I thought I was going to have few problems with my wife's 2013 Impreza Sport. However, the valve control body on the Subaru cvt went bad on the Impreza Sport at 174,000 KM's (just outside of the 160,000 KM's warranty period) and cost $2,700 to replace. She drove the car very conservatively without putting a lot of stress on the cvt . I don't trust the subaru now as the dealer who did the work only gave a 1 year or 20,000 KM warranty on the replacement valve body. Given the experience with the valve body I don't think I would buy another Subaru.

That one was priced almost to where it was just as well to get a brand new one which I did. So far I love it. Mine is the Forester sport in blue. I always bought GM products before this and as much as I did like them, i can see the more I look at my Forester that it is a more quality product. I did look at the Toyota Rav4, the Honda CR-V, my Forester, the Chevy Equinox and the Hyundai Tuscan. Liked the Forester the best of all. Comfortable seat, ride, and I could get everything I wanted for the price I had in mind.

I've had my Forester since 2014, year model 2009 with manual transmission and driven 166 000 miles. It's a turbo diesel with 147 hp, much better than the gasoline engine that doesn't have that much torque. It's been a great all around car and must say that I fell in love with it😅 It hasn't had any bigger issues so far. I change the engine oil and filter sooner than recommended though. With icy and snowy roads here in Finland and having Subaru's awd one doesn't need to worry if there's snow up to your knees on your driveway in the morning when you're going to work. 😅They don't have the diesel model in US do they?

In the snow AWD will help you get moving but snow tires will help you stop & turn. I suggest both AWD & snow tires if you drive in snow. If I can't control my car once it's moving I'd rather not move.

Loving my Outback Wilderness. Ground clearance of a 4 Runner. Quick, comfortable, spacious no nonsense. AWD system incredible Never get stuck. If when things need replacing, wont cost arm and a leg to repair either which is nice. Nice review here.

The model you were looking at is the Wilderness, Subarus more "off-Roady" Forrester. They are good for more rugged fire roads (I would not be rock crawling in it). However, to climb hilly dirt roads better, they have a higher final drive gear, which gives it great off the line acceleration, but it comes at the cost of lower MPG's. The other Foresters have around 33 MPG on the highway. As far as CVTs are concerned, I have a 14 Outback and 18 Crosstrek and those CVTs work great (but I prefer the manual, they just have a better feel and the AWD is pure mechanical).

Toyota and Subaru are cousins. The companies are somewhat related, since Toyota partly owns Subaru. Hence, technology sharing between them.

We bought a new 2020 the wife love it. The CVT is chain drive and not a belt. You don’t get that rubber band effect like with the older Toyota’s or the Nissan’s.

I'm 6'5" built line a linebacker and couldn't fit into a Rav4 Highlander or GrandHighlander.....Tried the Forrest.....great ease getting in an out but the telescopic steering was too short with the seat all the way back.....The Outback fit like a glove and got that but prefer the boxier design of the Forrester......if Subaru made the Forrest 9" longer and longer telescopic steering, it would be the perfect car for tall guys like me. I just hope mine lasts

You nailed it. I have a 2011 forester I bought at 90,00 miles. Now has 106,000 miles and the engine has to be removed to hopefully fix the oil leaks. $2200. What a crappy way to do things. And the transmission seal leaks. At least that is only $250. Never again.

At 1:38 he says; "Their downfall { Subaru engine } is, as these engines get older, they leak oil because they don't use gaskets, they use glue. That dries up and then the engine leaks. Then you have to PULL THE ENGINE OUT AND CHANGE THEM.... This can begin around 100,000 miles". And at 3:38 he says; "The Toyota CVT's { transmissions } are much superior to these." .... .... So ... Subaru Engines and transmissions are worse than Toyota's and you might have to pull the Subaru engine out at 100,000 miles and your transmission will always be far worse than a Toyota, even when it's brand new. Also, Subaru's have less reliability than Toyota's, cost more to maintain, depreciate faster and have thousands less in resale value. So... how are they better than a Toyota? At 2:48 he says: "Only if you lease them or throw them away at 100,000 miles."

I heard several reasons not to buy this superpoop. If you’re going into heavy snow, don’t buy it. If you’re going off~road, don’t buy it. If you’re going to tow anything more than groceries, don’t buy it. Got it. Will stick with my 4runner.

Apparently, when toyota and Subaru were in a conglomeration years ago, toyota has pretty much been allowed to copy Subaru awd, and improve on it. At least that's what my brother in law, who is a supervisor at a toyota plant, told me a few years ago. Still keeping My toyota though. 😊

I personally wouldn't ever buy a Subaru with an N/A 4 cylinder. I had an 05 WRX back in the day and it was a hoot to drive! My brother had an Impreza and outback. Both cars felt like they couldn't get outta their own way. Insanely slow for me, but maybe feels alright for others.

My wife and I are on our 4th Subaru. Amazing snow cars. Our latest Subaru is a 2014 Outback with 107,000 miles. We change the oil and filter every 5,000 miles. I doesn't burn oil, never needs topping up. My only beef with it is the CVT. I hate the power delivery. Don't pull out into fast traffic with it. I'm hoping with their friendship with Toyota that maybe they'll wake up and go with a Toyota type of CVT.......or go back to a real transmission

The only trouble with Subaru is that they are ripping American customers off ...the cars are built in USA , Indiana ...... I saw on the web the other day that a Canadian guy bought a Subaru built in Indiana , it was shipped to Canada , and he was able to buy it using Canadian dollars ...and the bottom line was that he got the car for over $ 6000.oo USA dollars cheaper then what Subaru is charging USA customers .... all the carmakers are hell bent on ripping off USA customers
