Looking back on two years of rebuilding Flying Coney and all the ups and downs of this enormous refit project.
In a very extensive shipyard time we ripped out the interior and insulation of our 82ft sailing boat and we derusted, repaired and recoated the entire hull. And in the summer we tested our boatbuilding skills by repairing the wooden wheelhouse of our steel trawler.
Two amazing years that we were allowed to share with all of you.
THANK YOU so much!
Flying Coney is an 82ft long historic steel ship. And we bring her back to live as the beautiful sailing ship she once was. When we are done with the refit we want to sail the ocean together with you and teach traditional sailing skills.

Oh my! The fact Barbara worked as a wiper on a merchant marine vessel explains why she is the one doing the maintenance in the engine room.
@FlyingConey

We both have things we enjoy doing and things we hate. Working with heavy or dangerous tools isn't Barbaras cup of tea. Daniel hates to have oily, sticky or dirty hands or anything that is smelly. The important thing is we work together as a team and we compliment each other. And in defense of Daniel, he built and assembled his own car at the aged of 18.

Dear Barbara and Daniēl, For WIlleke and me it was nice to see everything in a nutshell once more. As you know we’re following your vlogs from the first moment on and subscribed about after 3 or 4 episodes of your vlogs. We’ve learned you’ve a lot of friends in other RU-vid channels we subscribed as well. We admire you for your never ending enthusiasm to bring back Flying Coney in her old glory as a tall ship. I hope you’ll get many many subscribers and enough patrions that you fully can concentrate on restoring Flying Coney. As always we look forward to your next vlog and send you love

We wanted to start the new years with one last time looking back. Tomorrow we will get down into the engine room and start cleaning up. Removing cables, pipes, pumps and so on. In the future we will concentrate a bit more on making more progress on the boat. It just needed some time to find the right style of RU-vid videos but now I think we manage to get more work done while we're still able to make some good videos. Thank you for following along and all the best to WIIIeke and you!

I love your determination and perseverance. I am going to sell my property in Montana so I can embark on a boat project as well. I think you are realistic in estimating two more years of work. Thank you and best wishes in 2024 !
@FlyingConey
@FlyingConey 4 месяца назад
The "two more years" is a RU-vid gag started by Leo Sampson Golden. It's a ruling two years with the benefit of finishing two years early 🤣. Realistically it will be closer to 4 years until we're finished. Good luck with finding the proper project boat!
@whitneylake2107

I have heard Leo say that on his channel and it is funny. My project actually involves me building my own design since waiting lists for catamarans can be up to several years. In that amount of time I can build my own for a lot less money. Thank you for your wonderful channel. I wish you continued success !@@FlyingConey

Thank you for watching! Growing into this project wasn't easy and looking back at the two years of footage that weather was really really bad. But we also noticed that it had been a slow but steady process into the right direction. Tomorrow we will start to get some work done in the engine room.

I'm late to the party and binge watched most of your videos during the past two months. watching some of these clips again, like Barbara cleaning out the bilge, all the welding in the shipyard, tearing out the interior - this really gives me slight PTSD. you've come such a long way, colossal work of you two and your helpers!

@FlyingConey
@FlyingConey 4 месяца назад
We came to the conclusion that there will be summer but not here in Lelystad. Her they have the cold winter, followed by the rainy winter, followed by the windy winter, rounded of by the freezing winter. So we have to get the engine done because I do not want to have another year of winter. (To be fair, it's not that cold here but the rain and wind make it feel way colder than it is.)

Dear Barbara and Daniel: You both have certainly turned this massive project into a lovely sailing vessel. With most of the Demo work done, we are will be most interested in the interior wood work to come. We can't thank you both enough for sharing this epic rebuild and hope you both receive some much needed rest in Austria over the winter. Are you planning any skiing while there? Wishing you both a Happy New Year!

Hi David, we're already back in the Netherlands and trying to get some work done at the boat. The weather does slow us down a bit and next week we're going the the Düsseldorf boat show. So not much rest for us. But I got some classic roller skies from my parents and that's probably the most Austrian thing you can do in the Netherlands: Go skiing 🤣

Don't feel too bad about the Northern weather. My boat is in Panama and, for most of the year, i can only work on the boat in the early or late hours of the day. Also, things deteriorate at twice the rate here (with the humidty, temperatures, rainy season etc).

Sat with a group of cruisers the other day and we were discussing % of time maintaining vs. cruising. We concluded that for a smaller (35 ft) fiberglass cruising boat its probably 60% maintenence, 40% fun but for a steel boat or a bigger fiberglass boat, it may go to 70:30. This vessel, of course, is in another category.

Good to see the overview...WOW admired it!!..a lot is done!! And still a lot to do😅..but you will finish that and after..enjoying the dream come true🎉..forget all this hard work. For the video's..my advice would be..KISS principle..spend not to much time on editing or nice music in background..and topic video's like the visit of old ships in the German harbour (but maybe that was no viewers hit😅). And being instructors..no ways to organize training and lessons with smaller boat(s) from the deck of Flying Coney from marina or achored on Markermeer or IJsselmeer in between of even during refit? Bravely forward..and sail by today's wind..or at least try😅..and I hope some better weather this year..my leaking now covered teakdeck waits my attention..😂 (sadly not yet in position to become patreon too)

Einstein soll einmal gesagt habe: "Do not worry about your difficulties in mathematics, I can assure you mine are still greater."

We're both attending a course for bosuns aboard tall ships. A part of this is learning to evaluate the state of a rig. After that we hopefully can give it a try. The past two years we had extremely bad weather. Cold, very windy and a lot of rain. But people here really know how to deal with slightly larger steel boats. Many people live on them, a whole commercial sailing charter fleet and a lot of very old workboats. So here's the knowledge and the infrastructure to get the boat fixed. As soon as we're finished we're heading south.
