you should have just went to the nearest auto parts store and just bought a new battery or quickly got it checked. i would assume internationally all auto parts store can also check the battery and alternator with a voltage meter to make sure its the battery that fails before replacing. but definetly glad you made it back with odyssey safe.

Same. It seems that they might not have disconnected the battery before shipping. The nice thing about diesel engines is that they don't require electricity to run. It's only needed for the starter and any other electrical items on the vehicle. You can also idle them for as long as you want. They don't need to be turned off while fueling either. That's usually posted at the gas station but isn't necessary and I've never seen it enforced.
@mracer8
@mracer8 6 месяцев назад
I can already tell you it is not the alternator because she wouldn't be able to have any electric even if the car is running! a new battery would solved her issue !00% or at least get her home in Poland!
@chrismaverick9828
@chrismaverick9828 6 месяцев назад
@@mracer8 Definitely leaning towards the battery, given its hard life the past two years. That said, checking the charging system doesn't hurt, as I've seen enough instances of an alternator cranking out enough power for a vehicle to run, but not enough to sufficiently charge a previously flat dead battery to any crank-worthy level, especially a larger displacement engine. She needs a good going over regardless to get her back into travel-worthy state with any piece of mind.

Hi Eva, that battery was most likely left connected while sitting in the shipping container. The shipper is supposed to disconnect the battery cables. I ship cars from the US ti EU and back for many years. I know the manager at West Coast Shipping, and I would get them to buy you a new battery...that's unacceptable, especially at 3,500 euros !!

Yes, I have been surprised at various build, modification and maintenance times, that someone has not suggested or rigged her up with some of these pieces of equipment, especially given some of the very remote places she has driven. About her starting problems, 9/10 of the time it is the battery, especially in a 3-month span like this. Even if jumpable as this one was, time off like that, and more so if it has remained connected (but even if not), a battery on its way out will take advantage and show its problems for sure when given the next opportunity.
@LoremIpsum1970

Agree, though I think this is learning as you go.... Well, 3 months is a little long even on trickle charge... But even a Jackery or EcoFlow can charge a 12v SLA battery in two different ways. I'd say that battery either needs replacing or worst case reconditioning. Sometimes, when I watch RU-vidrs go places like the Arctic or Scandinavia, even once they've been to a specialized offroad mechanic their vehicles really aren't winterized enough. I've seen diesel heaters fail when there's no back up heat source at under -20; and, I know 110v block heaters are used a lot in the US, but Defenders can be fitted with diesel-powered coolant preheaters... If those and other items cost too much before leaving, I wouldn't leave until I had them. *One question I would have for wannabe off-roaders is whether they got any practical instruction on an offroading course in their own vehicle* as I've seen a lot of mishaps that should never have happened if the driver knew the vehicle's and their limits...

There’s something very inspiring and exciting about this adventure you went on. It involves an older vehicle with sentimental value (that sometimes people don’t really understand) and I can relate to that - as someone who just bought a 1991 BMW 325i that used to be my dad’s. Having lost him in 2020, this car means a lot to me, and sometimes you have to sacrifice creature comforts - when u want to drive a car of a certain age. Things that used to work stop, have to be replaced or repaired and in some cases - as the sunroof on mine, it’s beyond repair. So as someone who loves to drive I found this to be exciting and so cool to see someone get so excited about their vehicle. It’s truly special when u can develop that relationship with an inanimate object, but, here we are..!😊

I had similar battery issues with my car from UK to Germany (Greifswald so very close to Poland). In the end, a new fan belt - problem solved. This was back in 1997 when cars still had skinny little fan belts BUT it was an Austin Morris Metro and Germany didn't have the parts (but Poland did - & very cheap too). Back then there was a constant convoy of Germans heading to/fro the Polish border for cheap goods, from car parts to ciggies and Poles on bikes selling them 😊.

Sounds like you need a solid-state battery jump box. No need to rely on other people being around, no trying to maneuver two cars into alignment in a busy parking lot or along side of the road. My dad got me one for Christmas about 5 years ago and it's been invaluable; first for a horrible lemon of a car, and in the years since, sharing it around to other stranded motorists. Mine even has emergency lights and a little air compressor for (slowly) filling up a low tire. Best. Present. Ever.

First rule for a car that never run for months; first, please check the car battery health after the first start, or replace it. Second, Service the engine oil, because after few weeks the engine oil will drained down to the car oil pan which will effect in the long run running the car dry. Check the coolant levels or condition, is it still ok? Quick tips; disconnect the battery terminals when leaving the car for long time. If it happens you have a solar panels and a big battery in a car, take care of that too. Anything could happen. Take care Eva.😊

Lead acid car batteries don't do very well if allowed to discharge below a certain point. They naturally lose power on their own just sitting idle, and if your truck had electronics (e.g. computer, clock, etc) that drew small amounts of current while it transit, then your battery may have been permantly damaged. This is probably why it wasn't hold a charge even after a jump start and long drive.

I've heard that at 50% state of charge it will start to become damaged and will lose longevity. Thus it must be kept topped off.
@arghjayem

The battery should’ve been completely disconnected whilst in transit on the ship, it’s usually a requirement of shipping companies, but it seems that wasn’t done. So yes, likely it’s discharged too far. Had it been completely disconnected it probably would’ve been fine after the 3 month transit, will still have needed a jump start initially, but wouldn’t have kept failing.

Car Battery 101: They're only good for 3-5 years and need to be replaced regularly. If storing for more than a few weeks - disconnect the battery from the vehicle. Most cars have 'parasitic' loads when the vehicle is off / not running - and car batteries aren't designed to power low amperage loads for long periods of time. They're designed for short period / high amperage loads - like starting the car.

Happy New Year and Reunion from a fan in Colorado! I wish I could have done some adventuring like you have when I got out of the Army (47 years ago). I was stationed in Berlin and would have liked to have seen more of Europe than I did while serving. I really admire you and enjoy your videos and look forward to more. Safe travels!

Why didn’t you just keep it running while you filled up? It is a diesel, trucks never turn their engines off to refuel

You should have taken the car to a shop nearby right away to get a new battery placed lol. It would take 10 mins and would have solved this problem for good right away haha

Trix are for kids silly rabbit, just as cars without an ammeter/voltmeter. With an ammeter/voltmeter you can tell how the battery is performing while recharging. It's complicated so I won't explain it here. But since you drove 2 hours and still needed a jump start, I would diagnose the battery as needing to be replaced even though it did start later after being driven longer. You'll discover that in the next day or 2. It won't hold a charge overnight, especially if kept outside. If you are striking out on a new adventure before spring then I suggest for your next European adventure that you go to any country with a clothing optional beach to warm up and dry out. There will be plenty of time in the summer to go north. Dubrovnik has an interesting history, and I've heard Montenegro has some good beaches. Or you could go down to the little island of Corfu to skip the snow. Exposure would do a lot to boost tourist economy in those out-of-the-way places.

Eva, my sweet girl. You'll never believe where I am. The Amalfi Coast in Italy. I explained in serving in the Ukraine as a medic and was seriously injured in October. 32 screws, 16 plates and 8 rods later my pelvic bone is now stable and healing as well as 8 herniated discs in my lower spine. It's now January 14th 3 months to the day and I'm walking 6,000 steps each day. My medical leave is a year but I'm reporting back on the front March 4th 2024. My health is secondary to what I'm committed doing for the Ukrainians. Soldiers and civilians. You inspired me right from the start of my 6 year journey to the Ukraine. You are always in my prayers for safety and health. Thank you and you are forever my friend. Respectfully of course. Cheers... 🫡🇺🇦

I have a kinda sorta similar situation. My car has been parked at a friend's house in Oregon for the past eight months. He sent me a picture of it a couple days ago, covered in snow. He said it was having a hard time starting and I'll probably need to get a new battery when I get back there (soon). Curious to see what sorta condition it's really in.
