Thanks so much for watching everyone! I don't like being negative, but clearly this one got to me, only because of how amazing the rest of the book and series are.
Great review Benjamin! It’s been awhile since I’ve read this one but I remember having similar thoughts. The first 3/4 of the book are near perfect and the ending is frustrating but still enjoyable overall
Yeah, I think my disappointment in the ending is compounded by just how good the rest of the book and series have been, just such a low point at the end of such highs.
Great review. All of your critiques are justified. I still enjoyed it so much personally. Golden Son was definitely the tightest of the trilogy. But then again, I wouldn’t have wanted golden son 2.0.
I think if the rest of the series wasn't so good, I would of been kinder on this ending, I think it feels worse than it actually is, just because of how high everything before it was, big drop off at that point.
The part you mentioned about how Darrow as the POV character is acting like he doesn't know what the plan is even though he's in on it, that bothered me the most, to me it felt like a very flawed and lazy way for the author to pull a twist on the audience
I wasn't as concerned with it at the time, but now with a bit of distance from when I read it, I have more problems with that aspect. It definitely wasn't very clean.
I agree 100% - the reveals/twists are so awkward because we get to know Darrow's thoughts, feelings, plans and all that ALMOST all the time.... until it's convenient for us not to. I still enjoyed the trilogy, but this is my biggest problem with it.
I think the nonstop action and excitement actually hindered my enjoyment for this book (and the series as a whole). It's cool and all, but when we're constantly in battles it becomes dull and I lose interest. Mentioned it before and in a comment below, but the whole first person POV with the reveals/twists just really didn't work for me. Aside from that, though, I enjoyed the trilogy. High-adrenaline space opera with some neat world-building and fun characters. Think I'd give it an overall rating of 7/10. Definitely glad I read it, but not one of my absolute favorites.
I think that's fair, something about the pacing in this series just worked for me, where as usually I think I'd agree that books do need a bit of slow down every now and then to contrast with the high intensity sections, something about this series just did it right for me, hard to explain why. I'm going to continue with book 4 soon, have you checked it out?
