Today we are taking another look at the epic little HBX 901A Desert Buggy which was my favourite RC car at the start of the year!
It remains as one of my favourites especially if your looking for a budget basher and today we take another look!
The release of the WLTOYS 144010 means it now faces tough competition as that is an awesome little buggy out the box!
There is no doubt thought the 901A is a serious contender and worthy of its cheap price tag!

So what do you think of the HBX 901A?
Better than the WLTOYS?
If you are looking for a cheap potentially track ready all rounder then the wltoys may be the better option once set up correctly.
That said the 901A is a seriously capable machine and is certainly up there with the best!

The 901A by HBX is an awesome truck but is it better than the 144010? I love mine and it goes everywhere with me! I think if you are looking for a 2s/3s capable basher which is larger than the wltoys then this is perfect! Its built tough and durable, its quick and its cheap! It ticks so many boxes! I stumbled on to your channel this past Xmas. I watched some vids on the 144001 and ended up buying one the next day. Now it's a brushless truggy that looks a lot like the 901a, but does 50 mph on 2s. I want my next car to be a kit or roller. I love building almost as much as driving. Thanks for your part in helping me get started in this awesome hobby.

Just got mine, my first RC car for almost 4 decades, I had one as a kid, a Tamiya one if I recall correctly, I'm more of a helicopter/plane guy. Seems really nice, price/quality definitely has improved since the 80:s, back then most cars were rear wheel drive, 4WD ones were really expensive, speed controllers were mechanical rheostats operated by a servo. And the motors of course were brushed and batteries NiCad. Going out to try it soon, just checked in the living room to see everything works as intended. Seems powerful. A question: The diffs seem to be completely "open", no resistance to turning the other wheel, shoud I fill at least the rear one with heavierd oil/silicon ear plugs to improve traction?

I don't know why people worry so much about "it's plastic, it has little metal" when the composite currently used in RC cars of almost any brand has proven to be as resistant or more than metal. We keep in mind that the metal tends to split in case of severe impact, or to bend while the plastic... It tends to return to its original position. A clear example is in my Inferno MP9e Evo 2, a lot of metal here and there: One hard hit and it's history. My Mad Van VE, based on the Fazer MK2 chassis is 90% plastic and has withstood what my inferno couldn't. For me, the subject of plastic is not a problem. I just got into RC. I did some research and bought the 144001 as my first car. I also have the 901a coming tomorrow. The 144001 is great on pavement and really short grass. I bought the 901a to bash and jump. I found some bike parks in my area and going to try them both there. Great channel! Keep up the good work! Wisconsin USA

After giving the car an absolute skatepark hammering, I’ve only had the screws pulls through on one diff and as full metal diffs are available as spares,just swapped. Then most recently I lost some teeth in the rear drivetrain. Again, spares are easily available including from FTX in the U.K. (as it’s the same drivetrain as the hbx 16889a pro/flyhal fc600/upgraded FTX tracer). Those looking to stay 2S but wanting a little more power,you can rotate the motor mount and use a 14t pinion. With slightly bigger wheels and a 14t I get 30mph, which is a lot more manageable than it’s behaviour on 3S. I think the choice between this and the WL is quite straightforward. If you drive primarily off road, this is the better option. If you drive primarily on road, get the WL. If you like skateparks it’s a no brainer - get this, an hbx16889a pro or flyhal fc600 or go bigger with a TA Rival mt10

Hi, I like that car myself. Ordered two (one for my wife and one for me) and pretty happy with it as rc noobs. Only Problem we have is that one of the two cars has a widened space around the nut on the left rearwheel and we still wait for answers from banggoods customersupport. Otherwise nothing to complain yet.

if parts were so available as for the 16889 i would have bought one but instead opted for the 16889a pro version and have no regrets. after a few packs of batteries, rear tires are getting bold while my brushed still has stock tires after 9 months....this shows the difference in power...

Quite a few 16889a pro parts are a direct fit for the 901a, fortunately. The metal diffs are bigger on the 901a but unlike the fantastic 1:16 models, have been available as complete units from day one.

Im still confused because i have a pirate shaker, it looks completly similar but mine is brushed and i dont know if the T2M brand stole the look of this rc or the brand for this rc stole it but from the video i definetly prefer the brushless one

how does this compare to 16889a? specially the handling? I like the 901a more but i hear it could brake faster than 16889a

Hi..some of your clips from this video are from the car itself. Can I mount a GoPro 10 to this car?! You've obviously mounted some sort of camera to it. Is there a specialist mounting kit or something? Thanks.

I have the bezgar hm124 it's exactly the same just different name on the body shell. I really do like it alot however after a month I stripped the pinion and broke a tooth on the spur and the bearing on the front of the spur was done seals gone and balls falling out. I will say bezgar has made it right they send a new motor with pinion and esc new bearing kit and a new spur with center drive shaft and bevel gears. All sent to me for free under the 90 day warranty. Even though I have a different brand I still have this exact same truck and even with the little issues I've had I would highly recommend it to anyone

Its awesome! the bezgar is identical and like you mentioned just different branding! Its nice being a little bigger than the wltoys stuff too which makes is appealing! 😎👍

I agree the dogbones and cvs are way better quality that wltoys and the diffs have grease haha and the gears in general are just way better quality and you're right about hbx(bezgar) plastics they are amazing it's really mind blowing how flexible they are. I added a fan to my motor and one on the esc bc it's really hot and humid where I live...but even without them it ran pretty cool but I've got the 14t pinion on order so I'm gonna need some air movement.

@@jameswisecarver you are. It gets a lot lot hotter with the 14t. It was 23 deg C where I live and it was getting way too hot running even in short grass. Can you let me know what fan you added and how you connected it up ?

@@patmarcus172 the esc fan I robbed off another esc and it plugged straight up to the esc it works great it's small like a 24mm. The other fan did give up the ghost but it was old missing 2 blades and I'm sure this is highly frowned upon but I just soldered it to the back side of the Dean's connector where the battery plugs up. It was a big fan that I screwed down to the heat sink on the motor. Again I know that's not wired correctly too much voltage but it was old and halfway broken anyways and I'm sure my incorrect wiring led to its eventual malfunctioning.

interesting how you have the Maxx V2 as your 2nd favorite big RC. Rich Duperbash reckons it's one of the worse handling RCs out of the box he's ever had. The HBX 901 is pretty cool and we know HBX is tough.

I think its down to personal opinion a lot of the time! I have heard good and bad about it to be fair! Only driven one once and found it to be decent but again that's just me! 😐

This truck may be good for a newbie but for a seasoned basher it's junk the mid motor design puts a lot of stress on the main gear and no center diff or slipper clutch it chews up gears like no tomorrow. I got this truck to tinker around with when I get home from work in front of my house and all l did was chew up gears on it I got rid of it l thought it was junk.

Nothing odd about it. I have been in this hobby forever lost count of the amount of rc bashers I have built. At the moment l have a fully modified Arma big rock and a teckno rc MT 410 my trucks look like dots in the sky when I jump them but I wanted something to mess around with in front of my house when I got home from work so l figured l would try out the hbx trucks. I have come to the conclusion that they are junk. They are nothing but newbie trucks. The tiny 16889pro is the only truck that l like from hbx the rest are junk that I tried the worst was the 901a with it's mid motor design and direct drive train nothing but a gear and diff eater. Poorly designed junk.@@beyondRC

Sounds like you had a bad experience. I also have lots of Arrmas and xmaxx etx. It's no comparison to the big name stuff but I think a lot of people know there is no comparison to the likes of arrma/traxxas etc in that price range but they are ideal for beginners starting out. I wouldn't say junk I think that's a bit extreme. Lots of people including myself love the little thing. Cheers

Anybody that has a shred of intelligence in this hobby wouldn't compare Arma with hbx. Hbx are newbie trucks nothing more. Had no bad experience with hbx trucks. I just came to the conclusion that they are junk. I call it like l see it.
