For the first time, and im an avid fan of your channel, i would say, you ruined the poor guy's haircut. Let the proper show groomers take care of his hair. I mean, wtf seriously
He's not a show dog anymore, and his owners don't want him in a show cut. If he was to stay in a standard breed trim I never would have agreed to groom him, because I'm not trained to do so 👌. It costs nothing to be kind.
@@GirlWithTheDogs Agreed. Please dont take it negatively. It just looked bad. No malice or taunt here. Your work is beyond amazing otherwise and im a huge fan of your work.
true but the same can be said about watching Michael Jamison's tigers on youtube. tho they would still try and attack the moment you let your guard down.
There is a family with a black russian terrier named Grim living in my neighborhood. He is a fine gentleman and adores toddlers. When the neighborhood kids see him, they are all over him. If one of them loses their balance, Grim would lean and let them grub his neck to help them up. Such a good pony! 😅
@@jayltee I have a photo of my youngest daughter standing next to him, hugging his leg, because she was so tiny at 20 months and couldn't reach his neck )))
If you take the time to read more about this breed of dog and don’t make hasty conclusions solely from videos you watch on the Internet, you will quickly find out that this dog definitely cannot be called friendly, except perhaps to its owner and his family. I have been watching RBT breeders for a very long time and unfortunately very few people cope with this breed. They are overly suspicious and they literally hate strangers. Dog handlers in Russia who have experience working with RBT are categorically trying to convince people who are choosing a puppy for any purpose to abandon the idea of getting an RBT. By the way, I love this breed madly, but I cannot take responsibility for possible problems.@@jayltee
As a BRT owner this made me so happy. Personally I like the cut. Even if you hated it you can wait a few weeks and it’ll all grow back. Keep being amazing and don’t sip the hateraide.
My neighbours had one and he was also very friendly even though I too thought he was huge, but I was a child back then. In Russia we too think of terriers as small to medium dogs, but the strongest association is with the curly tough fur, so a big mixed dog would still "classify" as a terrier if it feels like one.)
BRTs are amazing dogs! I've owned one who I made sure was well-socialized as a puppy. I left him in a semi-show cut but always put his facial hair up in a topknot. He eventually became too big and strong...AMAZINGLY strong...and as I'm a bit older I worried about being pulled over while walking him and breaking a hip. I found him a new home with an experienced BRT owner and she's done amazing work with him. He's earned multiple obedience titles and just competed in the invitationals Fast CAT competition in Orlando, as he was the fastest BRT in the country in 2022! They are very serious when they say this is a breed for experienced dog owners and trainers only, and like all the Working breeds they need a job. Love you, Illya!
What an amazing, generous and selfless human being. You are an example of what happens when the best intentions merge with wisdom. Thank you for posting. You must be incredibly proud.
Oh, my, thank you for all the lovely comments! I do miss him terribly, but I know I did the best thing for him. His current mom keeps me up to date on all his activities, even as she's campaigning a younger, gorgeous male in conformation who is almost a perfect fit for the standard. I'm very proud of my boy, and I'm happiest about the fact that he's well loved! ❤️❤️❤️
I have an Airedalecross and I love her big terrier temperament. I didn't know BRTs existed before this video and now I think I've seen the best of the best of all dogs! 😄 I will stick with Airedales because of their more moderate size, though.
I am so glad this breed has finally been featured on this channel. I have a soon to be 10 year old Black Russian. Prior to having him, we had Newfoundlands. My (now) late husband wanted a "lower maintenance" dog than a Newfoundland. Low maintenance isn't something to expect. Socialisation is a life-long training session. They are VERY distrusting of strangers (as am I), and being so fluffy and adorable people, especially children, will disregard my demands to stay way from him and touch him. He always growls at them. Because I have put in the work with life long socialisation and training, he has never bitten anyone besides someone who attempted to invade our home, whereas he did his job protecting his property and family by tearing out the backs of that guy's knees before the guy fired his gun at any of us. The "fau" that runs down his face came in handy that day because the home invader could not see my dog with his flashlight. The fau covering his face keeps the light from reflecting from their eyes and becoming easy targets at night. Like every dog with a specific haircut, it has a purpose. I will never be without a Russian Terrier. Yeah, he is ALOT of grooming, and his professional grooming are $250. This breed, more than any I have had, is truly all purpose. He is a guardian, a goofball, a cuddler, a tremendous farm dog that herds everything from cattle to chickens, to even myself when it's dinner time. Great dogs, and they definitely require a truly exceptional owner/handler/family.
I think he senses your distrust of some people. Not a criticism - I say that as a BRT owner as well. I let my dog approach anyone he wants, and apologize for him being so friendly if I need to. If I hold him back he seems to think maybe he needs to be on guard. Just a thought, and really not a criticism. Oh, and yes - they disappear in the dark. Definitely handy for a guard dog. Glad you guys are ok.
When I worked in a veterinary clinic, one such guy came in with sore ears. He had a wonderful character, but during the treatment of his ears the doctor ordered him to “lie down” and we, two assistants, sat on his back :) because this was the only way to persuade him to endure the procedure. And then there was a touching moment when the doctor allowed him to go to the door and he saw the owners standing outside. And this giant adult dog stomped his hind legs like a child because he couldn’t wait to get back to his owners!
I can’t help but think that Black Russian Terriers would be a good working dog in Canada (where this channel is from), given how similar Russia’s climate is to Canada’s (I was thinking about running this through google translate, but I don’t trust it to translate my comment properly)
@@niall_sanderson Good day. Russian Black terrier is from Russia, from the military dog’s kennel in Moscow area. It is named ,,Red star’’. Russian black terrier is a companion dog, very friendly, smart and nice. Good for family with children. Nice to the other pets. For Canada and Canadian climate this breed should be good, but again, it’s a family dog. Google translate works very well for me, but I know both languages and can correct translation, just in case.
I've had 3 in my lifetime. I can't say enough good things about this breed. They need their exercise but honestly some of the calmest, gentlest dogs. Would absolutely recommend to anyone :)
I had a BRT for 14 years back home in Ukraine. What a great dog he was! The chillest, nicest friend that loved people and had a sense of humor, but could stand his ground. It took me taking him to a junior protection training class to actually see if he was able to bite. Turned out he had the instincts all right, but he just hated biting. Not a mean bone in him. Also, luckily our Ram was the one puppy in his litter that did not have the modern "show" coat, his hair was rougher and shorter all over, so grooming was so much easier. It's been 5 years now miss him to this day.
It's so simple... When I see Vanessa post a video, the first thing I do is to hit the like button. Then I watch the video and learn something new about a breed I have never seen before.
I've met a few of these ponies--one of whom had an adorable topknot with a pink ribbon--and they were all wonderfully behaved. I particularly like that I barely had to bend down to hug them.
I am still heartbroken learning yesterday about Kuma´s passing. Lets hug our pets, show them our love and give them a delish christmas dish for a treat. / Merry Christmas from Stockholm, Sweden
@lllusionQueen4Evshow dogs have standards rules that owners have to a hereby if they fail to go by those rules their dog will banned from show them again.
@daniellewoolley8607 That's understandable...However, imagine making that argument with regards to "Big Lick" competitions with horses...they suffer horribly to win show competitions. Show competitions are not really impressive honestly.
Honestly as someone who has a black russian i dont even do that cut i just shave her down. She is not a show dog. She is a family dog and also runs super warm all the time despite having our home at a constant 65°. She also has a Rottweiler brother, and they love to hike and play rough, so shorter hair just works for us. She is the best!
My "aunt" (wasn't really one but I always called her that) had this breed when I was a kid. Was a female tho, called Lalli. She was very sweet and playful for what I can remember.
There's something lovely and calming about Vanessa and this channel. The genuine love she feels for our furry friends shines through. It's clear that the vast majority of animals also pick up on this from the way they respond to her. What a lovely person. ❤
The dog I've had was totally like a twin of Monty, but two times smaller! I'm from Russia, so, I really think he could have been a mix of this breed. His name was Barnie, and he was adorable. We didn't have amy groomers in small town way back then, so we shaved and trimmed him on a kitchen table: dad was holding him still, mom was doing all the work. Good times
Bring in more BRTs! They are magnificent and yes hard work to groom. I have 2 of these blackies at home and grooming both of them takes me about 12 hours. It’s an act of love and muscles.
Monte is gorgeous 🥰! He is the best well behaved boi. He was just panting away with nerves but didn't flinch, pull away or complain. What a stunner. 😊🤗
Breeders that include the temperament of their dogs are good breeders. With our dogs becoming more and more an extension of our families, their temperament around strangers and other dogs is vital. I pray more breeders include it in their breed goals.
I would love a Bouve one day, but they have a lot of health problems sadly, so I was told look into one of these since they can be very similar in look and in temperament. he looks pretty good, yeah not exactly a show cut but he isnt a show dog anymore, he can look how ever the owner wants, and this is easier to take care of
Good gawd, look at the bone on him! Those legs! What a beautifully-bred dog. I mean, they bred them for a purpose, but he looks healthy and well-proportioned, even as a former show dog adhering to a breed standard. Bravo, Monty. Thanks for introducing us to a Russian Terrier. Buon Natale to you and yours!
Oh wow! Seeing this makes me both sad and happy. We used to have black russian terrier. I said used to bc unfortunately someone poisoned him and his kidneys failed. We had to make the best decision we could for him. I will never forget how gentle, intelligent and amazing he was. We have few miniature ponies in the neighbourhood and he loved looking at them. He was also amazing at sensing your emotions. Once I was out late and when I came back he gently (as much this beast could) patted me. I remember sitting on ground with him laying on my legs and looking at the moon. He made this night so much better. It truly is my core memory
Vanessa. You may not be happy with how he turned out but that attitude is exactly why you are good at what you do and you will improve in the future. Keep up the great work and have a Merry Christmas.
need to go to a dog show to understand what is acceptable. What you think is mean it really not. It's a standard for different types of dogs. You don't know anything about show dog standards. The dogs you see at show are not mixed dogs they purebred
@daniellewoolley8607 ... Oh stop with the elitist "show standards" talk. It's just human stupidity, cutting dog's hair to obstruct their vision to the point that they trip, as Vanessa said. It's human vanity, nothing more. Same with cutting dog's ears or tails just for a certain "look" that humans want for their own VANITY. I cannot take you seriously with your demand that "show standards" regarding esthetic features that literally injure dogs or negatively impact their ability to function are in any way legitimate.
Monty is very laid back for such a huge dog ,his legs are like miniature trees. You looked even tinier next to him. Have a Merry Christmas Vanessa.♥️🐾✂️🎄
He is from slow growing line in a breed, they will be massive at 5 years old and he is only 2 years . Massive males grow slower as they need time wot fill up . He is our son , my male (father of Monty) became massive at 4.5 year old and he has excellent medical test - excellent hips. At his age he is very active and powerful (he is almost 8 now) he can run and jump better than young ones just because he was growing slow step by step and absorbed nutrients accordingly ❤️
I miss my Black Russian terrier, they are not for a first time dog owner, but are such great dogs. Thanks for putting this video up. yes there are several ways to groom them there’s a whole book on the various styles since they’re a newer breed not so many groomers come across them. We used to tie the hair in front with a hair band.
Oh, how happy I am to see Чёрного Русккого Терьера (ЧРТ) aka. Stalin's dog. They're a very nice guard breed, not a lot of inbreeding in lines, and a good temperament too!
The breed was developed in second part of 20th centuary thus it's imposibe to be bread for Stalin. You'll be surpriced but not everithing developed in Russia was developed for and thanks to Stalin)))
Vanessa- you are truly amazing! I never heard of or have seen this breed! Thank you for always teaching as you groom! Merry Christmas to you and your family!!!🎄🎄🎄🎄
