Dermatologist, Dr. Sandy Skotnicki, says modern skincare routines are vastly over aggressive and our natural oils can do wonders for anti-aging, complexion and even bacteria.
The problem is most people would never naturally do this or even fail to do this after watching something like this, simply because your body and skin take time to adjust. So if you try it for a week or something you WILL be more greasy and dirty - especially if you stop washing your hair so you will give in and use soap again. But if you get through that your body and hair will indeed adjust and basically learn again how to 'self clean'. That's what we're designed to do.
Agree with ya I stopped using shampoo for almost 3 months and 2weeks after not using shampoo i was feeling soooo dirty and greasy even tho i was showering my hair with water every day but i feel that my hair now is so healthier than it used to be b4 so iam grateful for not using the shampoo and that I saved my hair from all the chemicals and now im trying not to use body cleanser
@@WhitemenaresoSexy Because you'd not only be wasting water and energy you'd also be washing away your body's natural oils. Why don't you just cut the lawn with a pair of scissors instead of a lawnmower while you're coming up with useful suggestions. Did you even watch the video? The answer to your question is there.
I live at the equator. Nobody can get away with not showering for a week, not even our great grandmothers. We bathe twice a day generally. But I will try to bathe without soap and only wash essentials.
How about lemon, orange, sandalwood? Have not used soap for two weeks BUT I have used these mixtures having sandalwood, citrus fruit, yoghurt and sugar. Basically citric acid, lactic acid and glycolic acid. I use my kessa glove dip it in, scrub. If I have time like weekend night, I put my audio book in a measuring jar in the corner of the bathroom and sit with this stuff on for 30 min, scrub and wash off. Since I have dry skin and keratosis, I dab on extra virgin coconut oil right after towelling.
@@divyababu8327 I started using benzoyle peroxide in my armpits and bits and this was a skin game-changer. My ancestors used herbs and stuff, but BP in a few spots then rinsing the whole body has been best. I am generally careful these days with yoghurt and other forms of lactic acid. They make you sensitive to burning in the sun, so I only use on my feet as a peel for calouses.
I agree that we're using too many products, but ya'll need to be washing with some kind of cleanser if not soap!!! Some of ya don't wash your backs and I can smell your body GREASE as it is!
I stopped using soap on my face. My skin literally cracks and eventually use oil blend moisturizer with bronners soap which I use in certain areas the peas lol but others are just warm water and then cold water. Skins not cracking and my skin smells and feels great. I went outside with no lotion which usually is impossible for me bc my skin crawls without and with this new regimen my skin is just glowing and stays filled with moisture. Also drinking water helps with smell issues and of course skin hydration. it’s been several months I stopped using on the market soaps and 1 week with the water regimen. The key is the water shouldn’t be too hot as well. and always finish with colder water. My blemishes and everything cleared up . I hope it continues. I knew ppl who used only water to wash their face and always thought their skin was amazing but thought bc they had “good skin”. now I find that as kids we all had good skin until hormonal breakouts pushed us to put all types of acids and things on our faces. That’s when my face got worse and more dependent on products. Now my skin glows and all I use is water :)
The Effect Soap has on the human body: Water alone can wash away dirt from your skin by sheer force, but because water doesn't mix with oil, it is ineffective in removing oily buildup. In order to get rid of excess oils from your skin, soaps have to have bonding power. True soap is made up of fatty acids, which contain a chain of connected hydrogen, carbon and oxygen atoms. One end of this chain is lipophilic - it is attracted to oils. The other end of the chain is hydrophilic, or attracted to water. When you lather up, the lipophilic ends of the molecules pick up the grease and oils on your skin. When you rinse, the hydrophilic ends of the molecules follow the water, letting you rinse the soap molecules -- and their attached impurities -- away. Soap is a Bipolar cleaning product that is Lipophilic and Hydrophilic. Lipophilic: is attracted oils and fats, that's why when you wash or lather up, it literally picks up the dirt/oil off of your skin, Water alone doesn't do that. Hydrophilic: is attracted to water, this is what enables you to rinse off the lather that's combined with the oil, dirt and other impurities from the skin, again water alone doesn't do that.
Jeez... That was long but worthy and correct. The amount of hatred that soap got starting about 30 years ago and at ciclical waves can only be explained as 1st world pet peeves. You don't Need to scrub your skin with harsh soap Many times a day! Just give your skin a Quick massage with small amount and rinse well. It has to be good quality real soap, Better if olive oil based. Unless your skein Is totally alipidic a little soap (inevitabily alcaline) Will trap bacteria. Only water Will take water out but leave oil buildup. Synthetical detergent are the worst, especially the ones on shelves at supermarket. Ready well. Most of times they are Just harsh SLS/SLES watery blends packed with "cream" and artificial perfume. They don't clean well and they leave a greasy film that Is not hydrating at all! Also synth perfumes add to body smell. The only lab-made extra gentle detergents for skin are betaines but you won't easily find a cleanser made exclusively of betaines because they are expensive and they don't lather much.
Soap won't stop sweat.. I use soap rarely.. I sweat easily I especially don't use soap in summer because the day i use it my sweat smells even worse Skin absorbs the fragrance of soap and comes out with the sweat
It was suggested by 2 of my family members to stop using cleansers or any skin care products of my face to clear of up my recent chin acne and it cleared up in 3 days. It was strange at first. I do not need a moisturizer anymore either. My skin is normal. I just remove any makeup with bamboo washable pads.
I hear you. She sounds crazy to me. I mean, you're absolutely filthy, and you're just supposed to rinse off with water? Your face would literally look dirty all the time! Of all cleansers, soap removes dirt and grease the best, and some of us get really dirty and greasy through the course of a day.
ooga booga most of us have been conditioned by advertisements (see the old ivory soap commercials) that we need products to survive. this does not jibe with evolutionary biology, which suggests that our bodies have evolved in the absence of widely abundant products. tldr; water is fine, dont need the soap!
Here in Nigeria, it’s HAWT! Sweating is expected during dry season, rainy season things cool down considerably. Because of sweat we use soap in the morning usually, and if we’re around the house and it gets unbearably hot we ‘pour water’. That’s literally just pouring water without soap to rinse the body and cool it down. Then before bed we bathe with soap again. ❤
I don’t even let water touch my face most days and my skin isn’t super oily and shiny anymore, I do shower everyday and wash my junk with soap and that’s all that’s needed
My nanna has used a soap bar and a cloth to clean her self since she was a child and she’s stunning for her age I think the problem today is all the other crap bath oils body butters deodorant ect a good bar of soap and a good moisturiser is all ya need
I agree with the doctor I have been using soap and shower gel and after using it my prostate is burning like hell it's been 3 years this thing happening, I just realized that before taking a bath my prostate is not burning at all so when I stopped using soap I began to see change in 24 hours I don't know what to use now coz am bathing with only water am feeling different from the day I stopped using soap
@@kevinkall8547 anything can go into the body through pores, anti - bacteria soap are too strong and chemicals are being added they can be harmful to the skin.
Lol cause perhaps one of them don't use soap to smell nice. Tho I'm not gonna lie I have mostly only while in the shower washed just my hair, armpits, groin, and butt and while just letting water run over my torso back and legs scrubbing a little bit sometimes with a ragband had came out smelling nice and feeling refreshed tho idk about not ever using soap again 😅
I didnt use soap for my face for many years and the skin is perfect. I just use it very rarely, only if i need to clean it from dirt and dust let's say after fixing walls with plaster etc.
It's not the oil i find smells, it's sweat and sweat washes away with water. I only use soap every other shower and in limited areas. I don't think i smell... i hope.
@ 2:10 A dermatologist told me once, "your grandmother took a bath once a week on a Saturday night and that was good enough for her!" I thought he was crazy. He also told me I could take a bath as long as I wanted but couldn't take the bar of soap with me. (Said I could add whatever bath product to the water). BUT a shower had a 30-second limit. Yes, he said 30 seconds. I had significantly dried out my skin from lengthy showers and too much soap, thus my needing to see a dermatologist. Lastly, he said there are only 4 areas a woman needs to apply soap: underarms, between toes, legs & breasts.
Wait she said instead of using a soap ….which is made from oils etc…. Use a synthetic detergent? Oh and only wash 1 a week but wash under arms and privates regularly…so the bacteria on the rest of or body is good to go?
i just using gentle soap and my skin is flawless.my twin bro use fancy expensive face wash. but he got a lot of acne and acne scars. dont always believe in derma. see the ingredients in facial wash compare to just basic soap. now you judge.
The products the dermo recommended for me contained drying ALCOHOL and FRAGRANCE!! I stopped going to the dermo's and cleared up my skin with my own research. I cut that bad stuff out. And I use a gentle cleanser, basic moisturizer, marula oil and also retinol (retinol a few times a week); and of course sunscreen.
False. It's actually the opposite. Using soaps increases your body odor because the more your step toe body the more susceptible your barrier is to these bacteria that cause the pussies in the first place creating an even greater need for the soap, it's a perpetual cycle of never being clean enough.
I live in phil summer all year round. I dont use soap and believe me i smell like a normal person. I just use oats, rice milk and tomato for body scrub.
Water is the best way to clean your body, and you use soaps in your problem areas and places where there is skin contact: groin, underarms, breasts, etc.
How about steroids in lightening creams compounded by dermatologists who don't inform and tell you to use them on your face for 90 days? Doesn't that cause rosacea, atrophy, and scarring, Dr. Skotnicki?
@@rosemary.-6576not all bacteria is bad. In fact our skin has a biome just like our guts. Removal of the food bacteria allows the proliferation of the bad bacteria Because the food bacteria takes time to build up and never gets the chance to because of the frequent cleaning. Smell a baby, do they stink naturally? That's an example of our body's having a natural good odor.
Showering with hot, chlorinated water + soap is a chemical cocktail that strips your skin of its natural oils and compromises it as a natural barrier. I shower with body temperature water, use a chlorine filter and do not use soap. My skin feels clean, not overly dried out and I hope has a healthy microbiome because of it. As a man, I also think it helps not to overly expose myself to PCBs and other androgen blockers that may be in these random products and are absorbable through the skin.
@@hocineted7594 yes you can!! As a matter of fact I had a toenail that had an infection that is now cleared since I started this routine. I use a washcloth and scrub with water. I think humidity and darkness (the things fungus want) in addition to microbial imbalance (some microbes may compete with or otherwise keep fungus in check) is the main culprit in foot odor. I like to think of soap as a medicine for when you have a broken barrier. Skin is a barrier, but if you have a cut you need to keep the bacteria from getting into your blood. We should not be using soap on a daily but when you need it when there is a breach. It’s like not taking Tylenol on a daily basis but just when needed (or not at all in my case!)
@@Jmwangs just saw this! I do use a washcloth for gentle scrubbing. I’m still washing just not doing it with soaps (hydrophilic + hydrophobic) which strip the oils and kill bacteria. I live in a warm climate so I don’t usually need much moisturizer which I think can also clog pores and block natural skin oil production. When I use body temp water and a chlorine filter, it’s amazing my skill seems like it still has its natural oils! Occasionally I’ll dab a bit of shea butter on my elbows which seem not to be producing much oils but nothing else!
I would not agree that this applies to people with extreme acne prone skin or oily skin yes it is your natural defense and some of it is good for you but if you don't remove some of that extra you're going to have some severe problems and skin issues
My acne got worse as soon as I started cleansing with soap. I continued for years and tried many acne products but it never went away. Now i only use water on my face and very rarely a toner and my acne has cleared up, my skin isnt greasy. It's normal.
Actualy, the real oilly type skin doesnt have as much oil. Its just abit more oily compared to normal skin type. Then soap makes it more oily. When we switch to no soap (only sponge exfoliate), it takes time for our skin to adjust to a healthy oil production. Maybe a month or two. So be patient
when you shower you really only need to wash your groin, underarm, rear, and feet. THe rest of you can be washed with just water and you can wash with soap once a week those areas
Is it just me, but my skin gets worse when I don't use soap. I tried not taking a bath for days or even take a shower without using soap and acnes were everywhere lol but when I went back to my old routine which was bathing with soap everyday, my body acne went away plus my skin is more glowing. Is skin type plays a big role tho?
If you stop using soap there is an adaptation period of 2 weeks. Before you see good result. Think of this animals in the wild do not smell bad as compared to animal pets who undergo constant baths. It is about allowing the skin bacteria to adjust
That's in the design of the product. Think addiction. Your body develops a dependency and when you stop using your issues get exponentially worse quick and you are almost force to use again. Remember these products were created by scientists funded by rich/wealthy for profit.
Philippines is a Tropical Country , Humidity here is unbearable especially during Dry Season, Not taking a shower more than one in a day is a bad Idea.
@@moeketsithabangsiziba1165 no bc I work from home anyway unless if I am doing something substantial every single day then yes I will try to more often but I typically don’t have much activity
Try to use not so hot water, out skin wasn’t made to make contact with hot water. It’s not the worst thing in the world but washing with warm, lukewarm or cold water is better for your skin.
I must say I stopped using soap on my face when I turn 14, but I still use it in my body skin I realised now why my skin is so dry, I will stop hahaha It's also funny that some of my friends when they ran out of soap they actually used Synthetic detergent to take showers haha I'd rather use a good Cleanser
Its been 3 months since i washing my face with only water, however i use purifying cleansing gel only at night after taking off my makeup cuz i have oily combo sensitive skin… My face feels way good ;)
There's real soap (sodium/potassium-salts of fatty acids) which builds up soap scum in hard water and then there are synthetic detergents (short syndet) like SLS/SLES (check your shampoo, liquid soap, tooth paste). Some like Dove. are a combination of those two www.stephensonpersonalcare.com/blog/2014-12-09-soap-vs-syndet en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soap en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soap_scum en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Detergent en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sodium_laureth_sulfate
I'll stick to my Ivory soap been using it since I was a kid and I'm 55 now not only do I use it on my entire body but I wash my dishes and clean my house with it wash my hands no way I'm touching synthetic crap
I'm genuinely scared because recently now I've been rubbing shower gel all over my scrotum area for self pleasure without adding water to dilute it. I've read that shower gel is harmful to the skin and has long term cancer affects which has sent me panicking into a unsettled depression. After I was done doing with what I had to do, the next day my whole scrotum area was really dry and wrinkly and also the end of my foreskin was red. I used large amounts of it over the weeks because it felt nice in sacrifice for the soreness I felt, but now I won't do it ever again. Another thing that's worried me is the skin on the penis is very thin so it absorbs chemicals very quick. I just feel like I have no one to turn to, so some help would be appreciated.
NO WAY!!! I have eczema and if I don’t exfoliate my skin and keep it clean, I’m done!! My aunt tried to sell me this ish a few years by telling me to only bathe three times a week. I said, “NEGATIVE!”
I have eczema too and trust soap is very bad for it. It makes it much much worse. In the winter months I have to constantly wash my hands because of my job and due to the cold my skin dries out really bad and I get breakouts. Trust em when they tell you.. it's a unsavory truth to be told you've been something wrong your entire life, especially when everyone in your family and everyone else in your life does it as well. But it's the truth nonetheless, same as brushing your teeth weakens and kills the good bacteria in your mouth.
@Tommy Harris I will not change it. I strongly believe that White men are So Sexy. They have pretty White Skin, Straight hair some have blue, grey or hazel eyes. Let's face it, The majority of them eat right, exercise. You always see them in the street jogging, running or bicycling or running a marathon. They're always drinking water, if you go food shopping, they're always buying fruits, vegetables, whole grain breads, cereals, lean meats & proteins. Water by the Gallon or the Pack. A lot of them shower and wear clean clothes, shave, use deodorant, wear cologne and aftershave. A lot of them work hard everyday and so does Hispanic men, they're sexy too, I love their work Ethic.. Ok, So, Yes that's why my profile is "White men are So Sexy", because I believe it and its actually true 😉😉
Lady you don't understand... I literally smell bad if I don't wash this body lol People bathed once a week a hundred years ago because plumbing was a luxury. They also smelled extremely bad and had to rely on perfumes and lots of clothing to mask the odors.
How about someone invents a soap that is dermatologist recommended, actually hypoallergenic, and doesn't destroy this so-called barrier. Because I love soaps. And I use shea butter, lotions and oils to replenish my barrier.
@@tommyharris5817 There is a ton off studies correlating them. Your advice is outdated. Also, using water only is even better for people with acne because soap increases P. ACNE bacteria develop more, irritates more the skin and make it more open to infection.
Ummm that’s gross. I know that lady in the pink don’t scrub her legs n feet. Nothing wrong with soap if you use it correctly. Especially how they pushing using “synthetic detergents” instead. Got it backwards for sure
That's just nasty, I agree with the over use of products especially women but men already complain that women stink when it comes to love making and women complain about the same, now we being told that's OK, please.
Bull crap - I can't speak for other races, but as a black male, I don't know any black person who developed bad skin as a result of showering at least once a day.
