Thank you for this video. It is so important to remember NOT to connect a computer to the Internet when you are not familiar with it. This includes PCs that clients ask me to work on, family members, etc. You never know what is on the PC waiting to phone home.

If you buy a used pc, always a good practice to do a clean install of the os. Even if you log in as long as you aren’t seeing what he did, go to settings and into the recovery area and do a reset from there and tell it not to keep anything. At the very least. But definitely good practice not to connect to the internet before you know.

Back in the early 00s I used to be employed by a local computer repair shop and once in a while we encountered similar things on computers we were asked to repair/fix. Back then the local police departments usually didn't even have an IT department with investigators trained in computer forensics, so we very rarely heard back after we contacted police and/or dropped the hardware off with them. I think in most cases the computers just went into an evidence locker and were never investigated.

Something I suggest doing is updating the UEFI with an image from the OEM. It is increasing common to do stealth firmware into the hardware and the only way to be certain is to updating all hardware such as SSD, UEFI and even the GPGPU. Sounds paranoid but it is possible, especially now that Windows doing trusted boot at bare metal level.
@charleshines2142
@charleshines2142 10 месяцев назад
One thing I don't like about Windows is that it updates the firmware of a lot of motherboards. How do I know where it came from? Also I don't want anyone messing with something that can easily brick my system if something goes wrong. What do you think they would say if they broke your system with a bad flash or one that somehow did not go well? Good luck getting them to pay for what they did to your computer. Then if you ever have Bitlocker enabled there are a lot of people who found themselves locked out of their files and just plain out of luck. I also don't care for all of the telemetry and stuff in Windows. Then if you had a computer with all of that filth on it and connected it to the internet there is software in Windows that was actually made by Microsoft to detect and report that content. I suspect it is built into Defender since it is always scanning files and it is not possible to remove it from Windows. I actually had an copy of Windows XP that did not have it. That was before Microsloth started forcing their man in the middle we know as Defender on us. Most people would never think of it as that. They think antivirus is good, after all no one wants a virus or something similar. The fact is some of the security and antivirus suites are worse than the malware they were supposed to stop.
@geraldh.8047
@geraldh.8047 10 месяцев назад
It’s not „common“ but it’s a good idea nonetheless. Firmware is probably ancient in most of these and updating it is at least likely to remove malware that was integrated.

Also don't connect it to the internet without a fresh install of Windows or any other OS of your choice. Just make sure you can find the drivers for everything first since there is a way to export them if you can't. Usually it is odd little motherboard level things that you end up needing drivers for and picking the right one is sometimes harder than it should be. They might keep the whole computer just to do forensic stuff with it such as looking for accounts where the bad material may have came from and to try to figure out who distributed it.

It is cooler than most laptops because it has a better heatsink. Some laptops are very space constrained and so they don't always have cooling as great as it should be. I don't game on any laptops just for that specific reason. Even a gaming laptop will run hotter than a desktop just because there is not that much room for cooling. I really only use laptops for light stuff like web browsing and other mundane things.

It's advised to reformat the hard drive or SSD on every computer you receive as sellers may not always reformat the drive before selling it. Also, some sellers like STG Global and SJ Computers are including Kingfast SSDs which tend to fail. I would open the computer and check if the computer is using a name brand SSD. Other things to watch out for are the Wi-Fi adapter and the gaming keyboard and mouse. It seems sellers like STG Global and SJ Computers on Amazon, Walmart, and eBay are cheapening out on refurbished PCs by including poor quality components and that isn't the only problem. I've seen issues of customers receiving PCs that are different from the listing or not coming with things mentioned in the listing. For example, Austin Evans purchased an Alarco desktop that claimed to have a GTX 650 and Intel Core i5-2400 but it included a GTX 750 and Core i7-2600. I'm guessing whoever is selling computers is probably getting the cheapest SSD, Wi-Fi adapter, keyboard, and mouse and these cheap components could be the reason why these PCs tend to stop booting or why they're having Internet issues.

Most of the internal drives that I have encountered are from a manufacturer that I don't know. So, the best bet is to install a new SSD. SSD's and M drives need to be erased with the manufactures software. Many times commercial software for erasures will not properly address the issue of a clean wipe. When you do a wipe it’s recommended that the process is repeated three times. Had a program back in the day that worked on DOS drives that did the erasing and then filled the storage spots with all 0’s. Took a while but it was a DOD CERTIFIED software used by federal agencies. In your case it would have been easier to use a stun gun on the drive to fry it as much as possible, smack it with a sledge hammer and hit it again with the stun gun just for fun. Used this technique to dispose of old drives as well. Microwave ovens do a pretty good job at wiping chips and platens in a drive.

Sometimes it's better to just pull and destroy the drive and call it a day, unless it's a murder case, you can easily get wrapped up in a hot mess that isn't your problem. Just saying, it's great that your agency having jurisdiction is decent, but remember when you come to law enforcement with contraband, you subject yourself to scrutiny and end up with an involvement history in their RMS, for a $60 PC not even worth it. Judgement call on one's part. The risk with FB Marketplace is pretty high to get stolen stuff too.
