As a swede, I have to say. this is so lazy journalism. first of all: to compare most of the countries mentioned and Sweden. first of all, Swedes have 10 million citizens on TWICE the landmass of Brittain. Denmark - 5 million people (half of Sweden) on 10 times smaller landmass. Social distancing IS the way here. It just not crowded. at all. Secondly - the footage they are showing in this is 2-3 weeks old. I live in Stockholm and I've seen the EXACT same footage in like 3 different segments from BBC, ITV, and CNN but weeks ago. they cant send out a photographer so they use the same footage?! But believe me... The streets ARE empty. People ARE working from home if they can. We are just not forcing everything to close and stop. You can't just drop down in central Stockholm at lunchtime and say: "look stuff is open and people are on the streets" and think that's all to it. Most things in the country are shut down and people are self-quarantining. This old socialistic country trusts the government and follows recommendations. We don't HAVE to put down restrictions because people are overachievers in the following recommendations. Third: People are extremely informed. This is isnt: "we don't care". This is: "let's try this first. Every country is unique. Let's look at our parameters and see what WE should and could do while saving jobs without putting people at risk. If we see the trend going the other way lets make sure we are ready for that too." Remember: This is isnt a big European hotspot like Italy, Spain, Germany or Great Britain. This is a large landmass, at the most northern spot in Europe with almost no people in it. Don't worry - we'll be fine. Edit: Have gotten some triggerd comments so let me clarify my point. Right now there is a lot of numbers comparing infected and death tolls from around the world in the comments. I get it but these comments miss my point witch is this: Different countries report coronavirus cases and deaths in different ways, which can easily lead to confusion and makes comparing the situation complicated. It's really hard to compare countries when it comes to numbers and how different governments around the world handle this crisis. Just think about it...: When did the virus really hit your country? January? February? Mars? Where on the curve are you? There was a time when Italy had more deaths than America. Swedens curve is past the peak and slowly turning back down. how many have you tested? Germany and South Korea have higher numbers than smaller countries but they have been really god at testing a lot of people. Where in your society did the virus hit the hardest? Unfortunatly the virus ht hard and early among our homes for the elderly. Yes - We have had high death tolls because of it but its been fairly isolated to Stockholm and these homes. In some countries its hit simultaneously on many fronts. Estland have a whole island infected. What's the nature of your healthcare system. It's free in Sweden. How is it the U.S? Your counries crisis preparedness? How many sickbeds do you have? How Whats the makeup of your welfare system. Is it generous? Is it effective? Is it based on apps and technology or do you have to walk down and stand in a line to get help? Workforce makeup? Whats the medum age of you population? Again - Density of population. Turism? Are you France or Finland? I get it ..it's low hanging fruit for journalist looking for a fresh corona angle to compare countries. It's easy for us at home.. scared and bored to track this desease around the world. We want answers to what works. But man is it hard to compare countries when it comes to stuff like this. Anf foolish to critizise with any kid of "i know whats best" attitude. In some ways, only you as a citizen can get a sence of how your government is handling the situation. I have no idea if what we are doing is gonna work. I just know there is a lot more to it than presented here and that not a lot of people here are complaining about the tactics of our government. Stay positive. Satay safe. /S

Population density might matter but then we have to talk about population density in a certain local region where there is an epidemic. The only reason I'm obsessed with these idiot doctors is that, in South Korea and Taiwan, from early on, masks were available in abundance to everyone. It was one the most integral parts of their success in controlling the spread. Still, in Canada it's very difficult to acquire them. What a total joke this country is. AND we are allowing passengers in Toronto fly in from China still without screening them. WTF !!!!
@johnmuthan286

@@toddlavigne6441 I understand your point but also under what happens in the rest of the countries. 1. The production of these masks are small (relatively to the actual worldwide demand) and not in every countries. 2. those countries, Korea, Taiwan, as being in strong relationships are used to similar outbreaks, they experience the sars1, then mers, and suffered a lot at the time, thus they were more reactive than 'western countries, which did not experience the same burden at the time. 3. Being the first to react, mask purchasing was easy and they managed to secure reasonable amount for their population. 4. Then the rest of the world got affected, and the need for masks worldwide rapidly surpassed the world production capacity. 5. In order to secure the minimum for our med staff, worldwide, even not reached in some countries, governments had to put some priorities. Sure, it would have been better to say the truth and say they could barely secure the equipment for the medical staff and therefore common population would have to wait. They lied and knew about it. Not good from gov, but I understand their position. 6. Human are difficult to govern and are NOT reacting very well, sure they would have been more hoarding and riots if they would have said the truth to the population. 7. Even now, worldwide production does not widstand the world demand of protecting equipment, masks for the medical staff that needs to fight this battle in every country so we have to all understand this situation and try to see what we can do to help at our level instead of complaining and waiting that people solve the issue for us. We are all in the same problem and have to all do something at our level.

g w As of today, the amount of cases per 1 million for Sweden is 1,133, for Norway is 1,233 and for Denmark is 1,153. Norway and Denmark have quarantined, Sweden didn't. Sweden has less cases per million, that is less cases than either Norway or Denmark. At best you can say the cases are about equal. Only one didn't quarantine. The number of deaths have nothing to do with the number of cases, obviously. Maybe Sweden's health care isn't as good as Norway's or Denmark's? But so far the experiment continues and I am very curious how it plays out. It feels great, yet a bit worrisome to be out and about. Should we be quarantined? IThe thought is always there. I am deathly afraid to take a bus or use the subway in case someone coughs on me. I hope I don't get it. Life goes on though, and like I said, the more time that passes, the more interesting this experiment gets.

This story is getting way overblown. Sweden isn’t going for “herd immunity,” they’ve shut down schools and universities and limited crowds to fewer than 50 people. The problem is that their weaker response has allowed for a greater number of infections and deaths. Fortunately for them they have one of the best healthcare systems in the world and everybody in the country has immediate access to top quality care so they can handle it for now.

Darrell Valentine the cost in the USA is largely because of our payer system of insurance companies. This alone adds more to the cost then any other factor. Then you add in the need to make up for uninsured or people who can’t/won’t pay medical bills. Then you add in that the insurance companies have more to say about your treatment than your doc, and you have what we have, a garbage system that on the outside seems great while in reality destroys lives while saving them. And truth be told about taxes, you and I likely pay our fair share. The wealthy and the corporate folks don’t. But that’s another topic.

Like Anders Tegnell says, it is sustainable for a longer time. Countries with harsh lockdowns, like Spain, Italy, Austria, Denmark, are already planning on lessening their restrictions to get some balance with the supply of resources that society needs. In Sweden, a LOT of the responsibility is put on citizens to behave appropriately and use their own judgement, we'll see how that works out.

This narrative of Sweden almost doing nothing is totally false. Shopping streets are not busy at all, a lot of people are working from home and seldom leave their houses/apartments. Restaurants are certainly not bustling, many are almost empty or closed. Elderly and others in risk groups are under virtual lockdown. Additionally, Sweden has one of lowest population densities in Europe and the highest percentage of single person households (more than half). Intergenerational living is very rare (aside from families with children obviously). Social distancing has been a national sport for decades. Swedes have a deep-set belief that you keep to yourself and do not bother others unless absolutely necessary. There is also a high level of trust in the government. The message from the PM (Work from home, avoid large gatherings, protect the risk groups.) is adhered to. The public health agency runs simulations constantly based on the latest data and are adjusting preventive measures on a daily basis. Our curves do not look bad presently, the number of deaths and people requiring intensive care is keeping quite steady. We should certainly do more testing though, and we failed in the early protection of risk groups.

Also, people in my circle, even they are now-essential workers but in the risk groups, they are allowed to work from home. Most of people are very careful here in Sweden. However, the goverment is still very disappointed as they don’t have the clear strategy unlike others Nordic countries like Danmark, Norway and Finland. Andrew Cheatle I live in Sweden, and the video doesnt do justice to what is actually going on. I have been working from home for over a month. People are voluntarily practicing social distancing, as in not seeing people in risk groups, keeping an actual distance from each other and so on. The recommandations being set by the government are being followed by all. They have also made it easier to stay home if you are sick in any way by giving everyone sick pay for 2 weeks without a doctors note, and more if needed after recommendations from a doctor. But closing down society completely at this point is not sustainable. People will at some point break it, you only really get one shot at it. So, every day an evaluation is being made to see if the spread has come to a point where the hospitals cant cope anymore, That is the point where we shut down. This is a strategy where we all expect the restrictions to tighten at some point, that has always been clear.

Stewart - I agree - the only issue that we may encounter is any potential skewing of numbers. This approach isn't politically beneficial and there's always the possibility that they (or any nation) will skew the numbers. While we're attributing any death that tested positive for Covid 19 as a Covid 19 death, regardless of what the actual cause is (given that in theory at least it could be due to a complication of other co-morbidities that was triggered by Covid 19), other countries may simply list a heart attack as a heart attack, regardless of Covid status. Will have to see how it all plays out.

I live in Stockholm, the company I work for has been having us work from home for over a month now, I go out once every few days only to buy essential supplies. Frankly I am thankful that there is no panic and no atmosphere of fear. BUT I do disagree with the fact that there aren't any restrictions. I'm not Swedish myself, but I've been living here for almost a year - the Swedes are nice people and they generally trust their government's recommendations, which right now - is just that - a recommendation. But no matter what the news is saying - all anyone needs to do is look at the daily numbers: March 6 - 137 cases March 16 - 1,121 cases --- (after 10 days: + 1,000ish cases) March 27 - 3,069 cases -- (after 11 days: + 2,000ish cases) April 7 - 7,693 cases -- (after 10 days: + 4,700ish cases) April 12 - 10,948 cases -- (after 6 days: + 3,300ish cases) I think people want to point to Sweden as a proving point for the lifting of restrictions, and so that people can resume the comfort of 'normal life'. But there's no magic, no secret here - cases (and deaths) are rising just like everywhere else. It's not rocket science.
@mieroth
@mieroth 4 года назад
This is a strawman. No one is arguing that avoiding lockdowns will somehow lessen infections/deaths (???) in the short-term. No shit if you lock people up infection rates will lower - temporarily. The question is what the plan is for the long-term, because this virus isn't going anywhere. And lots of people die due to being locked down over long periods of time too (increased suicides, domestic killings, poverty-related deaths, etc). NO ONE KNOWS which method will kill less people in the long-term, and that's something that we'll only be able to properly study years from now. So it's impossible to look at any kind of numbers NOW to determine the success or failure of Sweden's strategy. As long as Sweden doesn't overload their healthcare system (which would lead to more deaths than normal), then there's no reason for them to not continue on without a strict lockdown.
@DoraKage
@DoraKage 4 года назад
@@mieroth You dont need to shout (if that's what the all caps are implying) And you do have a point about the long term. I lost an uncle to this virus. 2 of my cousins, and 1 aunt are nurses working with Covid patients directly, in 3 different countries. You're proving my point by the way - how easily people get offended when they feel certain liberties are being stepped on - such as the ability to go anywhere and do whatever, whenever. Say what you want about methods too - (oh would you look at that: +407 cases and +117 deaths in Sweden since my last post), it's not rocket science just look at the numbers. But like I said in my post - Swedes are generally nice people, so being 'asked' or 'suggested' to do distancing, or stay at home isn't much of a problem (if you consider the consistent case number increase, not a problem) - but think about other countries where people - wont or cant isolate / distance themselves - it wont stop the spread in those situations. My own family is affected, my brother's business is going down the toilet, my parents who work as University teachers don't have work because of the situation - and I'm the only one who is lucky enough to be able to work from home, so im shouldering their burdens in any way I can. So while you guys are angry over liberties, I need to keep myself safe for the sake of my own family - because if anything happens to me, we'll be in deeper trouble than we already are. Must be so nice to worry about whether or not you go out tomorrow and enjoy the day.

Most from causes other than this. Over half of these deaths are in age 70 and older. Disproportionately older adults because that’s how aging works. Disproportionately people of lower SES because unfortunately that’s how our messed up economy works, promoting a a disparity in heath and healthcare quality. And regular flu deaths in US this 2019-2020 flu season has been 43,000 average estimate (this despite mass flu shots?). This is approximately twice the reported covid 19 related deaths yet no one is freaking out about that? Finally, according to world meters website, of all active cases of current coronavirus 96% are classed as mild, and has been at this level for weeks. The problem in comparisons isn't that they can't be useful, but that the US is primarily informing the population, and doing comparisons, on a national and federal level. Which makes no sense, especially now that there's no real federal management, control, planning or coordination. The US isn't one uniform mass. It's a mid-sized subcontinent of 50 different, diverse and separately managing (in this mess) states. If you want to make reasonable comparison, comparing the US to the western bloc of Europe as a whole (in terms of region and mass), as separate nation states, with each their state and local govts, a not-really-helping-much in this situation Union (although the EU is not a govt with legal powers over any of it's members - it's more of a trade, travel and commerce union, not a federation), and with massive cross-border inter-nation-state commerce, travel, work etc. And to be very clear - we really don't need anything near a like-for-like or carbon copy of our own situations and context, to derive information that can very useful to us. We just need to account for and understand the differences, how they manifest and what role they play.

@blueflame Sweden's government is still in somewhat of the kind of stalemate the US has been, and the UK was, with the government refusing to accept that they've messed up, and they're refusing to implement hard measures because that would signal that they did indeed underestimate this. Only, in Sweden there are no big powerful and resource-strong state goverments underneath, to really grab the reins, like many of the US states. About a week ago soon, that reporting showed outbreaks on just about every care facility in the entire nation (Sweden) - and still they refuse to acknowledge that their mitigation effort has failed horribly. And as long as they don't do any hard measures, there's not gonna be any hard turns on the curve either. Thing is - while they play on this herd immunity theory and are willing to sacrifice so many thousand of lives without giving those people a say in it - they're being pretty ignorant to the reality that _we don't even know for sure that people actually get a proper functional immunity after recovery._ They're betting the farm without a family vote, and no one even knows the odds of the bet yet.

@blueflame Testing, efficient contact tracing and time. Both time as in where they were (and are) in both their national, and the overall regional/global progression of spread, when they really started implementing measures - and time as in how vastly more rapid SK have responded and acted, on new information and new/changing developments. SK is also a research botbed, were one of the first areas outside China to have spread, so they're in some ways a good bit ahead of many others on learning about how this thing works. SK is generally pretty good on sharing research and data, but they're gonna be ahead on some studies and trials, where preliminary data can be really useful internally and domestically, but not yet vetted, verified or understood well enough, for sharing their results with the international medical community. They're also very different social cultures. South Koreans on average think more in the lines of common good and commynity, as a baseline. Wearing a mask during flu season, if you have a sniffle etc - primarily for the intent of protecting _others,_ was already a very common thing in SK long before this happened. Those things most definitely have helped modulate spread ealy on.

They have been very clear as to why the restrictions are there and why you should care. Some will be retarded and do it anyway (I know one, sadly). Death counts in Sweden also appear higher because we have complete knowledge of each citizen and their cause of death. For example, Italy counts ONLY deaths of Covid-19 if they died in a hospital. Any deaths outside of the hospital aren't counted. Countries such as Russia and several others have a LOT of unknown cases and they aren't very good at keeping statistical data. Finally, some countries simply count their statistics differently, meaning yet again that the numbers in Sweden seem inflated. Unfortunately, people just see a number without having any idea of the circumstances.

Sweden can keep this going forever. The counties who has a lockdown will have to open someday. The failure we have is that the virus has spread into elderly homes. The elderly is meeting a huge number of different staff and also many have free help in their homes several time a day buy different people that were not trained for this virus. We also had a very unlucky start with schools off and lots of families skiing in the Italien Alps just when the outbreak took off. We therefore had a huge number of people carrying the virus very early. This together has driven the number of death up, since so many old has got the virus. The spread in the rest of society seems to be quite low. I'm living in the second hardest hit region and I so far have not heard of anyone who got it. Then again, testing is not done, so who knows. Since the virus is spread, everyone has to act as they have it. The strategy is to not focus on only the Covid-19 deaths, but on all death. People still do die of other courses and saving one to sacrifice another is not a good idea. Hopefully we are better suited when the second wave hits.

Remember that Sweden has one of the most accurate reporting of death figures in the world, and that the test methods is different so that number of actual cases cannot be compared with other countries. Until then we will have to maintain a sustainable strategy that gives hospitals the best possible chance to save lives. The momentary number this early means little. Then again another part of me questions it. Can we get rid of it by a lockdown, or will it come back? If it comes back, perhaps we are more ready then. Also it's almost impossible to guess the effects of a prolonged lockdown. @@erics2305 that's indeed true. Seeing that most deaths are in nursing homes and it's most likely the people working there that has brought the virus to the elderly. Would a early lockdown had helped, yes likely. Would a lockdown made a difference in the long run when society opens up again? That would depend on what kind of testing is implemented and how much. Looking at these figures a year from now will probably paint a completely different picture.

The choice is pay now or pay later. WHEN this virus hits for a second or third wave the countries with the least exposure will suffer more. As long as their health care system is not being overwhelmed then I believe they will be in a much better position for the future. If we totally isolate ourselves we may be able to avoid exposure in the short term ( and this may be very necessary in some areas to prevent the hospitals from being overwhelmed) but can we sustain total isolation? At what point will people loose their ability to pay rent or even feed themselves? What will be the cost, in lives, for artificially creating poverty. NY has not overwhelmed the hospitals and experts estimate that up to 35% of the population has been infected
@thenostalgiabusiness
