I think the Marina needs soome sort of break water around it. I know its a river and so you dont exect much wave action but the breakwater also helps with wakes from other vessels passing by
@narvalin5905

The marinas in my city are on the convergence of 2 rivers, yet none of them have break waters. I think speed limits control the wake.
@erossing8212
@erossing8212 6 часов назад
The marina in the corner between the boat maintenance and the observation tower seem sheltered enough, depending on the speed of the river, to allow for small boats. Where I live the city lies on a river bend, where the river usually flows rapidly when passing the bend. Smaller boats would defenitely need a sheltered space. Docking right on the observation tower would then be limited to larger boats (think river cruise boats, like you see on the Rhine). You could make it look more realistic by spacing out the piers there to contrast with the little sheltered marina on the side and lifting them up as the bigger boats would board higher above the waterline.
@3badgersinatrenchcoat
@3badgersinatrenchcoat 5 часов назад
@@erossing8212 not sure many boats are getting under those bridges? The clearance looks pretty low in places. Can be hard to tell when zoomed out though, but I'm struggling to imagine anything larger than small powered boats getting to that marina, certainly nothing with a mast (unless they can drop it). If the river flow is strong, they might have some kind of breakwater to make manoeuvring easier within the marina. Or perhaps just an outer pontoon wrapping around the outside, which is what a lot of marinas near me do

1. I really think we need to up the education pipeline. Not nearly enough elementary schools; also can bump up all the way through a medical school given the regional hospital! Think Madison, WI 2. The downtown bend area would thrive with more mixed use and more urban education. 3. The downtown bend area really needs more parking. I think adding an underground deck in the shoreline park (think Millennium Park in Chicago) would be a great solution-these surface level parking lots aren’t cutting it and are resulting in a ton of traffic [or maybe public transit needs beefing up]

Just a weird bit of info for all of those builders that haven't researched the rules on paths and roads. (Seeing Phil put in all the paths reminded me.) The maximum path slope allowed is about 8% (1:12) - this is for wheelchair accessibility - paths through forests need not follow this rule. For Cities Skylines, each unit (square) is supposed to be 8 metres, and each elevation line is 1 metre. So to make your pedestrian path slopes legal, you can go down 2 elevation lines for every 3 units (squares) forward. For roads, most areas limit you to 12% - 15% (1:8 to 1:6ish). So you can go up/down one elevation line for each unit (square) of road and still be acceptably safe. Where I come from (Canada), collector roads are limited to 8% (1:12 - same as wheelchair rules above), and local roads are limited to 10% (1:10 - somewhere between 1 unit forward for each elevation line and 3 units forward for every 2 elevation lines) without getting special permission. BTW - The graphics for vertical in CS is way off. The land/terrain graphics are about 2 or 3x what they would actually look like IRL. Some buildings are really badly off too - there are buildings that are supposed to be 3 storeys that are the same height in game as buildings with 5 storeys.
@Keikdv
@Keikdv День назад
A comment to my heart! Most builders don't care because the game does not stop them from building stupid ramps or slopes. It should be a switch: build realistic or not?
@sol_in.victus
@sol_in.victus 23 часа назад
To be fair not saying its the case, cause there's definitely some strange vertical scale issues with the assets, but you could totally have older buildings with either really tall or really shallow ceilings that have very different storey/height ratios.
@OrganMuncher
@OrganMuncher 23 часа назад
Having a bit of trouble making sense of the numbers - the 8% mentioned means 8% of a piece of road's distance, right? For example, if I were building a 10-meter path, the slope over the entirety of that road would not exceed 80 cm, right? So in-game, a path taking 5 squares (which should be 40 meters, right?) would slope harsher than 4 meters, which would be 4 elevation lines, right?
@jameswiebe8956
@jameswiebe8956 23 часа назад
@@OrganMuncher The percentage is tough to see in your head, that's why I put the ratios as well. 8% is a 1 to 12 ratio. So for one level of elevation the path should go forward 12 meters, or 1 1/2 squares. So for going up 4 levels, you want the path to go forward (4x1.5 =) 6 squares.

I like the waterfront concept but don't think the marina configuration would work in practice. I'm a little concerned about the strength of the river's flow and how that will impact vessels tied to the docks or on floating docks so constructing some kind of longer outer dock that serves as a buffer for the inner marina would serve a double purpose of creating an artificial calm area for the boats while also creating longer mooring locations for larger vessels. I'm also curious about the height of the bridges between the marina and the lake and what the necessary height cap would be on vessels at that marina. I'm guessing no sailing vessels would be able to use it, so it would be mostly motorized pleasure craft. I could also see the orientation of the marina taking a different geometry to maximize available slips and space for moorings.
@Vyrus_101
@Vyrus_101 День назад
I had the same thoughts, there would need to be a break wall st least I’d think unless it’s a super calm bit of river? I’m no marina expert though… also I noticed the space between the slips seems too small, I know Phil was just trying to achieve a look though and he got it.
@Keikdv
@Keikdv День назад
and how about the space to manouver and getting in/out of the boats with all those raillings 21:54 ! Even with the mast down, a sailing vessel could not pass most bridges. And pleasure boats are not that low too, if you do not mean rowing boats.

Classic city planner. Some areas have square miles of parking. The downtown area on the other hand, which is the planner's pet project in any city, never has parking even for the people who live there. Aside from not liking (postmodern) cities to begin with, I cannot fathom why someone would live somewhere so crowded, where you can't have the decency of a place to put your car, and lack greenspace. I make a point in my cities to try and keep up with parking in a balanced manner. Last night, I realized I had inadvertently made a whole medium density neighborhood with major attractions and only on-street parking. I narrowed up the roads and put the parking in consolidated garages behind buildings where possible.

Love the new coastline. I have two suggestions: first, for the marina next to the tower, you should add one more marina the size of the others, coming out of the corner at 45°, that empty corner looks like wasted space for marina rental. Second, for one of those streets that you were originally going to put your bridge across, if you add "Ferry" to the street name (I can't recall its name, but if it's Sunshine Street now, call it Sunshine Ferry?) you give history and story to the apparent old ferry crossing, which wasn't used for bridge placement. This was a great episode, Phil, it looks beautiful. If it were me, I'd pick Autumn to plant trees, so you know what fall colors you get, but I suppose if you know your varieties that's not necessary.

Flexing Bend! Finally Bend is getting some love. Some naming suggestions: 1.Not much of a naming suggestion but I suggest keeping the name Fruitvale and just annexing the whole township to Bend (for Sunrise Dale) 2. For Mulberry Dale, since you did take it off from the Township of Milan, we can call it "Lombard Lakeshore" or "Riva Lombarda" 3. For Chestnut Croft, we can keep it simple as "Milan Triangle". This way even if we further urbanize and the township does get fully absorbed by the city, the name remains. Edit: also, not the biggest fan of the parts of the marina too close to the bridge. I wonder how much it would change the river flow. The smaller marina tucked in near the blue roofed housing looks a bit better and more sheltered.

Two ideas for Mulberry Dale as a name 1. Eden Shores - Named in parody of Paradise Bay because Bend has some people in charge who aren't above some more petty antics. 2. Como - Another commenter suggested a name based on Milan being named after the Italian city, Como is a lake just to the north of Milan and makes the area feel like a lot of the naming was taken from that specific region of Italy.

@33:00 maybe a parking garage for the new tower? In fact, maybe place it in the middle to be used by that entire development block (where the ped path is going through, between Main and Belmont by the marina facility buildings)

Another thing I like to do for waterfronts is to build some wharves and then put high density office, mixed use, commercial, leisure, and parks on them, as if it was a redevelopment of a former run-down industrial waterfront. This makes more sense the more navigable the body of water or waterway is, but even a relatively small city like Bend might have had some barge traffic in the past or something.

Hey Phil! The redevelopment of Downtown Bend made me think of something that I would love to see in the city: a major pedestrian street! I went to college in Burlington, VT and one of the best places in the city is Church Street, a pedestrian only street lined by small businesses and restaurants. In the warmer months, people were out busking and we had a farmers market in the park off Church Street, and it was just always the place to be even if you just wanted to take a walk between classes. I would love to see Bend attempt to maintain some of that smaller town charm while still embracing higher densities and I feel like a commercial pedestrian street would be a great compromise! (and if the Williams are still salty about all of the redevelopment, at least they'd have a new marketplace to sell their produce and spread their message!)

On the topic of seasons, I think it could be interesting if each video depending on how much is being done kind of moves forward a season. So some episodes may not get much of city landscaping due to it being winter, and others getting more due to it being spring and summer.

For neighborhood names: I'd say that sunrise dale could be changed to like Milan banks or something to that affect to pay homage to the old township. Chestnut croft could be changed to Williams View or Williamson, in reference to the farm across the street, the name is hotly debated whether it's a jab at/a compliment to the notorious farmers across the street, but publicly the planners say that it is meant to honor the Williams family and their connection to the land. I think it fits well with the slightly passive aggressive names like Governors Hill and stuff. For Mulberry dale it could be called Inferior it's funny it fits with the lake, why not? haha

Bend is definitely my favourite out of all of the areas in Magnolia County. Definitely deserves more love and this build did that. Maybe an interesting build for somewhere in magnolia county in the future could be a build centered around sports, a lucrative business which could bring in a ton of investment to wherever it goes. And considering magnolia county is in America I'd say American Football would probably be a priority there.

I think it would be really cool to have a boat ramp added next to the repair place. Also, if you want to lean into the maritime stuff more, many towns along the shore of Superior have their own maritime museum, I think it would be really cool to have something like that added along the waterfront, if you could find the asset for it.

I like where you place the bridge. That was a good alternative to where you previously planned to place it. I noticed all the paths along the water go under the bridges but don't have direct acces to the bridges. The pedestrians would have to turn yards ahead, sometimes half a block just to get on to it. Adding a small path closer to the bridge intersection would be realistic. As for the trees, I think the manicured look is nice, but I do prefer a much fuller foliage. But give your hands a rest. I heard yoga for knitters and crocheters does wonders for all types if folks who do repetitive hand work. Try that and see if you benefit.

The waterfront near the marina would have been a *brilliant* place for some medium-high density mixed-use zoning. It would have been great for both providing great views for residents on higher floors, while also providing cafes & convenience stores for people walking along the riverfront from the viewing tower or coming off their boats.

As far as the 3 new neighborhoods I'd suggest that Sunrise Dale become River's Edge(River can be replaced with the name of the River if it has one), Mulberry Dale become something like North Inferior(or East or whichever direction from the lake it is) And Chestnut Croft be named after the road from the bridge that is cutting under the highway and runs the length of the neighborhood. I'd also like to suggest that in the open space at the one end of the shoreline that got the rocks a new small dog park would give that space meaning beyond the shoreline pathways.

Not to harp on the same thing over and over, but I really think bridges over the river need to be much higher. A river like this (thinking like the Ohio) could see signficant trade upstreem of the map. Regardless, It doesn't even look like small boats could get through. Looks more like a bridge over a small creek. Otherwise, amazing video as always!

A great name for Sunrise Dale would be Riverbend Shores. The story is after Bend county officials explained their plan to redevelop low density residential into high density buildings, the families were upset. They did not want to live in a high rise however, they wanted the ability to live close to the river. Bend officials came up with a plan to move the families on the other side of the river. Also, to make sure they still feel like a part of the city they gave it a familiar name. Riverbend Shores

Love the riverside! Absolutely one of your best. Might include a few gazebos and benches, but that's getting nitty gritty so it's alright. For the awkward parcel where you put the two identical mixed use buildings. Maybe try to plop another, smaller buildin in the wider end of the block to get a more enveloped feeling, instead of the flat bare concrete wall

Finally some high rises! What an amazing build this one! Great episode. Just one thing: up unitl 49:10 I was shouting at my monitor with great vengeance and furious anger anytime the observation tower came into sight. There was always a bush in the middle of the driveway you custom build. Could you maybe make little fixes like this when something is obviously blocking a road instantly? That really gets me going for some reason. Thank you so much in advance! Love your channel mate!

I think it would be nice to have a harbourmaster's house and offices near the marina warehouses, somewhere small where paperwork can be done, seamanship training courses can be held and sailors can go to get showers. in my experience of marinas here in the UK that kind of amenity is important, and I think a little complex of those buildings could be very cute.

Naming suggestion for "Sunrise Dale" "Outer Bend" (because it's on the outside of the bend) Some of the Other Suburbs: "Williams' Bane" Also, are you going to consider a subway for Bend? All this density, heaps more cars and car parks at a massive cost to tax payers. If you had a subway or Metro going under the river you'd reduce your car dependency. That would also one up the light rail in Paradise bay. Nothing quite like cross town rivalry :P But Also, there's probably only 20k to 30k people in Bend. I think if you increase density on both sides of the river and further up the river, you'd be justified in a subway. Maybe that's an MC44 episode when the density is higher. It would also need to interchange with the train line. Great series! Thank you!

I love this series, nice new water front and downtown and an iconic landmark :) Thoughts: The diagonal parking on the road leading to the bridge seems very unsafe, especially as that road is going to be an arterial with the new development. The Williams are gonna be furious, especially as it's actually a prime location for the highway intersection to easily get into Bend. I also suggest a path between the hospital park and the offices for employee breaks. :)

One of the things that exists in a lot of major cities in the US is a few consulate buildings! I've noticed they tend to be in older style buildings in my city. Maybe you could rename that series of residential buildings off of Riverbend Boulevard with the large parcel to reflect three foreign consulates with connections to the region. And who knows, maybe in the future a few of those countries could sponsor some sort of business development in the area. :)

Always liked the name Pennycroft. I like to landscape and see what things will look like in the spring and autumn. I actually like seeing the passage of time during construction. I actually do like the rock wall and paths, but prefer the more natural tree scape along the river. Maybe you could do a mix of the two, we do that a lot on the PNW.

On one fine summer morning, the residents on Cooper Street in Bend were awoken to the sound of Public Works improving and manicuring the riverbank with new paths, trees, and (tons and tons) of rocks. As the days turned into weeks, the Cooper Street residents noticed the changes in their backyards reflected a much larger and well-organized beautification project that extended along the entirety of Bend's shoreline. Many of their friends and neighbors who lived on Belmont Street, some of whom had lived in Bend since its founding, cashed out and sold their property only for the city planners to raze their homes and replace them with newer towers and brownstones. Those same city planners are seen frequently at the new marina and observation tower, staring longingly at the land surrounding Cooper Street, perhaps fantasizing about its future grandness. The Mayor's office scoffed at the residents' concerns but promised an open door in the future should they need it. The hollow promises of a politician. The city planners, recluses by nature, seemed preoccupied with seemingly innocuous and harmless phrases like 'floor area ratio' and 'density bonuses' before retreating to the dark crevices of their paper strewn offices. The writing may be on the wall for the residents of Cooper Street. The future spares no one in its advances.

Great episode! I really think you should add something to the back of the warehouses on the water, they look strange without some context. Maybe add some more docking to simulate fish boat loading, or maybe a kayak dock if there's any available assets. Also, for repetetive tasks such as placing all the rocks, why not make a small section and copy+paste? Might not come out as nice but it's worth your time and fingers.
