I bought a Doom mod on 3.5 floppy disk back in the early 90's at a HAM and computer swap meet. It was chain shotgun. It made your double barrel shoot like a minigun. It was devastating.

not so strange as games has never really changed after this, being exactly like mods with just a better graphic (well better in terms of resolution, because they will never achieve these levels, think to the hardware that there were than, now with all this memory, graphic, tools etc. they are not able to do a PLAYABLE game, maybe that is the problem, at the time they had to use all their imagination and skills to go beyond the limitation of the hardware, now they don't have limit in terms of hardware, they put million into making games, but they are just driven by selling stuff, they are not driving by making the history making something never tried before)

GZDoom and other modern sourceports of the OG Doom have become a real Ship of Theseus situation and the reason why GZDoom is considered bloated is because it still has legacy compatibility. VkDoom a fork of GZDoom strips that legacy code away, going with a pure Vulkan backend. I hope they can get CPU multi-threadingto work and have it run as a 64bit app as well

thank you for this video! I've never played it, but it seems like you did a great job covering it. You mentioned that it took a long time to make, and as I recall, I think i saw a handful of blog posts over the years about this upcoming mod which has since been released. I have to say though that the mod sure does look scary!

This isn't a doom mod, but something made in an engine that was originally conceived to run doom in modern systems but itself was developed so much that it became its own thing. GZdoom isn't "Doom"

But... there's an mod mod to allow you to play this in regular doom maps, its buggy, and you'll have to idclev to unbreak it. but it IS PLAYABLE in regular doom maps, i don't understand people who say 'gzdoom isn't doom'. Is Stalker Anomaly not Stalker? Both are different from the base but the soul is still the same.

@@Eggmaestro2004 well when you think about it, GZDOOM was made and started THROUGH doom's source port, then it started to evolve from ABDoom (i think thats it what's called, not so sure tho) then to Zdoom i think into GZdoom or something like that, so i think that saying that GZdoom is not doom is wierd

To be more accurate, this is a GZDoom game. GZDoom is a source port made for Doom2 with the IDtech engine but more more more upgraded and with a lot of features ( true 3D, Scripts, advanced mapping format ... ). The mod is a stalker like, very impressive and for free ( the Doom2 IWAD is not mandatory to play this one )

This needs to stop. People keep calling these games "mods for DOOM II", or saying they "run on the DOOM II engine" (id Tech 1). They're not, and they don't. This is almost certainly a GZDoom game. I love ZDoom; I use GZDoom for single player and Zandronum for multiplayer, but the only relationship they have to id Tech 1 is that it will run the original IWADs, and you can make them do so in a way that is "vanilla-ish" if you want to. That said there are more vanilla-ish source ports like the Boom family and the Chocolate Doom family, but having watch 17 seconds of this video, I can assure you that this game almost certainly does not run on those engines. (I downloaded it, it comes with a portable copy of GZDoom) These modern sourceports have incredibly long pedigrees, and are the result of a staggering number of man hours by their development teams. Calling games like this "mods for DOOM II" or implying that they run on id Tech 1 kind of obscures the amount of effort that has gone into expanding the capabilities of these engines and the contributions of their developers. Not to undersell the work that has gone into the vanilla-ish engines as well, but if they were compatible with those you'd at least be acknowledging their success in providing a vanilla-ish experience. doomwiki.org/wiki/Source_port doomwiki.org/wiki/Id_Tech_1

IIRC this is built on GZDoom, a source port of the Doom engine with increased limits/capable of things the original Doom engine wasn't so it's technically a mod of a mod of the Doom engine, still impressive though, particularly for one person.

How is this a Doom mod? By that I mean, what part of Doom is actually still present? If you start with a Volkswagon Beetle, and you replace the body, the frame, the motor, the interior, and the wheels, is it still a Volkswagon Beetle?

Well, isn't it just a new game running on GZDoom engine? The other one is Selaco. BTW, as I finished Selaco Chapter 1, it's time for THIS. As I wouldn't call Selaco a Doom mod, neither this looks like a mod. This looks like a new game.

Doom 2 isn't an engine. It's runs on ID Tech 1. Gzdoom is a source port.

what is with kids these days and skipping the story?! It's the most important part. If you skip the story I know you just looked at the pictures in comic books/ manga and didn't actually read it.
