The google machine says 'windrow' is a noun, from 1520's, and it is called such because it is a row of grass exposed to the wind for drying.

tbh i always thought it was the opposite... im 99.9% probably wrong but on our farm we cut, then leave to dry then ted and flip it all then dry again but when the moisture is just right we toss er in windrows to kinda conserve the moisture in the center of the windrow. it kinda protects the inner clumps, yea the outside dries quicker but thats why we chop asap. at the same time tho our farm is a resurgence farm (my dad was born on a farm and moved away to work then bought a farm with his retirement so returned to the farm life) so that being that we dont know as much as the 5th and 6th gen farms and so on. but we try our best on our dinky 100 acre farm. lol wish it was bigger id love to carry a cam around and do what these farmtubers do. its such great and informative content. yes i know our farm is small. we didnt buy it to turn a profit. we bought it to invest in the land. there is no safer investment then to buy farmland.... prices for actively farmed and turned land always go up.

On the farm in England, we would also say windrow, I think it's pretty universal and has to do with turning the cut end of the grass so the wind can dry it.

Eyes wide open Cole, good spot on the barb wire. In Saskatchewan we call them swaths, I guess that term came from the fact you use a swather to make them before you combine? Most of it here is done east to west as our prevailing winds are usually out of the west and if you swath north to south your crop ( especially canola ) ends up in the neighbours field. That way the wind blows down your rows.

Windrows, because before tedding, you turned the hay into small rows of hay called "Windrows" so they were airrated and the wind went through them to dry them. Nowadays all rows, be it for baling hay or silage for pickup are called windrows. same all over the world. Though in Ireland we tend to qualify the row by width of grass it contains, 10 foot, 20 foot, 30 foot or 50 foot rows and reserve "windrow" for hay, mostly though it varies throughout the country.
