Jason Whipple of Rotiform Wheels had a simple idea for his 1980 Volkswagen Scirocco: build a fun track car that could be driven home after a day of driving. What he ended up building was a little different. This Scirocco is powered with help from a USF3 racing engine, has a full roll cage, and one of the coolest paint jobs we’ve ever seen.

Singo Sango and going straight at the first corner? Do you have any idea how an heavy V8 in the front affects the driveability of an stripped “small car”.....even a “light” vr6 in a golf mk1 is to heavy for a corner. Like said in the video look up Some berg hill climb videos and you know directly why the use mostly small atmosferic 4 cilinders. Couple of years ago i tried a couple of times to beat a stripped mk1 g60 with about the same horsepower with a stock BMW E39 M5 with 400hp. At arround 110mph i started to gain on him. Thats what weight does to a car.

180hp in a Scirocco with how light it is ... that's already squirrelly as fuck. Much more and it'd basically be undriveable in anything but a straight line, making it useless for a hill climb. As it sits you'll easily be chirping the tires shifting into 3rd.

My favorite car ever! I owned 4 of them although my favorite was my metallic light blue Scirocco S 1981 model. Had a big valve motor from an 84 GTI with a bit of a cam and a full exhaust system from the head back. It revved to the moon and did 90 mph in 3RD gear at about 7600 rpm, I learned later that the rod bolts would stretch causing failure so I kept it below 7000. I think I just came in my pants. Currently own an 86 Audi coupe GT that is all original, to me it is the big brother of the Scirrocco but they are different monsters! SIGH!

Considering that engine stock made 220 hp at 9000 rpm and 12.5:1 compression and he had it built with special pistons at 14.4:1 compression that doesn't make sense.

Maybe not. I'm no expert, but those engines had to have been built specifically with a light weight in mind. As a result, I would think that the engine would weigh significantly less than the stock engine. This would aid in the balance of the vehicle. Further, it looks like it opens a significant work area around the engine block that would make it easy to access from nearly any direction. Wouldn't mind having one of those engines for a Miata build one day.

My dad had a white 1980 Scirocco when he first came to the US from Austria. My brother and I thought it was a race car, no idea it only had 90hp, nor cared. We rode in the back of that thing all over, got to shift it once in awhile riding up front. But the reason i mention were the mag wheels on that car with the square holes looked great! Would love to see this build have wheels based on those originals - would look great!

I love the car. I would have gone a different way visually but what is cool is the fact that it is art. It has a one of a kind look. When you take something mechanical a part and start over its art. The planning, matching, and fabrication done is an artistic endevor that results in an experience you end up feeling physically and emotionally instaed just a visual experience.

I'm a Volvo fan. I had a 1985 240 DL wagon that I tore down and rebuilt using nothing original. It had a 1.4L Turbo motor from a 2008 V40, reprogramed managment electronics, Ford 5spd trans, Corvette suspension, Subaru interior and more. Nothing original. So as a former creator of car art I can a better appreciate this one.

its an F3 car not as intense as F1 and they're expected to use engines based off of normal cars you see everyday and since the cars are all using the same engine more or less, it boils down to driver skill

I miss my scirocco. I bought an 86 in near great shape. freshened it all up to factory spec and sold it within a day of listing it. Obviously I think I listed it too cheap but I did more than triple my investment so I was happy lol. But I miss that car so much. All black. Very unique and fun to drive. They only thing I didn’t like about the roccos is the body roll but that’s easily addressed with better suspension upgrades.

I would have made it rear wheel drive and slapped a Audi turbo 20v I-4 from a Audi RS3.

It's so simple yet so nice to have a car where the wheels just look like they are in the right place. Getting low is all good unless your car starts looking like it's wearing diapers.
