Al watched you rework those feeders. Like the new idea of the metal grate. An even better solution I think would have been to also make the feeder narrower at the bottom so the hay would all be accessible to the goats. As it is now the feeder will fill will hay that they can't reach. Most mangers I've seen have this angle to them. Just a thought. Enjoying your videos and look forward to seeing them every time. Keep up the good job.

I would think that if you put a angled floor in them it would bring the uneaten hay towards the front

My grandfather used to cook (boil) a lot of the garden fodder that his pigs were reluctant to eat raw (celery, potatoes, onion skin trimmings, beet greens, etc,) along with other tasty things plus a bit of feed, and once cool enough, serve it in their trough as a mash. They loved having a tasty warm stew!

You need a roof extension over the outside hay feeder so the goats will be able to come out at least that far out on a rainy day.

I’m so jealous of your weather. Where I live in North Scottsdale, we haven’t had any rain since May. The wild animals have eaten all of my plants down to nothing. Last year we had so much rain, and we actually got almost a foot of snow in the winter. This summer has been mostly watching wildfires from my porch.

I've noticed it in a couple videos now, your mixer needs some attention/maintenance. A little deconstruction and some food grade grease will quiet it down, protect it from overheating damage and extend the life of it's gears. It would make a great rainy day indoor project, and you could film it and teach everyone.

We purchased a metal one for power goats with this exact same design. Does a great job keeping them from just pulling it out randomly and it has her bottom that holds their extra goodies and extra hay. I love do-it-yourself stuff but no need to reinvent the wheel.

I think the reason that they did not waste in the old feeder was because they left their heads in it the whole time they were eating. I think the new feeders were not deep enough for them to put their whole head in and still see out the other side. Like it is too close to the wall. I hope the wire helps.

The mesh seems way too small for the goats to get their head inside to eat . The hay will not 'feed or fall' to the front of the feeders, it will need to be pulled forward manually.

I think the idea is for their mouths to get in there not their heads. It’s the same concept as a hay bag or net except it doesn’t give. Trial and error I’m sure though :)
@CassarolesDad

Is thinking that if the mesh was installed with the bottom at back of.bin and leaned forward at top at a 45 the hay would always be accessible. Just drop hay on backside of mesh and gravity would make all of it available

Al I would think about putting the wire in on a angle from front to bottom back then they can get there head in but the trough will catch most of what they pull out. I built my sheep feeders out of plywood on the ends and trough with 2/6 side rails and wire mesh angled to the middle of the trough to catch what they dropped, with a hinged roof on it because you get so much more rain I think you would be able to save a lot of hay.

Hey Al, great idea for the goat feeder, it will be interesting to see if they will be able to get to the last of the hay as it empties. If they can't you could put a board as a false bottom all the way across at a 45 to the back wall, maybe sand it a little smoother than rough sawn, that way the hay will always slide down to the front of the cage where they can reach it and hopefully eat it till it's all gone.

Your stew looks great and I know what you mean about buying beef from a reliable source. We are able to buy longhorn beef at our farmers market in addition to pork products, eggs, and chicken.
