I Accidentally Destroyed This Rare Classic Truck Fender! Don't Make This Mistake!

In this video I'll attempt to rough out the damage on the 1953 Chevy Truck rear fender. This fender is garbage, so I'm just trying to make it into something that would be presentable on a beater.

At 70 years old, I know my opinion don't mean much but if you were my son, I'd sure be bragging about your talents all around town. And I do mean that. There are not many out there who possess the talent and the ambition you display. That is an excellent repair.

You're a metal magician. You rescue pieces that anyone else would scrap. You put more time in on rescuing the part than it is probably worth , but the results are awesome 👍. It would be cost prohibited to have someone do that amount of work unless it was a rare vehicle. I enjoy your talent and patience.

Watching you work teaches me that first you have to learn where the metal will go when you use a hammer and/or dolly on it. It also teaches me that unless you get the metal where it belongs simply forcing it to where you can weld it together and filling in the low spots is a waste of time. I never thought about the techniques and experience it takes to get to where you can fix damage to metal panels.

I've been binge watching your 47 to 55 truck videos this holiday weekend. My Dad was big on this series of Chevy/GMC trucks. He had his own shop in coastal NC for general auto repair but these old trucks were his hobby and passion (I leaned more towards Jeeps). His wrecker was a 47 Chevy 2 ton with a home made wrecker and his daily driver was a 1st series '55 that he restomoded before it was even a thing. The shop included a small junkyard where he kept a few dozen parts trucks. He passed in the early '80s but your knowledge of these trucks reminds me of his. Keep up the good work.

The rear fenders on my37 Chev PU were pretty banged up, but no missing metal from rust. Surprisingly the only real rust was two spots about 2 inches long where the floor pan meets the back of the cab. Currently the fenders are in Minnesota with a guy that has a reputation of a good metal repairman. I could have picked up Fiberglass Repos, but I would rather have all original metal. I'm building a Resto-mod. I've boxed the frame, installed a FATMAN MII front end and an LT1 from a 2014 Silverado. But overall, my intent is for it to appear as close to original but obviously lowered.

You are an artist sir. Much respect for your skills. These skills are being lost unless we get more people interested in manipulating metals. We cant rely on availability of replacement parts and even accurate ones. I really find this interesting, and inspiring, that what most people would write off, can actually be repaired, which is more environmentally friendly than constantly replacing and using huge amounts of filler. As governments want to direct the population towards electric vehicles, I believe that actually what will happen is that repairing older vehicles will be a precious skill that we should encourage. Electric vehicles in rural areas may prove to be impractical and the older trucks and cars will be valued.

There are a hundred guys filing points and getting old junkers running again. But I started watching your videos because of your appearance on CWM and enjoy the obvious skill sets shown on both channels now. It's a mystery to me why you guys don't have more subscribers.

When you are manipulating a fender with a big tear like that it really shows how much form adds to structural integrity. One forgets that when looking at the nice aesthetics of a curve but that curve means more strength with less material and internal bracing. I'm a big fan of form following function.

Loved the short shot of the beautiful Tuxedo and Orange purr babies. Oh, and for what it will eventually be, that fender looks perfect.

Excellent presentation. You give the viewer a real sense of the scope of work required to repair that ridiculously hopeless fender. You have really been cranking the videos out lately and your work is appreciated.

i wish i could figure out how to enter a time warp like you do. for me, 6 hours of pounding panels into submission is a little stressful, but you've figured out how to do it in a matter of minutes. i doff my cap to you good sir.
