I heard it had to do with Global warming. Alaska is the fastest warming state, and since the waters around Alaska are getting significantly warmer, the crabs are migrating a lot farther north. It was either that, or mass disease killing them. But iirc it's all still up to speculation right now. So any reason could be right, or a combination of all of them.

That’s what I initially thought too due to sanctions and the war, but ironically I spoke with a fisherman from Alaska like last week and he said it’s due to them migrating to colder/deeper water. He told me he’s seen it happen before, but it was never on a scale this massive.
