In this weeks episode, we meet a family who are mastering the art of tiny house living. Originally Brad and Ruby were planning on moving into the tiny house with just their 9 year old son, however plans quickly changed when they discovered they were pregnant with another child!
Their home was constructed as a shell, and the interior was done as a DIY project by the couple who had previously only had very little building experience. Brad's experience as a designer is evident with the clever utilisation of the space and the way that the tiny house has been set up and designed for family living.
We hope you enjoy the tour of this wonderful home and charming family!

I totally agree with you. We’re building our tiny home for a family of 4, the kids being just 3 and 1 year olds. I have designed it be used until kids become adults. I don’t have height constraints, as it is fixed on my own land. So I could go 2 floors and one mini loft. But within that I managed to fit in a big kitchen, lengthy dining room, lounge area, two bedrooms and two bathrooms, each connected to a mini changing room. :) Took me 2 years to design it. I still am making adjustments while we’re doing construction. But I’m pretty sure it’s gonna be awesome and the kids would love it.

I can't imagine having to crawl to your sons room each time you need to go in there for something. Crazy. I wouldn't want my baby downstairs in the night and I'm up. A few things were ok in this house but most I didn't care for. I guess that's why it's good we are all different.

Hopefully they can add a second section as the kids grow. I didn't like the layout either, for the same reasons. And that TV at 40 cm from your face... nonononono
@mareezy

They said it's temporary. Yeah, would get old to keep crawling. They should add another container and double the space of their house. That would be a great idea

Sometimes tiny house living isn't all that glamourous...it's simply what they afford...this family would be better off on rent in a normal house...rather than living in mums backyard and crawling all over! 🤦

I'd put that couch on wheels so it could be rotated to face the tv when it's show time, then rotated back without undue aneurismic herniation. *Locking casters will ensure stability, and could cover the wheel so no little fingers or toes (or big ones) end up getting jammed in it causing apoplexy.

I usually won't comment on a home I'm not fond of but this one has me scratching my head. The two things that jumped out at me most were the living room, which was almost nonexistent, and the catwalk. My neck would start hurting fast watching TV sideways and the living room will get small fast when the 4 want to be together watching TV or playing games. They didn't say how long they plan to live there but it seemed it was the place they'll settle. Their son will be a teenager in 4 years. He'll be tired of having to go into his parents bedroom and crawl across the floor way before then That all being said, they were a charming couple and it's great seeing such a loving family.
@brad2064
@brad2064 2 года назад
At one point he said the babies room was going to be a man cave, that and the age gap with the kids suggests number 2 was not planned, so they probably had to adapt on the fly. Space would work much better with 3 in the family.

I'd mount the TV on a swivel mount so it could be viewed straight on. My concern with the catwalk would be for egress during a fire or other emergency. Maybe install an egress window in the kids bedroom??
@RoxanneLavender
@RoxanneLavender 2 года назад
They could make adjustments and changes to it, there's an opening area on the other side of the boy's bedroom, where a ladder could be used to get into the room instead of the catwalk. But, another commenter said that when the 9yr old gets tired of having to crawl the catwalk or whatever, he can switch with the younger child, so in 4 years he'll be a teen, his younger brother will be 5 and a half years old, so the younger brother can do the fun catwalk crawl and that can be his room, and the older one can have the downstairs room, which seems to be a similar size to the upstairs. But yeah, the 'living room' is more like a cubby hole or something, they could fit the fridge where the cooker is, have 1 worktop space, then the cooker, 1 worktop space, then the sink, divider, then cut off the extra kitchen worktop space to make the living room a little bigger. Add flat, thick opaque blinds instead of curtains over the doors, and project onto that instead of tv, doing that could potentially also create space for stairs into their son's room, for when they are both too old for the catwalk. The great thing about tiny houses is that they can be changed easier and cheaper than brick houses.

Given the factor of children, I’d be interested to see how people have had to adapt their tiny home as they got older. Did they keep on living in their tiny home, expand it somehow or something else? I feel understanding how people outgrew their tiny house, would be an interesting episode - I don’t think it invalidates the tiny house, but highlights challenges to think about.

What a beautiful home to create for your family! Amazing job you two on the design and child proofing! I love the thought placed into sound proofing a room, even if the original inspiration was man cave instead of baby! 😜 it’s such a good idea. In a small space, division of sound so you don’t drive each other crazy is important. Love this couples attitude! What awesome parents. great layout tho ✨ considering the space, I don't think that there's a better way to put 3 separated bedrooms with decent space like that some cost-effective modification ideas that maybe can improve life quality (especially for the childrens): 1. kitchen downsizing to expand the living room, since the childrens will need that more than a full size kitchen. plus: add a top cover for the sink and stove can make the kitchen space more efficient! 😁 2. build a movable ladder that can be put beside the living room tv wall to create direct access to the 9 y.o boy's loft so he don't have to pass the parent's everytime. he's 9 y.o tho, a ladder won't be too dangerous (as long as the baby doesn't climb up there) 3. increase the sunlight supplies by create bigger window on the bed loft maybe?

Absolutely the best tiny home design I’ve seen yet!! Love the cat walk, could get a mechanics seat to go back and forth on the catwalk! Didn’t see a dining table though…love it!!

Wow. I'm so glad it's working for them. When people comment, they really need to remember that their opinions are just that - opinions! It's not a terrible layout or impractical. It just wouldn't suit you. I see so much potential. I would probably use it differently to the owners, but that's kind of the point with tiny houses. You can adapt them to your needs.

Good point! They love living in it and that is what matters!

They should try those high clothing rails that pull down (using a pole) for their clothes, and put them in the babies room. They could take advantage of that tall wall at the end.

Hola, soy seguidora de su canal y me gusta mucho. No hablo inglés por eso es muy importante poder tener los subtítulos en español. Agradecería enormemente que pudieran colocarlo como en los vídeos anteriores. Gracias. Saludos desde Venezuela

This is definitely not my favourite one so far. Everything just looks so cramp, especially the living room. The TV seems very out of place. The brother crawling to his own bedroom doesn’t seem functional in the long run. Maybe he should switch the room with the younger one? Or maybe they should switch to a bigger tiny house? Just my suggestion.

I just can't imagine when the kids hit their teenage years and have the "I hate everyone but my friends" stage. You need a lot of space for that phase. I couldn't have handled it living in such tight quarters with my now 19yr old when she was 15-16.

I can't imagine being a teenager and having to crawl in and out of my parents bedroom to get to mine.

I'd say there's room to adapt though, the peephole could easily become a ladder entrance, and he might even decide he wants to build his own tiny to have a private space.

I'm guessing given comments in the opening section about them not having to come up with NZ$1,000,000 to get into the housing market in Auckland that they're hoping to be able to get into the housing market in a more permanent way at some stage in future before that happens. NZ has for a hideously expensive housing market combined with high costs of living and not particularly high incomes. It's so bad many kiwis are looking over at Australia and thinking its cheap here when we're basically in the same situation. To me this is them making the best of a really difficult situation where they don't want to move from employment and family and get hideously into debt.

That was exactly my thought. If the kids were closer in age they’d have a good decade in here, before things get tight, but once they hit 12 they really crave their own space and , a tiny little “treehouse” where you have to crawl past mom & dads room to get there, not optimal. Plus could you imagine a 6’ bulky teen trying to wedge through the catwalk? And when the baby gets a few years older, he could lie in the middle of his floor, and be able to touch all 4 walls simultaneously.

@@Puglover130 yes, I see all these videos with small children and think "I hope this is just temporary for this family". The mood swings and growth of kids seems like it would be the biggest challenge of a tiny house, in my opinion.

Whilst not my favourite layout it is still a wonderful family home. I very much liked seeing how a growing family changed the use of the areas over time. The bedrooms upstairs were simplistic, peaceful and calming, perfect 💖

Thank you for letting us into your cocoon of love. It was an extremely wise decision to start with an affordable tiny home. This could become eventually an airborn place to generate income for your later years. It is a good sound investment. Good luck!!! 🙏
