Awesome video! What kind of wood would you recommend using for closet shelves for the beginning woodworker? Wood should be nice looking with a clear top coat and economical.

The curve is not really necessary, just so you know, as long as your caul material is hard enough. Also: Get yourself some angle iron. It's easier to clamp, easier to store, and stronger, and you'll be much happier in the long run. :)

I just found your channel. I didn't do woodworking - yet - but I hope to start in the next few years. I did work on a project when I was young, thin, and beautiful with a friend whose dad was a carpenter. It got me hooked, but I haven't had the opportunity to do more. Now that the kids are grown, I have to time to start again. All of that is to say that I'm subscribing. I really like your attention to detail, the tips and tricks, and the practicality of the pieces you make. I also love seeing how your shop and house is full of other pieces that you've made. It doesn't seem that you ever stain them or protect them with oils, etc. Is that accurate?

Thank you so much for watching! I do not usually use stain on my projects but I always protect them with multiple coats of oil or some other type of finish.

@@ThomasCustomWoodworks ok. And have you heard or looked into the new trend of using the ancient method of burning wood to make it waterproof and more durable? If so, thoughts?

Cauls don't need a lot of curve in them. Even 1/16" is usually enough. I think on your first attempt, you were making the curve too extreme.
