When in Seattle, I’d always wander down to First Ave and either stare through the windows or sneak in to the museum of PNW Woodworking (or some similar name.) The pieces were stunning and often fanciful. I’d wonder if I’d ever own something worthy of show. Now I own a piece that would be “best in show. “ in the years to come, I’m happy to share if you want to show Valence. It’s worthy. I love it. The pulls are perfect. The angles crazy and the grain right down my alley. The curves are plain ridiculous. Thanks Nick. This is better than i visualized. Can’t wait to hear those drawers click.
I know the place you are speaking of. Been in there many times myself. Truly a woodworshippers paradise. Congratulations on commissioning and now having Valence. It's gorgeous.
Refreshing to see an American carpenter and cabinet maker using traditional tools rather than simply relying on a table saw for every cut, dado and dovetail.
Over a year in place and the drawers still have that great “woosh.” Amazing because it sits in a 125 year old house with no A/C or humidity control. Technical virtuosity!
You kept saying “Love it or hate it…” doesn’t matter what people think about the finished piece, there is still respect for the creativity and the woodworking skills your slinging around! Loved it. Should be showcased in Fine Woodworking.
Just saw this for the first time. Dude! That's not furniture making. That's a piece of art! I've been doing this for a while and I found that project daunting. Well done sir, we'll done.
I don’t understand those people (and I’m frankly a bit suspicious of them) who don’t agonize over pulls, handles, and the like. That point where our hands are ‘intended’ to interact with any piece (studio bucket list build or shop storage drawers) are in some ways the hardest part of any project. I love it (this piece) and I’m always genuinely surprised and and caught in anticipation with any of your builds. I think you may be ‘that one guy’ on the yootoobz who fully pulls off pushing himself technically, tactically, and artistically every single time. It nice to see you struggle with your own self ❤🐐
The pulls have some of the best grain on the piece. Who does that? The video doesn’t do their beauty and integration justice. There are so many nice features to love but I find myself rubbing the pulls often - sounds weird, I know.
I have to say that this is the most beautiful piece of furniture that I have ever seen. Incredible design, brilliant joinery, and a perfect name. In addition to chemistry, the valence electrons are the reason for electromotive force, better known as electricity (voltage). Awesome job, simply amazing,
Simply beautiful. 70 years old and trying to continue to learn something new every day. Keep the creative juices flowing sir. Thank you from Charlotte, NC
wow.. i just saw this one. Beautiful! Would love a piece like that in my home. I love good modern sensibility in design. There is NO room for error on such pieces, so i respect the craftsmanship and accuracy even more.
Beautiful piece of art. Truly amazing. With all that technology will bring handcrafted pieces will stand the test of time. You're creating things now that our forefathers had no choice in creating with their lack of machinery. Love your work.
Whether or not one would like the esthetics of this build is a matter of taste, but the craftsmanship is undeniably top notch! 👍 I for one love the design b.t.w. 😍
I was searching the deep dark crevices of my brain trying to find a description for your quality and attention to detail when you burst forth with your forgotten drawer pulls bit. So you distracted me from my mission which will now go unfinished. Love the plane work and joinery.
That is one of the most beautiful pieces of furniture I've ever seen on youtube! Just found your channel, don't know why after YEARS of watching woodworking videos on youtube, I am only seeing your work now!! Gotta love that little Lie-Nielson block plane.
I watched the BTS video of designing this, and since the piece isn't in the thumbnail of this video, it took me forever to realize this was it. I personally love this thing. I hope one day to possess the skill to build something like it, and the vision to design at this kind of level.
Good lord. I'm blown away by this beauty! Every piece you make is more stunning than the last. You sir, have achieved legendary status! Also, love your friend's music.
I love it and can't imagine hating anything you do because of the time you take to do it right. Hard to find true craftsmen these days that really take pride in all they do. I think you are a rarity and really enjoy watching you create works of art. Cheers to you my friend and thanks for sharing. 👍
@@SawyerDesign You bet. Thank you again for the amazing video and truly amazing art and craftsmanship. I'm looking for ward to seeing more and I love contemporary and modern designs.
I hope that at some point in time one or more of your pieces will end up somewhere on display, for people to admire. That's the type of furniture I find myself spending a lot of time contemplating when found in museums and such. Limitless admiration for your talent as always. BTW I know you have to make it digestable in length for numbers to watch, but man I missed so many details and wish this video was like 40min. Thanks for sharing, and your client for commissioning this build.
I like how you bring an Art Deco look to your stuff... when most people, nowadays are retroing Mid-Century, you use a little of both, with a modern creative twist :D
Found your channel via recommended and man o man am I glad I did. Your craftsmanship is impeccable and your designs are one of a kind. For sure something to strive for when I go into my shop. Keep the awesome content coming amigo. Subscribed.
Outstanding workmanship, lovely wood, and a super design. The combination of curves and straight lines really works well. I hope you get many more of these commissions. I'm certain the new owner will be delighted. Thanks for sharing your ideas and obvious skills. Best wishes.
I love the close-up chisel shots. I have used chisels my whole life for small things, but this past six months, I've really started trying to use them like they're intended. I'm still butchering the wood, but not as bad as I used to.lol
What a great build. Your designs never cease to amaze me. I would love to spend some time with you to try and figure how your mind works. These pieces of art are amazing!
I am a finish carpenter/contractor and make several custom pieces a year besides my other door hanging base nailing duties! However if I leaped totally into furniture like you I believe I would be starving and homeless 👊. You certainly have a gift you hone each day! Living the dream I am! U TOO! Keep ‘ em coming buddy love the content!
Honestly, a touch " quirky " for my personal taste but having said that Magnificently designed and the joinery is first class. Terrific video 👍👏👏. Regards Jim UK.
Sir, it is a rare thing that a piece of furniture can move me in this way...This piece is ABSOLUTELY beautiful.. The best piece I have seen anyone on you tube make....Keep up the great work..
You're one of my greatest woodworking inspirations. Sometimes I feel that maybe I'm trying something out of my league when I'm doing a certain project. But then I whatch your work and it just gives me the inspiration I need to keep going and trust my (still very low) skills. Thanks for keeping inspiring us all.
I love the geometry of this piece. I really think that this is one of the finest projects you've executed. Sensational design and execution. 11/10 mate!
This piece is sexy. I couldn’t find a better word. I love the grain in the wood and I didn’t expect the legs to be a different color on inside and out. The drawer pulls tying it all together. I just love how this came together.
This ignited random thoughts flashing through my brain. Genius! Nick, you are a mad scientist! I think I've just seen the second coming of Sam Maloof. Agreeing with Ivo - you're my woodworking hero. You have to post glamour shots of the piece outside of your shop.
You're so rad. Thank you for being such an inspiration. I've been woodworking as a hobby for a short amount of time using power tools. Your style sings to my ADHD and OCD. I'm so appreciate and inspired by your work. I'm beyond grateful. Can't wait to rock your shirts in my workshop. Just wanted to say what you do makes a huge difference beyond just being dope ass work.
Nick great project. there are a lot of RU-vid channels building stuff but there’s only a few that handle the design portion well, and the build portion is enjoyable. KUDOS!! I’m adding this to my design build playlist.
Beautiful piece of furniture, love it. Nick, found your channel via a promo by Cam from Blacktail Studio, I think you had 2K subscribers at that stage, seems after 12 months you have gained around 96K subscribers and me 🙂 I will get back there, but haven't been back to Cam's channel since watching yours, love watching you get dusty.
Strong piece for sure, I fully appreciate the craftsmanship and execution. After 40 years in custom furniture and cabinetry my tastes have turned to more subtle details. Nice work, look forward to seeing more.
We've all been there. On RU-vid for ages, think you have a solid list of subscribed channels, then you get suggested some next level magic. Thanks for sharing mate. Such an amazing piece.
Recently got turned onto your channel, and I'm so glad I did. Your work is painstakingly intricate and the video compilations are superb - as is your craftsmanship
Nick our house is now divided! My wife doesn't like it at all and yet I absolutely love it. Definitely reminds me of the mid 1920s Art Deco era the whole piece is right up my street and the biggest hint to the Art Deco era has to be the leg's for sure!!! I know it's each to their own with styles and taste but as far as I'm concerned when it comes down to styles with wooden furniture honestly I think my wife is blind 😅 🙃 Just don't tell her!!! As always buddy 💯% 👍 🇬🇧.
Hahaha if posting on Reddit has taught me anything, it’s that as soon as you step away from the norm, some people will hate it. Sorry to divide your house! I get some deco vibes from it as well. Thanks so much!
Hi Nick, discovered you about six months ago and have watched all your content! I really enjoy your presentation style. I’m a dentist close to retirement and I’m working on building out my shop in western North Carolina. Thanks for the inspiration. All the best, Chuck Pitts
