China’s Rocket Force arsenal is regarded as the crown jewel of the People’s Liberation Army. In recent years, the secretive Chinese military unit has test-launched more ballistic missiles than the rest of the world combined. All American bases in the Asia-Pacific, including Guam, are within range of precision missiles from the Chinese mainland.
WSJ looks at how China’s Rocket Force is preparing for a possible invasion of Taiwan and deterring the U.S. from intervening.
Chapters:

4:26 Hitting Taiwan
5:43 Challenges for the U.S.

Maybe Russia shouldn't have invaded half of its neighbors. You don't join a defensive alliance for nol reason and Russia has given plenty of reasons: Wars of aggression, civilian massacres, shooting down civilian airliners, bombings of civilians, supplying chemical weapons to dictators. The list is endless. Of course everybody wants to join a defensive alliance against a dictator like Putin who will happily have tens of thousands of civilians murdered for no real reason.@@Dead4ev1

That makes no sense. If that is the case, the U.S. would have already attacked China back when it had a way larger weaponry advantage with that logic, but that never happened. You are manipulating the situation to make it something it isn't. The recent test launches surrounding Taiwan also proves that this is not why China is building launch sites. Duh! Nice try though.

It has to do with the current world order. The US has been on top of that world order economically and militarily. Yes, every country has a right to defend itself. There is a reason why the US is considered the world police and invests so much in its military capabilities worldwide. The US is on top, meaning greater political and economic power. It has a vested interest in keeping things the way things are. Ensuring peace not only controls the world order, it allows for economic development and trade that the US can guide and profit from. Its not only the US, but the other wealthy nations. It also relates to the ideology that is followed in the world. China does not follow a Democratic government. It does not venerate individual rights and freedoms that Democracies as institutions are built to do. I would agree that there is argument against the US Democratic institution as well. However, the guiding principals are still in force, where they seem illusory at best in China. The guiding leader of the world matters. While it is beneficial to those in power, it directs the development of other nations around the world as they mimic and adopt best practices in governing - currently Democratic practices. I believe Taiwan follows the same political dogma as the US - Democratic and Capitalist. The US retains its moral authority not through strength alone, but through the support and cultivation of individual rights in other free (Individual rights, Democratic) nations. I admire the ingenuity and adaptation that China has managed in the recent decades. I don't admire their tyranny of government. Taiwan is about more than Taiwan. It likely unlocks the Pacific Ocean for China, which means military and trade power. It is also a battle of ideals on the world stage.

@@combtop As a well informed American I can say you are either extremely naive or a paid troll. We preach democracy but we really only practice tokenism. We have preselected candidates and weed out all those who don't follow the mold. Taiwan is no democracy now nor has it ever been one. Just because you go through the circus of holding election doesn't mean you have any say on what policy takes place. A simple google search and quick read into the state department clearly states in the One China Policy that Taiwan is a part of China, and its up to them to decide with their cross straight relations.

I think because China has said it plans to 'reunify' Taiwan, through diplomacy 'if possible' but that they will use military means if necessary. Taiwan, based on their most recent election, doesn't want to reunify with China diplomatically anytime soon. China has spent the last 10 years building up its military at an accelerated rate, has told the PLA to be ready to invade Taiwan by 2027 if intelligence agencies are to be believed, using cyber warfare to steal secrets to benefit both private businesses as well as the government, and regularly harasses countries and their ships throughout the South China Sea and has done this for 2 decades or more, with it intensifying in recent years. The adoption of the One China policy by the United States, a key component of President Richard Nixon's foreign policy, was formalized in the 1972 joint communiqué with the People's Republic of China (PRC). This policy, characterized by its strategic ambiguity regarding Taiwan, marked a significant shift in Sino-American relations. In the communiqué, the United States recognized the Chinese assertion that there is only one China, which includes Taiwan, but did not explicitly endorse this view. Instead, the United States acknowledged it and emphasized its interest in a peaceful resolution to the Taiwan question. Nixon's 1972 visit to China and the ensuing communiqué were crucial in establishing a new phase of engagement between the two nations.

I am a very proud American here but people don't realize we literally have no experience against modern/superpowers. We have never faced a country with an air force, navy, or true military. As of recently, we have ONLY fought against third-world countries where we have an immense advantage. Any country would look good fighting against third-world countries lol. We literally spent 22 years struggling to control a country that only had 1991 Toyota Tacomas lol. With that said, people don't realize how out of date our equipment and navy are... we have immense issues with the new fighter jets and in fact, NONE of our fighter jets has a kill against another fighter jet. We love bragging about our success 70 years ago. Completely irrelevant. There's a reason why our equipment and tactics don't work in Ukraine like they did in Afghanistan. We're talking about Russia a superpower and Afghanistan a third-world country. The point is, we shouldn't get too cocky with no true relevant experience. Bragging about success 70 years ago is pointless. Our advantages 70 years ago do not apply to today.

A lot of people are pointing out the recent report of mismanagement of the rocket force. I just want to point out that we don't know reliability of the source of those reports nor do we have much indication of how widespread the problems are. Even if only half of the missiles work, that's still a lot of missiles.

Add to that shell game confusion over which silos have lids that won't open or which missiles contain water instead of rocket fuel. You don't want to underestimate an adversary but you don't want to create unnecessary fear by overestimating either.

Turned out you don’t have propellant in liquid fuel missiles when they are not active, cause it would degrade the fuel tank over time. So them having water in them wouldn’t make any sense, they should be empty. So it was probably some bad managed propoganda for people who don’t know stuff

The DF 26 is a major threat to islands like Guam and other military bases. However, a moving aircraft carrier in maximum surge speed during evasive maneuvers is going to be extremely difficult to hit. The Pacific ocean is absolutely massive, you will need a constantly updating killchain to accurately target an aircraft carrier moving at maximum surge speed. Even if it was possible to accomplish that with a satellite, the US has demonstrated that they can destroy satellites, so it would be impossible for them to maintain a killchain to destroy an aircraft carrier. However, stationary military bases, that's another thing entirely. Though, they would have to send a lot of missiles to overburden the missile defense.

With Trident II D5LE and upcoming Sentinel and LRSO, US has a better strategic edge. Moreso now B-21 Raider begins low rate initial production. What US lacks however is a conventional rocket force. However US too had a formidable one in the 1980s with Pershing II. It’s the 1st ever maneuverable hypersonic ballistic missile. DF-21/YJ-21 are based on the same tech. Pershing II was actually operational for about a decade before being forcefully retired due to the INF Treaty. They wouldn't have this problem if Reagan hadn't signed the said treaty. Regardless they are bringing it back or a derivative of it with US Army’s new LRHW (Long Range Hypersonic Weapon) and USN’s CPS (Conventional Prompt Strike). Both use a common hypersonic glide body (C-HGB) and has reached 2775+km almost doubling the range of older Pershing II and with a terminal speed of Mach 17 as shown on initial 2020 test. There are videos of it on X formerly twitter. US Army received its 1st LRHW prototype battery since October 2021. “Today marks an important milestone in equipping our nation’s first hypersonic battery,” said Lt. Gen. L. Neil Thurgood. A 2nd battery is in the works for 2025 and a 3rd one for 2027. 1st battery is currently deployed at Cape Canaveral to undergo personnel training and field testing though no successful launch yet. It is also light enough to be carried by a C-17 Globemaster. Once landed it can launch its missile similar to M142 HIMARS. Japan already agreed to host them. On the other hand Zumwalt class destroyers already started its modifications this year removing its guns so that it can accommodate a larger VLS able to house CPS. It will also be carried by the upcoming Virginia class Block V subs by 2028.
