We just got an update to last night's spitting situation with K'andre Miller and Drew Doughty... we'll talk about all that and more on today's NHL hockey news video!
As a Rangers fan I'm hoping the fact that Doughty thought it was an accident, K'Andre apologized, etc. means no suspension, but I think 1 game would be acceptable as you do still need be careful and not spit on another player even if it was an accident.
Also a ranger fan, i think there does still need to be at least a 1 game suspension, you don't want to set a precedent where someone just says "it was an accident" and does not get punished because then we will be seeing a lot more "accidents".
@@phantomJK yea you don’t accidentally spit on someone’s face, he means he wasn’t thinking straight. 1-3 games honestly no place for stuff like that. As a kings hater.
I think even a single game suspension would be a massive over reaction. The amount of dirty hits in this league that see barely any response from the PSA only for this to result in a suspension?
Marchand will learn from this.... "I was looking the other way when I spit in his face. Clearly an accident" He'll practice this with a mannequin at home😁
Absolutely. From the explanation, it sounds like it wasn't intentional and if Doughty accepts Miller's apology, then it's all good. You still have to be careful with other players around so a game suspension sounds fair.
C'mon, man! It was a scrum. There were players all around him, at close quarters. Even if he didn't intend to land it on somebody, it was at the very least reckless and unnecessary. You just don't do that in a crowd! You don't have to intend to trip someone to get a tripping penalty; just putting your stick between the player's legs accidentally is enough. Most penalties aren't strictly intentional: shooting the puck over the glass, high-sticking, often interference, hooking, etc. You are supposed to be in control of yourself on the ice, ffs. At least 2 games to send a message.
It was malicious, though. If Doughty spit in Miller’s face do you honestly think he’d get the benefit of the doubt? I don’t, and nobody in this exact situation should.
It doesn't look intentional. He wasn't even looking at Doughty when he did it and even Drew said he didn't know if it was intentional. That said, the league cannot let this slide. He has to get at least a 1 game suspension.
brother if you dont think him lookinng into drew doughtys eyes and then spitting in his face is intentional you have some kind of debilitating mental handicap
When you work out a lot your spit gets all slimy and thick and they just spit it out. I believe him. Like if Marchand did this i'd be like nah man you did on purpose.
He was literally looking him directly in the face when he spit and then looked away after... with that many people around any normal person wouldn't spit unintentionally without fully turning away 😆
I think a 1 game suspension will likely happen and is warranted since he did spit on Doughty, regardless of intent or lack thereof. However, outside of the league being involved in any consequence, I think this is between these two players. If Drew and Key are on good terms after it, then I think that should be good enough. I’ve seen so many hypotheticals flying around on twitter and, at the end of the day, it happened, Key apologized, Drew accepted, and it’s over. Everyone can have their opinions but they shouldn’t matter. Key is a great young player and I think he’s still got his best years ahead of him. Hope he doesn’t let this get him down. Doughty is a 2 time Stanley cup winner, I’m sure he’s fine lol
@@notorioustbg yeah, apparently. So for everyone keeping track at home, you can lick your opponents (Marchand), you can punch them in the head and slam them into the ground and just pay a $5,000 fine (Wilson), but GOD FORBID you own up to spitting on someone regardless of intent lol. I get it, slippery slope. You let one guy slide because he apologizes and the guy he spit on says he’s cool with the guy and all of a sudden soon every case of spitting is “unintentional”. Doesn’t mean I have to like it and that it doesn’t piss me off!
High possiblity it was accidental. But I still believe there should be a suspension. While intent should be taken into the conversation, he still spit on someone.
It is believable, it actually happened to me when I was a kid 14-15. I was sitting on a bench with my cousin, where we were sitting facing each other. I was on my phone looking downwards and without thinking I spat in front of me and turn my head back down to the phone, then I realized what have I done and slowly turn my head upwards. I will never forget his expression when I turned my head, I almost pissed myself, he had my ugly spat right bellow his eye next to his nose. I started laughing so hard and was apologizing so much, he knew it wasn’t intentional and eventually let him dry it off with my shirt. Luckily he didn’t take a revenge, but yeah shit happens man.
If it were an accident he should still be suspended. If you accidently hit someone in the head you get suspended. I believe it was an accident. If it were on purpose he more than likely would have been looking eye to eye with Doughty when it happened.
Dude accidentally spit on a guy and everyone jumps down his throat. After he apologized this should’ve been over. A match penalty for this is ridiculous. The NHL is becoming so buttoned up it’s pointless to try to make sense of anything. If your calling for a suspension you really need to reevaluate the situation. Some of the pettiest shit I have ever seen.
I believe this too. As long as K'andre and Drew are cool, then I think it's over and done with. Good on K'andre for talking to Doughty after the game. I think a few earnest words in person, after the fact can go a long way, and I think most players are willing to accept most apologies, even in a weird case like this.
Had he just apologized I’d not know. But the amount of apologizing and the fact he immediately did so and the other things he stated make me believe him.
Whether intentional or not he should be suspended. If the NHL wants to treat players equally they should punish players equally. Even if accidental this type of behavior is inexcusable
As a Kings fan I think it probably was accidental just seeing "how" it went down, but it's a situation where just because of what happened the call on the ice was correct and a 1 game suspension should happen as well. For anyone asking, I thought Lemieux shoulda got a bigger suspension than he did last year as well. Just headed those off at the pass :)
Accident or not he did it and should be punished Not even just because that is how it works in most cases, but because it would lead to problematic situations down the line when someone intentionally tries to make it look like an accident
As a fan of neither team, I’m still glad this came out. Wasn’t really a good look for the sport and I was a fan of Miller so it’s good to see it wasn’t on purpose. I think the video replay of what he said to his teammate supports that.
Not an accident. Nobody’s a bigger Rangers fan than I am but this disgusting act really p’d me off. Why make excuses for Miller? Doughty was right directly in front of him. No way he didn’t see him. That’s nonsense.
dog hockey players spit out of habit every 3 seconds. if you go to warmups they start warmups by spraying water all over the bench and then spitting all over in it lmao. It's just habitual.
Dude you didn’t show the right clip. You keep showing him spitting from the bench. When you watch what actually happened he very very clearly spit in the guys face when they were in a confrontation. No way this was a misunderstanding or accident. He spat in his face.
Eck, if you truly believed it was an accident, you wouldn't have edited out the incident. Miller preps his loogie, looks right at Doughty and waits...then fires. Everyone does something they regret, but this was 100% intentional.
I mean he clearly looked at Doughty and then spat WHILE KEEPING EYE CONTACT like bruh you ain't foolin anyone. You did something stupid in the heat of the game but you still did it. Don't pretend like you fucking didnt mean to. L for miller what an L player, no respect for him
I don't think he meant to do this. Miller is a rough hitter, not a Drew Spitter. The league should look at it, though all the players involved seem like it's accidental.
If you can get a penalty for accidentally high sticking or tripping someone or even shooting the puck over the glass out of your own end, accidentally spitting on someone should have some sort of repercussion. Your intentions seem to not matter when getting a penalty, intent shouldn’t matter when you spit on someone
I believe him. At first I was so upset with him but seeing the replay it looked too nonchalant for it to be intentional.. there was no anger on his face and it totally is not the K.Miller I know. I agree that it’s gonna wind up being a one game suspension because it was not intentional. These guys are responsible for their sticks, they are also responsible for their spit and that was flat out gross.
When the NHL goes to hand out post-game penalties/fines/suspensions, they should talk to the injured player as well, get his take on the situation, and at the very least, take that into consideration before they hand out their punishment.
It’s like putting a car in reverse when you thought it was in drive🤷♂️ It’s probably a braindead mistake but at the end of the day you’re responsible for your mistakes. It seems like Miller is ready to accept responsibility fully and any punishments along with it so he really does seem like a genuine stand up player to me.
Relieved by the update that this was unintentional. This is something I would hate to see happen in hockey. And from such a nonconfrontational player. But maybe like with the stick, he should be careful to the spit down too--no high spitting lol.
I believe him. In incidents like these,, if a player says he didnt mean to, we just look at this player's history. If it was a biting tkachuk or a licking Marchand spitting on the guy it would be another story. Doughty himself doesnt look like he's mad about it after the game
@@who9523 you're 100% correct, they both do so many "ratty" plays that I got them mixed up. Both incidents i was thinking about were againt LA, that's why. One of the brothers speared Quick in the eye after the whistle, and the other brother GOT BIT by Lemieux.
As soon as I saw the replay for the first time, I believed it was accidental. A faux pas type situation. Even his reaction when the match penalty was given, kind of like "shit I really didn't intentionally mean to do that and I can't believe I'm getting tossed for it, but acknowledge it's the right thing so I can't fight it or be mad. ". It was like being disappointed in yourself. The length of penalty is ridiculous though, when guys intentionally hit dudes in the head and get suspended 1 game.
I play in a rec league and in the rinks we play in, on the benches, there's no spitting sign placed up. Hockey players do it instinctively. i know as i do all the time not knowingly so its a hard habit to break
I'm a huge Kings fan and and big Doughty fan, and I don't think a suspension is warrented here. If the player apologized and the other player is good with it, lets all move on.
he has no history of behaviour like this, first offense, handled it well (apologized to player/fans), took complete ownership, etc. 1 game suspension maybe but tbh the league should maybe just slap a fine on him and that's it.
Unintentional? Probably. Should he get suspended? Probably. Shitty situation for sure, but hey if a player accidentally high sticks someone it’s a penalty because a player must have control of their stick. I think the same should apply with a player spitting. Just my opinion of course
As a Kings fan I don't think it was in purpose. Doughty had nothing against him nor did anything to incite it. I think Drew would have definitely been angry and spoke up in the interview. Also, don't think a suspension is needed.
Just like every player is responsible for their stick, they're also responsible for their spit. Both are extensions of their bodies and, as such, should be regarded as items capable of causing grievous bodily or mental harm. 2-3 games at a minimym, intentional or not.
Coming from a non-Ranger's fan. There was no malicious intent or to injure and it was just a stupid mistake, a gross one at that. One game is enough to send the message to be careful where you spit.
Feels like the league cannot ignore the situation, even if it was accidental, but a fine seems like it'd be enough. As you said, considering he got a misconduct during the game, suspending him feels like it's a bit much, IMO.
The circumstances do not to incite a spit. It appeared to be a 'dry-mouth' spit but it is still disgusting. He needs to have more self control. He apologized & Doughty accepted. Good enough for me. (I don't like the silver or gold helmets either LOL)
When you're out there flying around and you finally get a whistle, you're out of breath, you're brain is all foggy and you're not really thinking, it sometimes instinctive to spit once the play is "over." I do it in beer league every now and then when lining up for a draw, or as soon as I make it to the bench. One time I sat on the bench after a really long shift, exhausted and went to spit on the ice and accidentally caught a referee in the midsection who was zooming by our bench. Thankfully he didn't notice, but I felt awful after it happened and thought to myself "I better be more aware of my surroundings if I'm spitting next time." And now I always make a point to stand up and aim it down at the ice. Accidents happen. Still should receive a small suspension just to send a message to him and the league that you can't do this, ever. Two games minimum I think is appropriate, and then if he ever does it again, throw the book at him.
I think Miller is one of the more underrated players on the team. I love the guy. However, I can't see how this would be accidental. What I think is that after the game Miller's mom called him and gave him an earful. The minute he was tossed, I thought, "He's gonna hear from his mom!" She's super supportive of him and I know they have close relationship, so it would honestly surprise me if she wasn't watching and didn't call him up. "I'm not angry, K'Andre. I just disappointed."
You can see it on slow mo that he wasn't even looking at Doughty when he was spitting. Drew skated into him hockin' a loogie. This was completely blown out of proportion. Most people who intend to spit at someone will aim at their face. Miller was aiming downward with it and looking downward. Google Dustin Byfuglien accidentally spitting on someone, or Jonathan Bernier doing it to an ice crew member. It happens more than people think, and not intentionally.
I'm a Kings fan but I believe Miller. I was very impressed with his play last season in the playoffs, I think he has a bright future. I was happy to hear that he talked to Dewey after the game.
i thought the same thing when i first saw the video, didn't look like he was trying to spit on him. weird how everyone in the comments was bashing him yesterday but is now supportive
That can happen to anyone, really, like me cycling to work and a fly flying into my mouth while I'm sport-panting (since I'm a speedy cyclist), me really spitting it out but then the spit falls on someone.
His face and actions don't show intention , not even eye contact . He's either a really good shot (and actor) , or it was truly unintentional ... which I believe the later
This is being blown entirely out of proportion. Two players talked after the game, a genuine apology was made and that should be the end of it because the players worked it out. K'Andre took immediate ownership and accountability for his actions and made it a point to go right to Dowdy to explain, offer an apology and put it to bed. If this is punished, it's just going to damage the game and send the message that players owning unintentional mistakes will be punished anyway, so why bother being accountable? It's just going to fuel players to deflect blame and that'll kill the game.
I will admit, over the years I have realized I spit a lot. I do it as politely as I possibly can but sometimes people see you do it. 😮 LOL I look at them and say: That’s why I didn’t swallow it. 🤷🏼♂️
The first time I saw the clip I thought it looked like he kinda forgot where he was and just spit the way athletes do. Unfortunately, Doughty happened to be there. I 100% believe he didn't mean to do it.
In the original video, it didn't look like Miller had intended to spit on him. Doughty was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. It absolutely, in no way shape or form, warrants a lengthy suspension. That's just ridiculous. Guys get away with deliberate violent acts every night, so it will be interesting to see what the league does about an accidental, albeit disgusting incident. One thing that's for sure is they will screw this up some how.
It doesn't matter of it was intentional or not. It is disgusting to spit in someone's face. Furthermore, spitting into a crowd is also disgusting. Sounds like an excuse to me.
I think one game is the most fair outcome. I truly doubt this was anything other than a complete accident and I think he’s a class act for wanting to immediately apologize in person after the game, but you’re still responsible for paying attention to your surroundings and being mindful of where you’re sending your own bodily fluids. Being spat on is truly disgusting and is something that to me personally is enough to evoke a ton of rage. One game to send the message to him and everyone else in the league that you have to be paying attention to these sorts of things, accident or not.
How would that work? If both players say it’s accidental and move on, it would be a PR nightmare for the league to punish one of them for it, would it not?
Why would the league get bad PR? I've seen far worse happen and get no punishment, and nothing happens. Punishing a player cause he accidentally spit would be a little odd, but it wouldn't cause the league issues I dont believe and maybe it'd be good to avoid issues where someone could do it intentionally and claim it was accidental. Like it doesn't matter if you didn't mean to bloody a guy's nose on a high sticking, thats a double minor
@@NickHockey16 No. When someone is negligent causing death, it is punished in the legal system. Not the same gravity here obviously, but the principle is the same. Learn how to spit Miller. That was gross. Control your body.
@@NickHockey16 doesnt really matter that much if both players think its intentional. I believe Miller that it was an accident, and I dont hold it against him at all, but at the end of the day he spit on someone and you just cant do that
