5 million raised is certainly no joke, but where do you see this fitting into the landscape of TCGs?
@DuelingMaru

He didn't mention the most important thing when talking about rarity and deck building: You can only have up to 15 rares and 3 uniques while building your deck, so common will always be the majority in any deck. The game is not about having a deck full of rare with better stats, rarity is a power budget in this game, and there will be less bulk and less expensive decks because common is always used

I was on the fence but decided to back for three reasons: 1. The non violent gameplay is perfect to introduce younger family members to the hobby. 2. Equinox has been more transparent as the Kickstarter went on, giving updates and doing interviews. 3. All the unique and foiler stretch goals make me think I'll easily make my money back if we end up not loving it. Most people I've seen that are against this game are mainly focused on whether they'll be able to flip it for a quick buck. I'm glad those people are turned off by it, they're the ones that ruin secondary markets. Game looks fun and I'm eating up as much content as I can about it.

@@kh2766 I don't really know where you're getting "Dead TCG" from here? The secondary market will be bustling on release, and the game is backed by a well known company (w millions invested in the Kickstarter) it's not going unsupported anytime soon. So I guess to answer your question, if I held onto them for years and support for the game died (the online market closed or interest went to zero) then no, I wouldn't be able to. But I don't see that as a reasonable concern.

Love to see some more Altered content on the channel! It's exciting to see some new concepts and shakeups in the TCG space even if they seem risky. I like the idea of re-printing your own cards, but wonder how that will turn out in the secondary market.

personally, i don’t think the tcg space is saturated at all. it just that people keep making “me toos” of the big 3. that’s saying video games are saturated because of 3 popular games. i think altered is out to carve its own space and not compete with what’s on there market head to head. and so far it’s been organically grabbing peoples attention since it’s breaking a lot of molds. excited to see where it goes but it’s off to a great start.

THe reason it's not comparable is because TCGs are like MMOs essentially. And more importantly, MMO's that have to have local servers in every town supported and trusted by the LGS-es :D:D:D:D: essentially What I'm trying to say is that TCGs work only if a lot of people support and keep supporting them over a long time. And the server costs are wildly more than paying MMO server costs.
@challengerex6320
@challengerex6320 3 месяца назад
@@Library4Lich even with that being the case, there still a lot of variety in mmos. it’s not just world of world craft. games are games. this is exclusively a tcg issue where there just a huge lack of variety that would appeal to different crowds. altered took a different approach and it paid off without the need to make a “let’s summons monsters and fight” type of game

I almost backed this game. But then I asked myself "Will I play this game?" When the answer was "only if others are playing" I stopped myself. Sure, maybe I'm missing out on the financial chance of a lifetime. But if I was to back a game just because I could sell the reward for a profit I wouldn't be happy with myself. Games are for playing, not for profit. If you want to profit off of a game make your own game. Long story short, I'll gladly buy this game if I see it in the store and others want to play it. Until then, however, I have enough on my plate with FaB and OP. Especially with how incompetent Bandai is with distributing products...

I decided to back Altered, but I definitely have concerns about the longevity of the system. The game feels fantastic online, frankly it feels like FaB and Lorecana had a baby. But in person it felt more like a board game than a TCG. I’m hoping that’s more a one time thing caused by me not explaining the rules properly. It also feels like it’s leaning heavily into the digital stuff in a way I’m not sure if I like. I think the game definitely has potential, but it’s probably in for a bumpy ride

I don't think indie tcg is even possible today. If it will have low playerbase, it will die. And if playerbase is big, it will be solved quite fast, and after that you will need to race against your playerbase, inventing more and more sets so game will not become stale Will be surprised if this game will stay for long (and of course i'll be glad for them)

I find collecting to be a big part of TCGs, Without collecting I dont think I would of made it to my local game store. I went there to trade and ended up playing the TCG for the first time. Same back when I was in school collecting pokemon very rarely did we actually battle unless in a game store it was mostly trading for collecting and I still enjoy collecting as much as playing if not more. I dont like the direction TCGs are going against collectors for me it kills the game same reason I stopped with FaB. I understand they want people playing the games but you need to get them in the game store first also You dont understand NFTs my g they have a place in the cryoto markey just not for what the masses use them for, also minting an NFT would cost a lot less energy and leave less of a carbon footprint then printing cards on demand lol personally i would prefer the cards to be NFTs they have done exactly the same concept without the security/transparency of a blockchain or use of crypto. Also print on demand like this does NOT support your local game stores I cant see a lot of them pushing this TCG when it's just cutting them out of the loop.

Many have come and gone and we just lost MetaZoo though I would argue MetaZoo was destined to fail. I'm not backing Altered but if it comes to retail, I may look into it. It doesn't look that fun or interesting for me personally.

So, I dislike this whole scheme because it feels like the company has designed a bunch of infrastructure to make sure they are the middle man for every single transaction. I can't buy cards from my local game store with out going through them, I can't buy cards from my friends, or people outside an event hustling their trade bait for lunch money, because I'm not buying a "card" I'm buying the Equinoxes recognition that I'm allowed to use it in Organized Play. I haven't done the work to see what their cut of this is, because maintaining that infrastructure isn't being done out of good will, but I expect it to adjust upwards once they can get a firm grip on the exact value of the secondary market and figure out what kinda goals they want to set for themselves growth wise. And I'm not against a company trying to make money off a game they are creating, but this is making money off secondary market transactions they've forced you into as a tax for wanting to play their game. Couple that with the fact your account in good standing is a prerequisite for liquidating your collection, if they decide they really don't want you playing the game, they just disconnect your account and you can't even liquidate your collection to people who are interested in continuing to play. And the Kick Starter wasn't so much of a kick starter as it was their preorder system, they have all the back end for the game made, they paid their artists, etc. They just wanted the free publicity of saying "Our Kickstarter met it's goal in 2 minutes and made a X times more than our goal." It's not unusual these days and it's not unique to them, but it still gives me the grumps. I don't inherently think they are a sketchy company, or they are out for some evil mastermind stuff, but they do happen to have a lot of the tools and systems in place that sketchy companies would love to have normalized.
@DMArmada

You hit on the biggest question mark I have with the system: how does it affect the secondary market as we know it? My worry also lies with singles and the LGS. Is this a game that truly encourages lgs and social play? Or does the economy work to exclude the secondary market due to everything being run on the company app? Conversely, does this allow for stores to essentially run a singles site through the app, forgoing shipping and TCGPLAYER fees? All questions I want to know the answers to.

@@DMArmada I've been trying to be generous with my assumptions, but I can't think of too many ways in which a local scene can be made stronger by having to negotiate your trades, loans, etc. through an international company. Sometimes I'll show up to an Armory event and just ask if people will loan me a deck because I've been too busy to build something, or I just wanna have the interaction of talking to some one about their pet deck. That suddenly feels like WAY more of hassle because of the logistical complications they've strapped to the game. Maybe it won't be that big of a hassle, and it's a truly paradigm shifting addition to the space, and I just don't have the creativity to see the positive ways it's gonna enrich things, but I feel like the model is asking me to suspend a lot of my well earned suspicions too early in the relationship.
@p3rditious638
@p3rditious638 3 месяца назад
There is also absolutely zero way they will be printing and sending out singles, or even small packs for free just because you bought some pixels from someone else, and definitely not if it entitles you to the same purchase as many times as you like, if that's true. Overall, I think it's going to end up devaluing physical cards to the point they're just not profitable anymore except for the company, and ultimately that hurts the player base, and FLGs. The game will have a great launch, they've ticked all the boxes for that, but I don't think the game with have the physical presence they are expecting it to. Also, the QR code on the front of the card is very off-putting and makes them feel more like a promotional card, than a playing card
@sud0gh0st
@sud0gh0st 3 месяца назад
For me this is simple if you want to play a TCG in a competitive format NFTs would be the safest and most transparent way to make an online digital TCG that has a market controlled by its user base not the company. If you want to collect also then the print on demand will kill this format not only does it stop your LGS from gaining anything it would also cost a great deal more to print on demand over NFTs also you have no way of viewing how many cards are produced with print on demand it's all just the "word" of the companys take a look at the pokemon cards that were stolen from the factory and hit the market this would not be possible with NFTs
@madrox992
@madrox992 3 месяца назад
@@sud0gh0st So I think the gas fees of using an existing block chain makes the NFT approach not ideal for me as a consumer. I don't think most users are going to want to have to deal with gas prices to just loan a card. I shouldn't have to pay any one to transfer my property to another person ( And equinox's FAQ does state they will have exceptions for this in place) . Also, there is the fact that part of the benefit of NFTs is having the capacity to develop smart contracts for various assets, but that requires transactions take place on the block chain, which means you gotta start doing transactions in the crypto, and ... that just feels extra. Unless they make their own distinct block chain, and then they gotta figure out how they reward people for validating transactions with out gas fees and ... this doesn't solve the fundamental problem of all of this extra complication exists to abstract ownership of a card into a digital transferable right, and I don't think that's a thing we ought to be doing.

@@DMArmada Where have you seen their plans to support FLGS' detailed? Every company makes those statements, but seeing concrete plans that have follow through is a rarity. With the loss of singles sales, I can understand this being a hard pill to swallow for retailers. I imagine Altered knew this and designed other things in their environment to facilitate the risk with the project. They are new to the space as evidenced by their pricing and retailer pledge levels. Experienced hands in the industry know that there is a wholesale pricing option available, which isn't the case here, and the money is collected at the time of shipping, not at the conclusion of a campaign. Additionally, if they love the LGS, why doesn't the retailer package offer displays of starter decks? It's adding up to a lot of good intentions, but personally I don't see evidence of good research on the market side of the business (like Ravensburger and Lorcana). This isn't to hate on them, it's evaluating a risk of hard-earned money and looking to see if there is a resource with answers I can locate.

It sounds good for me as a player, but it just sounds abusable in a way that might get the company bankrupt. Like if I buy a handful of cards digitally, then print out 10 playsets each, and sell the digital cards to buy another handful - can I not end up with multiple playsets of every physical card for essentially free, and if so how are they intending to make money? Might not work that way, I came up with that while watching the video with only the information you mentioned but if I can come up with a flaw in 15min then I would be wary of the business model.

The thing that may (or may not) mitigate against this is that only the owner of the digital version of the card can play the physical copy of that card in a tournament. Your take on the NFT thing seems like too much of an "crypto insider" take. To most people NFTs are just owning rights to "digital art" and the idea that that is something that holds value (which people at large rejected). To me the whole economics side of this just seems like it's concieved by people who are way too deep into this "eco-sphere" and can't see the broader picture. Also, the fact that half of what's innovative about the game is that stuff is... concerning. At the end of the video the question left in my mind is; Is the game good though ? Even if this ends up being a successful new take on distribution of card games it won't matter if the game fades away into obscurity.

Mechanics are good, as in functional and create a cohesive play experience. Whether or not one likes it is totally subjective however. @da That is pretty much what I meant. Most people do not have deeper concept of NFTs beyond that it's about trading digital rights tokens. When someone says this is like NFT they're not concerned about the things you talked about, they're concerned about how it's a digital "thing" that only holds speculative value and that 99,99% of NFTs historically have not retained their value. If they had deeper knowledge about NFTs they would probably not make the comparison.

TLDR: I'm a hater. The more I look at this game the more it feels like it should have been a board game or an LCG sold in a box or something. For some reason youtube keeps recommending this to me, so I'll take my time to write a comment after watching this. My main reasons for hating this game are mostly knee-jerk, nothing to do with it's actual quality, backing or potential future. I hate the art. The art-style is this homogenized boring inoffensive style that league of legends started adopting not too long before I quit and is used by many games since. I always hated it as to me it looks boring and uninspired, even the coolest ideas look lame this way. Can't exactly describe it better, because I'm not an art guy. The whole QR code (disgusting) / digital ownership stuff. Seen it tried before, as you mentioned it was the "other way around", might as well have printed it on the back that is going to be covered by a sleeve. The print-to-demand thing is also questionable, what even are you collecting here? The core gameplay of winning a race is also boring and feels like the game will be a lot more meta heavy than others as the win condition is so unorthodox. By that I mean people will have an easier time optimizing the fun out of it.
