Who among us hasn't had to put the fix on the miracle of Chevy shift kludge, They are famous for that it used to be taught in jr. high here in the states. get the lever in neutral, the align the linkage on the column, then wait for it to happen again. That's how Fenton linkage came to be. nobody had money for the good stuff ( HURST)

Ok, not a three speed story but my brother and I jammed a v8 into an old 65 Chevy pickup when we were teenagers. It was a three on the tree but we converted it to automatic with a chunk of threaded rod through the floor to use as a shifter. I was driving one day and my dog jumped on my arm thereby jamming the truck into park at about 40 miles per hour. The engine torqued so much that it broke the distributor cap. Five mile walk home. Replaced the cap and amazingly the transmission worked perfectly fine. It was an old two speed slush bucket.

I had my 71 Chevy Impala stock car chained to the power pole in the alley banging on a fender under tension after a rough Saturday night of racing. Our city attorney drove up and said just so you know, if the power goes out and a crew has to come out on Sunday you will be paying them time and a half plus costs. He lived a block away and saw the lines to the transformer on the pole wiggling with each blow. Needless to say, I moved to the birch tree in the front yard of the house I was renting. Live and learn. BTW the attorney was one of my sponsors and a good friend. Thanks for sparking the memory That was 40 years ago

I wasn't there as I only saw the cave drawings of the incident. According to ancient lore (and the drawings) it seems as though the damage to the front fender occurred when an innocent Triceratops was grazing along a footpath when suddenly, a rogue dinosaur rancher from a neighboring and rival farm decided to attempt to wrangle the competition's herd onto his ranch. The truck crested over a hill (more of a grassy knoll) and struck the Triceratops, breaking off one of it's horns (the Triceratops, not the truck) and scraped the remains 2 horns along the upper side portion of the fender. Hence the offending damage to that area of the offender's fender. On a serious note.... GREAT video on getting the fender roughed in so you're not fighting it when the modifications start. Thanks for keeping us up to date on the progress.

I had a 60 Ford stepside van (milk truck) that used to jam on the 1-2 shift. Which of course always happened in the middle of an intersection after accellerating from a green light. The only fix was to pull over, shut it down and wrestle with the linkage to unjam it. The previous owner had conveniently cut an access hole in the floorboards with a torch. It never occurred to me to fix it - I just didn't have that kind of know-how at age 17 lol.

Delving into the fascinating world of headlight bucket retention hardware, there is a plethora of options one can choose from. I have three classic vehicles and they showcase three of the more regular options one finds.....well, here in New Zealand at least. The 1979 Triumph 2500S has her original factory fitment - Philips head (aka crass-head) sheet metal screws. The 2500S has never been restored and still runs her standard sealed beam headlamps, so either someone was very careful and never dropped one into the abyss or they have never been removed. The 1977 Mini has its buckets pop-rivetted in place. This would have been when the refurbishment of its body was last performed - approx 10 years ago - by the owner two back before I got it. The reason I am able to ascertain such an exact time frame is that the sun-visors, the rear view mirror and several other smallish accoutrements have also been fastened to the bodywork with rivets rather than screws. Its grille, however, is held on by such a range of wood screws, ranging from 3-inch countersunk pozi-drive to one-inch dome-headed standard slot, that I guess they used the screws from everywhere else to hold the grille on. The 1974 Triumph Stag I own was refreshed by a neanderthalic speciman that survived in the hills of the South Island since the last ice age, but who was mistaken for a Beatnik in the late 70s and employed by a local body shop. When the Stag came in for a refresh in the mid-1980s, they gainfully lost every gasket, grommet and seal that they could and then for the piece de resistance, swept the floor of the shop and used whatever screws they found to fit the headlights, grille sections and such. They did take care to ensure that no two screws were the same size, type, thread, drive or head.....and for the 34 screws that make up the headlight and grille panel in the front of the car, that is quite an impressive effort on their part, I feel. There should be an award for that and should I find out who did it, I am certain I can find a suitable piece of lead with which to crown them to show my appreciation. I have been enjoying this series and have learned a fair bit watching you work and listening to the reasons behind what to look for in a panel and why. I then go down to my project Mini (another 1977 beasty) and stare at it for a while before picking up my hammer and dolly and belting another panel back into shape with renewed vigour. It is always interesting to find what is hidden under filler.....and sometimes one wishes one had never picked up the grinder.....but we're here now and that's just the way it is. To say my Mini project is above my skillset is an understatement, but listening to you and others in the trade (or who have been in it for years and retired), learning by having a go is the only way to see whether I can put the tips and tricks to any good effective use....and so far it's fairly promising and better than it was a year or two ago. Besides which - and if nothing else - watching you is inspiring me to work on the thing! So thankyou, my friend. All the best.

Front fenders are 54 and early 55 . They are recessed for the park lights which only came like that those years . I had a 54 that had to have that fender replaced in about 1975 and you would think a lot of fenders like that would be around at that time . Well the body shop found an older one with out that recessed area , so he just cut a hole behind the park light for it to stick back in to . Well it could not be seen from the out side but when I found it later I always told others to not go to the lazy sneaky guy but to find somebody else . A couple of years or less he left town do to not enough work I found out shortly after that , made me smile .😊.

Yes I have had the rare and enviable thrill of lying on my back in snow to overcome one of Ford's better ideas. I lucked out and managed to buy a used Econoline van from Honest Abraham's Dicey Emporium. One day it decided it only needed one front motor mount, it also got lazy and leaned onto the engine bay. Managed to get it into second, and after frequent exposure to the delicious aroma of burning clutch I got home. Yet another occasion, I found myself also flat on my back in mud and water, attempting to hand shift a fire truck's transfer case, thus it is hard to teach me any knew cuse words, but I am continuing my education to learn new and more definitive combinations. Sadly the latest generation lack such skills as they rely heavily on the "f" word. Oh yeah, just about forgot (geezer moment), great work on that tortured fender and explaining for us amateurs the measuring nine ways for Sunday to get stuff to line up.

I am very experienced with the dreaded "three on the tree" lock-up. When I was a kid all our cars were equipped with a large screwdriver under the driver's seat for just such an emergency. I know all too well the sickening feeling as you went from third to first and felt that "clunk" (usually at 5:00pm in rush hour) Cheers from the shed

Fortunately, cars have come a long way since then. No more pesky shift linkage to jam up, no need to carry tools under the seat...just call a tow truck and have it hauled to the nearest dealership, where they will simply remove and replace your 32-speed transmission that is conveniently no longer under warranty.

Kyle, after a closer review of the irreversible damage to the Chicken Truck, including the devastation to the front fender, this does indicate indeed the truck had a rough life and was involved in numerous terrific battles. The forensic evidence shows the chicken truck was in a horrible battle with the mighty Triceratops. Also other battle scars revealed that there’s a 99% chance the Chicken Truck encountered numerous epic battles with one of the most feared and deadly creature to ever walk the face of the earth, none other than the Rustasaurus.

As I dug through the pile while loading it onto the second trailer, I was amazed that all the parts seemed to be there. None of the metal was bare but the disassembling had not gone smoothly. Lots of damage due to rusted fasteners that had refused to come apart. Let's just say, a torch was involved😢 Thanks for the videos!:)

I learned to drive in a 1953 Chevy sedan when I was 13. You probably shouldn't do that anymore. The column standard shift linkage periodically jammed. It was easy enough to fix. You just had to pop the hood and pull up on one linkage levers. I have no urge to remove dents from cars myself, but I like to watch you do it. .

Around 7:40, I saw what looked like smoke and got really excited, but it turned out it was just dust dislodged from the inner fender, falling into the camera. That's okay, this was a fantastic tutorial, even if there was no fire! I have very similar damage to my project--it's funny how a somewhat minor whack to the front will throw the geometry and fit out in enough places, just enough to drive you nuts. Thanks for sharing your craftsmanship and knowledge, I'm really enjoying watching this project take shape!

Very impressive, this upload… I, too, have been felled by the deciduous one-two linkage lockup. Always in traffic, with the “choose your own embarrassment” options of a), proceed very slowly AND loudly in first gear, or b) block traffic with the hood up, jiggle the branches free of each other, thus enabling the old bastard to start rolling off in neutral, precipitating a frantic dash for the cockpit in order to avoid further damage.

Hi Kyle, I heard the bell ring and I knew school was in session. Myself I love hearing your explanation of how the metal reacts when it has an impact on it. When I look at any damage the first thing I do is look for the primary point of impact and then work backwards from there. It’s like a mystery that needs solved, when you explained all of that I was waiting for someone to say how did you know all of that and your answer would be it was elementary my dear Watson. And I was cracking up with your comments missing leg and brain days for all those years. But the jokes aside you have an unbelievable understanding of your craft and a great ability to explain how and what you are doing. I watch and follow many creators who do bodywork on this platform and in my opinion you are one of the best people I follow. And that’s no joke. Attention to detail how meticulous you are in doing your work checking and working and rechecking till you get it done right and to your satisfaction. Have I ever had to untangle a 3 speed linkage alongside the road? Actually hundreds of times. I owned a 64 Rambler Classic. That three on the tree had more wobble in it than my Grandmother’s knees!

The '53 Bel Air shift linkage jams, but only when my husband is driving. I prefer the log chain and tree method for panel pulling. That's probably what was done to the front of that truck. Thanks for more info. and some entertainment.

Sounds like you've mastered the proper 3 on the tree "H" pattern driving technique!

New to the channel, you use a lot of the same tool's i use, and that's whatever's available lol. I have worked on old Chevy's in the past, my bucket list Chevy would be a 36 chevy business coupe. My grandpa was looking for one to restore with me, but died in 1999. The first car he ever drove, and it was brand new, and the guy he worked for as a teenager let him drive it to deliver stuff for him. G-d bless.

I had a Chevy truck with a wore out 3 speed on the column I carried a jack handle under the drivers seat it got hung up all the time . Until I learned it’s little quicks . That fender brace bolting right back in place shows you know what you are doing . There at end you saying the panel had to be straight before you could then start working on it thanks for that . Great video

Yes , by all means. I have had to unstuck shift linkage many times . I've done it on Chevys and Fords . After a couple of years you learn how to shift w/o hanging the linkage up.
