We talk a lot about Thru-Hulls and sea valves in this video so here is a short explanation what that even is. A Thru-Hull is a reinforced hole in the hull where water can enter the ship or wastewater leaves the ship. Of course you need a trusty valve inside the ship to close off this hole just in case something goes wrong with your pipes. And that is the sea valve.
In this older video, you mention people complaining about your complaining. I believe it was wonderful to document as THAT is real life. Not everything goes according to plan and it's how you two adapt to those changes that make this channel interesting. Great job my friends!
I agree with you. Keep your commentary real. I've seen a few channels that make the demolition/refit/rebuild easy. It's just step by step and then it's done. All done in time-lapse and music (I do like your choice of music) What you're doing is never going to be a step by step, there ya go, job done. It's hard graft sometimes and I for one am grateful for your honesty. I love it.
I've no complaints on your video production at all. I enjoy seeing how things actually happened not an "edited" version. You guys do a fine job. I've experienced the dusty/dirty ship yard work experience too and its "oddly satisfying" (to use your words) watching. Its lucky you have each other to lean on when times are challenging.
I worked for many years in ship yards plus a career in the US Navy as an Engineer. I'm very familiar with everything you're going thru. I believe that any complaining that some people are talking about that the 2 of you express on your videos are good to hear so people get the true feeling of what it's like to do these projects. Far to many people watch these videos and see the couples having nothing but fun with bubbly attitude's doing these projects come away with the impression that it's all like that. Than they sink their life savings ( and sometimes the savings of their parents, siblings & friends) only to find out it was actually way more expensive, time consuming & straight up difficult to actually accomplish & end up just abandoning the project leaving everyone involved broke financially and morally . You keep doing it the way your doing it . Whether the people realize it or not your doing them a favor.Great Job by the way. I'm retired now and live alone withy wife passing away a few years ago of cancer. I wish I lived near you so I could just volunteer to help and stay busy. Good luck to you. God bless.
I think a project ship is always an adventure and of course you can plan ahead and you can do research but then you have to make a decision and hope for the best. Sometimes it's hard and we also want to show you this part but the important thing is that you know that in the end it will be worth it. We also learned so many things and so much about ourselves. So next time will be way easier.
Don't worry about these who think you moan too much. Too many people want to live through these videos in the world of entertainment, where no matter what, you put on a big smile and the 'show MUST go on'. Having spent 16 years preparing to take a nuclear submarine to sea in a 2-week maintenance period, it is all hands and every effort. 48-hours without sleep were common, the worst I ever di was 7 days and yes, I know the body can't do that, trust me, it can and did. Slept for 24 hours after that though.. My point is, you get through the tough times by moaning to each other and laughing through the ridiculous things you end up doing. You form lifetime friendships and real life is HARD. You are putting EVERY thing you have into this, every erg of energy, every penny you own, time out of the water is expensive, stressful and you end up doubting yourself and everything about yourself. Keep going, some of us want to see real life. We don't need to hear you swearing and shouting at one another, but let it be real.

I'm renovating/restoring a much smaller wooden trawler. Doing the work myself. The gratification and sense of accomplishment at every step is great! Keep up the good work! You'll learn a lot, and have mych to be proud of

I did something similar, I rebuilt a 36' wood sailboat, took me 7 years, I never thought about giving up! Not everyone on RU-vid has good sense, do it your way, then there will be no regrets!
Very nice little motorhome. It should make your life a lot less stressful. Love the column shifter. Reminiscent of the old "3 in the tree" popular in older American cars. Great job on the ship. The yard professionals look and sound very professional. Tell them they're doing great, and becoming very popular. They are a great ambassadors to the world, for their yard and deserve a lot of respect. Do what seems to work for you, with respect to the videos. I have enjoyed every one so far. Don't make it look too easy, trials and tribulations lend authenticity and thats what i enjoy along with the great questions of "what is a better way, this or that", and why. It helps me learn, too. Please continue to ignore negative comments. There are always people who think they can do better but have never actually rebuilt a boat. I am a fiberglass rebuilder so I find a steel rebuild completely fascinating. Thanks so much for sharing
Hi Dina, steel is one thing a riveted hull another 😁 We've learned so much during these few months and still everyday we learn something new each day we find the time to push the refit further. Are you still within your rebuilt or already sailing?
Don't pay attention to viewers who claim you complain too much. They obviously have never done this kind of work, and yes this work can be aggravating to the max. What you are doing is no small undertaking and everything you touch needs attention or replacement. So just keep doing things your way as it is very real and relatable. Nothing worth doing is ever easy. Flying Coney is a beautiful old gal who needs a proper refit. Glad to see that is what your doing. Her hull is good and with the repairs your doing will be good for another half century.
Keep on doing what you are doing with videos. You are showing the real process and it is very good. Seeing the ups and downs and easy and hard parts is very informative, especially if someone is contemplating taking on a project boat.

I don't hear complaining at all. What I do hear is a discussion of problems to solve and a demonstration of how to solve it. Very much like the undaunted UK pair (Jemma & Simon) on YT "Ship Happens", you get down and get dirty. It's a messy business doing restoration. . Well done both of you and keep going.

All the time the lads in the shipyard told us we have to wait until the paint is on. Without it you see all those imperfections on the hull. So the optical transformation when the primer is on is HUGE! Can't wait to show you the footage of the painting!

Buying the camper was a great idea. You need a place away from all the work so you can at least relax for a little time. You don't want to burn out you need some time away.
Marvelous, we love this new episode. Such a perfect solution buying a 40 year old camper to live in while this massive rebuild is underway. The camper is a real game changer since we now have a place to rest. We can focus more on the refitting project. But most days we head over to Flying Coney even if it's an editing day. It's just so much better to be on the water instead of being at a parking lot. But running water, a working heating, something that deserves to be called a kitchen, it's nice to have. 😁

Just as my opinion I think that you should left at least a 4 in betting on the bottom for future growth such as seachest that can handle a water maker saltwater washdown. And a emergency fire pump.
I love your channel as I have said before you two are one of the most hard-working lovable people I've ever seen and you are very knowledgeable about boats and are not scared to take on such a massive project with flying coney I am so glad that you have finely got the hull sorted as we could see there was nearly an inch thick of steel where the shipwright was welding the plug so Coney has a lot more years left in her and even more when you have finished the refit she is going to look splendid and this format of videoing is perfect well done you two you are amazing so all the best from John from Rugby UK.

I would love to see more of your camper van. Europe is so much farther ahead of North America with small camper vans. We have TONS of huge units, but smaller ones like yours are slowly catching on. I have been looking very hard at something similar, over here they are called a Class B. Coney is coming along quite nicely. Any chance you could put a date on when you were doing the work. I know the boat is back in the water but when did you launch?

At one point we considered mounting a caravan on deck as a living quarter but the camper serves both as our car and as a place to sleep in. I know many barge captains take their car with them but on the long run only the boat is enough for us.
Already looking so much better compared to when we started, if I do say so myself. But I can't await the moment when we're finally done with all the repairs and start to build up again. I hope this video was a glimpse of that.
Get some 3/8 inch Bungee cord attach it to the railing, throw the other end overboard. Attach this end to your heavy grinders, this will help carry the load.
Just keep doing what you are doing both with repairs and with videos. This is really interesting! Do it your way and you will keep the people who are really interested in the project! Good job!

I dreamt of running a sailing ship and being a captain since my first sailing lessons in Vienna. That's 25 years ago now. But the editing does involve lots of hours in front a computer. But at least I'm sitting on a boat and not in a basement. I think that's a win!

When I did anything like repair ,replace , the area I worked on I use to clean it up and paint it then put back to get her again that way your getting places that sometimes not easy to get at . Slowly getting there
That was quite impressive setting in and welding that plug. Pretty smart welder. I checked out Hoekman ship yard and found it on Google Earth in Ure. Long way from Sarnia Ontario Canada.
Cool, here in the states we don't have a good selection of smaller campervans and definitely hardly any with diesel engines. Its a Fiat! Weird but I never got the impression that there was much complaining. I think people just hear what they want to hear. You guys are working hard and doing good stuff
Diesel is definitely more common here in Europe. The Fiat is doing an ok job but a little bit more hp would be great. Just the other day we barely made it up a steep hill in Austria. A wet road, slipping front tires (I hate front wheel drive...) and 16% inclination... At one point we fell below walking speed and the maximum was 10 mph 🤣 But we made it up!
Fantastic work as always! You really need though to get some fire protection blanket to avoid sparks from grinding to go everywhere and damage everything (paint/cables/stainless…) Bon courage pour la suite du refit!
Good idea to use protection blankets. But we're still more in the destruction phase of the refit and speed is more important than anything. Most of the stuff you see will eventually be ripped out, replaced or repainted. It's an old style dirty engine room, from a period were they used to dump used engine oil directly into the bilge and all that.
@@FlyingConey thanks for replying! I’d say, even in demolition mode you need to think fire protection. You never know what rubbish or unknown liquid in some stupid crannies can/will catch fire. So blankets and plenty of fire extinguishers (yes plenty). End of the Safety Speech buzz kill! You are such troopers, your dedication to both work on the vessel and RU-vid) is impressive and commendable !
I still don't understand why some invest time in watching content they don't like. We just needed to realize that we need to make videos for the majority of viewers who enjoy what we're doing.
Hi, Just say how it is you can`t do more, forget the negative comments on here, you yes have a great lot of work to do but the end result will be worth it, take care and have fun. and live how you want to live.
You know if you install a crank jack on all 4 corners of the rv and place a piece of wood underneath when parked it will keep it stable, less rocking around. I used to haul livestock over the road here in America and when I would take a few hour rest I would dump the air out of the suspension on truck and trailer which resulted in less movement.
Manual transmissions are much more common here in Europe and most of my cars had them. I even know how to drive a non synchronized gearbox and manage to drive a truck with a broken clutch 50 miles to the garage. The camper has a 5 speed transmission and the great thing about the stick on the column is that it's very easy to get to the drivers seat from the inside. Overall the camper is great, the car it is based on... well it's a FIAT
Having worked the last few years before I retired working at my father in laws automotive machine shop... cars/trucks/ag engines. Every time I see someone like he was fighting with the tap and how tight it was I cringe because we saw so many tap's broken off where someone screwed up. We made a lot of money removing them and drill bits because of time needed to do the repair plus a lot had to have Heli-coil type repair. I had spent most of my work life selling engine parts.

Doing a great job!love to see you both working to save this beautiful ship ,I am only worrying about the position of the valve installed ,shouldn't it be upside down ?:in case it is to be closed,the threaded rod is in the sea-side part of the valve and could leak on the stem via the packing chamber ,if mounted in the oposit direction only the membrane or disk is a risk of leaking . (just my opinion , there is always more to say 😊)
The camper really looks like a home. I really enjoy watching your channel. Don't feel pushed to publish something (i am not an algorithm they may or may not need it), I am very happy if you publish though. Most important thing is that you are happy. Any plans for the boat yet? I know that "natuurmonumenten" is utilizing boats because their ferry to Markerwadden is broken. They are using charter ships to taxi people from and to the island. No clue if they will need more boats, but on their website they state that: "for June it is not known yet which ships will be there for the service", so if you feel like it, and can sail people, it may be your cup of tea. No clue in which state your boat is now. Maybe you can make some money??? No clue. Any way, very cool camper, but you said trade in; you did make some money on the van right? A van is more expensive then a camper (in my mind it sure is worth more). Have a very good summer. It will be great times for sailing I am sure. Greetings, Jeff
Beware of ‘a little light rust’, thinking it will be OK. It won’t. Light rust festers under a covering of paint and can quickly become heavy rust, eating its way through the hull.
Nice job so far. Could I suggest perhaps you introduce yourselves in the intro and just give a brief synopsis that you want to bring Coney back, we’ve repaired major hull damage and continue to renovate the inside. Next we are…….
Hi Robert, here in Europe it's the other way around. Not many motorhome with an automatic transmission. The good thing about the old Fiat Ducato is that the stick is mounted on the steering wheel column and not at the cabins floor. That makes it easier to slide in and out the drivers seat from the cabin.
In the video, it seemed that there will be just the one thru-hull, but in the comments below you mention two; the one shown for waste, and one for sea water in. Glad to know there will be at least two; not sure how you'd cool the engine without sea water. With only one waste water through-hull, waste water will have to travel through the hull to reach it. Any failure of piping below the water line can sink the boat if the sea cock is open. Perhaps think about the trade-off between multiple through-hulls versus length of vulnerable piping. The thru-hull seems like the most robust part of the system.
Currently we have a keel cooling. So no sea water needed to cool the engine. I've not seen the place were the pipes are going through the hull but in theory there also should be two valves. But they are not that safety relevant since it's a closed system. On the long run we try to minimize the through hulls but it's not dogmatic. I guess we'll end up with 3 or four, maybe in some sort of sea chest for additional safety. On the long run we also plan to get rid of the keel cooling for additional speed when sailing. But first things first...
@@FlyingConey Makes sense...Probably won't discharge much (any?) waste water while at the dock. Maybe use the thru-hill for sea water dish washing. Curious if you've thought about finding a naval architect to help plan the interior, sail and fittings layout, deck houses, etc.
It's an open secret that most live aboard yachts here are hardly ever seen at the pump out station 🫣 We try to work together with specialists regarding the rig and the alterations in the superstructure and we try to comply with the strict rules for German traditional sailing vessels. We try to do the project management and the general layout ourselves since a naval architect is quite expensive.
The last two tasks that needed to be done while the ship is out of the water are the repair of the frames and blasting the hull. We hope we can do both in about 6 weeks. Some yards have a jetty where you are allowed to work on the boat while the ship is in the water. That's how we've planned to lay down a new deck. A lot of work ahead of us but fortunately we're half way through the repairs.
Even the funnest of activities with boat building can have downsides.. (cough cough grinding .. (lol)) I wouldnt even respond to the hater armchair shipbuilders.. they apparently have no compassion or clue the level of commitment and effort these projects take! Keep on moving forward, your doing an awesome job and I guarantee you will be the last ones laughing, enjoying your great accomplishments 😅😅
Not every type of valve is rated for commercial use. Since we're registered as a pressure craft it's not necessary but still... On the long run I don't think we'll have more than two valves and for us safety is more important than convenience.
We have a keel cooling. So no heat exchanger or raw water inlet. So there are pipes running alongside of the keel with the coolant of the engine. Actually we don't know if there are valves at the inside of the hull on this spot. The sole in the engine room is partly welded in place and we haven't found the time to make a better solution.
Wow! I haven't seen a manual column shift in the US since the early 1960's. Last one I had was a '54 Ford pickup. Edit: Don't be confused, campers only fit 2, no matter how many it "sleeps". I'm not an expert on much.....but this........
The column shift is quite nice for a camper because it's easier to get on the drivers seat from the inside. The 5 sleeping places are theoretical, for us it's important that we don't need to transform the camper for sleeping. For volunteers it's important that there are separated beds and it has three separate places to sleep.
