John and Anne are splitting up, and want to sell their 100-year-old, four-bedroom, semi-detached Edwardian home in Finchley, North London…But even after dropping the price £65,000, they’ve had just eight viewings in four months, and not a single offer. The couple is perplexed - especially since the grand home features a large garden, extraordinary period details, and a prime park location… However, their Bohemian hangout also features reams of clutter and unfinished DIY jobs, peeling wallpaper, way too many office spaces, and a dated kitchen whose groovy days are long gone.
Enter property experts John Rennie and Sofie Allsopp. They promise to transform the home from seller’s nightmare to buyer’s dream. And while John has a serious chat with the agent and vies for a national marketing campaign, Sofie breathes new life into the kitchen, bedrooms, and living spaces, and reveals the home’s historic charm. Will their plan pay off with a sale?

Doing any work to that masonry bearing wall would be expensive, messy, and time consuming. First, planning permission would be needed because it affects the structure. My house was sold within a week, while my neighbors house, exactly the same, had been on the market for over 6 months and they only got lowball offers and couldn't understand why. When they asked, I bluntly told them the truth. That it was a dirty mess with clutter all over the place and nobody likes that. They had trouble believing me. They even had plates with half eaten food on the couch and on the floor! Yeah well she said, you know the cat didn't eat it all so I just left it!! We then offered to help them out and spend a weekend on their house, cleaning, painting and getting them to pack boxes with stuff and have them hire a storage unit. They had new pictures taken by their real estate agent and low and behold the house sold in two or three weeks for their original asking price! I just couldn't believe how they could not see that their house was a complete dump. Even if you had vision it was almost impossible to see the potential. Maybe this couple also just don't realize that their mess puts people off. They are so used to it and maybe attached to the (for them nice) atmosphere so for them it's really no issue.

If you're leaving, why keep all your stuff laying around? How can a place like this even be cleaned properly? Of course the make-over was a vast improvement. This is London, and an historic and large house. If I had the money, I would snap up that house right away, at a discount price compared to similar properties in London. These properties aren't a dime a dozen. Once sold, the couple will of course move out and take all their furniture and belongings with them. Then I'd have an empty Edwardian house which could easily be repainted and wallpapered, with a bit of remodelling in the kitchen etc. A bit of a makeover of the garden etc. and you'll have a great property that will increase in value and could later be sold at a profit.

Well, remember - they aren't doing this work out of charity. They are limited by the budget of the sellers, and obviously these sellers aren't willing to spend a penny to fix the house up the way it needs to be. At the point when this was filmed (in like 2008), the market for real estate had crashed around the world and we were in a worldwide Recession as a result of the financial fall-out crisis that spread from the US to Canada, the UK and elsewhere in Europe. They sold the house for a bargain price and I'm sure as soon as the market started to pick back up again the new buyers were able to take out a rehabilitation loan and get the place further fixed up. The main thing that Sophie and crew do is get the place at least presentable, even if they're putting bandaids on a lot of injuries; at wounds have been cleaned and dressed for later treatment!

@@clemdane I'm am guessing that there is a good reason the door from dining room to kitchen is as it is. Most likely it was originally a hatch for passing dishes between the rooms. People moving from the one to the other would have to go through the corridor. That is a bearing wall, so the kept the original height and width of the hatch, simply removing the wall beneath the opening. Changing the height of the door would involve some fairly major structural work, as most often in England bearing walls are solid masonry. I would reinstate the hatch, creating more wall space for much needed work surface. I'm betting that someone will spend the money to open up that wall using a steel, creating an open plan (UGH) kitchen/diner that flows through into the sitting room.
@michaeltutty1540
@michaeltutty1540 3 года назад
This house has simply gorgeous bones. To bring it back from the state it was in after the work would not be difficult. That door from the dining room to the kitchen was more than likely a serving hatch, with wall beneath it. That is a solid masonry bearing wall, so raising the lintel would be time consuming and expensive. I would turn it back into a hatch and free up wall space for more work surface and a more logical layout as part of the kitchen remodel. For decorating, I would hit the Britannia wallpaper books. They have, or had, reprinted papers from the 20s and 30s in a scrubbable solid vinyl wallpaper that is dry strippable. Incredibly easy to hang, and incredibly durable. My folks used a few of their papers back in the 70s, and 40 years on they still looked as fresh as the day they were hung. There was no discolouration or faded patches under the pictures, either, so the colours had remained true.

Well, it's still a mess. A better, tidier mess, but while I can see past such things, and to bones of a house, not everyone can, or wants to do the work. In addition to the very sad kitchen, there is the dirty, dinged woodwork and walls, nails sticking out of plaster, filthy walls in the son's "new" room (and check the wall around the light switches at 26:15 - along with the line of dirt below it). We don't know anything about the state of the bathrooms or of the back garden, and the front garden's a mess. Whoever buys this house has a great deal of work ahead of them. I've worked with such things, but the potential must be worth whatever problems an inspection uncovers and the cost of upgrades and repairs. No one wants to buy a "potentially" beautiful money pit.

Just tell most people - in the 6 months before selling, start a major de-cluttering. After getting rid of unncessary stuff (keeping photos of them if you wish), rent a storage unit - taking out 1/3 of furniture and items. Some of the items in this house would make ideal garden decorations. Buy new couches if necessary or stage one or two rooms of the house. At least this time - all signs of children did not have to be taken out - even if the son was older - he was able to keep some of his possessions. And work away at fixing all the small areas ....that don't necessarily take a lot of money, just takes attention to do them.

Weak or useless excuses abound, from their friend never came to haul away X to they haven't finalized their new location yet. I'm guessing that was originally a hatch in the masonry bearing wall. Raising the height would be a major job of work, involving planning consent and structural engineering expertise. Originally anyone going from dining room to kitchen would go by way of the hall. I would reinstate the hatch, giving more wall space for much needed work surface as part of a total gut rehab of the kitchen. Keep in mind that back in Edwardian times, a middle class family who could afford a home like that would have had a cook/housekeeper, so direct access from dining room to kitchen would not have been a priority when the house was built.

I don't understand why the owners didn't just put all their things in storage, paint it and stay in an Air BNB while it's getting sold. I wonder if the clutter didn't contribute to the breakdown of the marriage. Maybe if they had decorated it in a cheerful way and got marriage counseling, they wouldn't be selling right now. Unfortunately, men often don't see the need to improve the home, yet the clutter and darkness depresses them, too.
